They are solid number 4 and 5 guys and have done pretty much what I expected from 4 and 5 guys. I agree with lane on Hurd, not exactly sure but I believe with more game experience he will get at least Patric Crayton better. Hoss you have my permission to make them run laps tomorrow. Or run the steps at Texas Stadium. Whichever you prefer.

I think with more playing time, Hurd will be better than Crayton. Hurd is faster, but like Hos said, he needs to learn to run routes better. I like Austin returning kicks. Why we keep Patrick returning punts, I do not understand. I would have Austin do both. Just have to teach Miles how to juke the kicker....:laugh2:

Yeah, I don't understand how Austin can look so fast that the initial gunners and kick coverage guys look like their standing still, and then constantly makes the kicker looks like a Pro Bowl Linebacker in terms of tackling ability?!

Austin needs to cut those runs where only 1 or 2 guys are left BACK TO THE INSIDE, then run the bugger over if he can't juke him. Don't get squeezed to the sideline.

Austin seems to have good instincts finding the hole on those returns though. He's pretty consistent getting us one or two a game to around the 40. With our offense, that is very helpful.

Austin needs to get the ball more...

I would like to see Austin go deep ALOT more during the games.... he can fly and he can draw PI flags for sure. Take a DB and a Safety away from LOS.

Hurd doesn't excite me at all. He's been given a chance all season and made very little of it. He's not really going to get much better either, I don't think. Austin has some upside and looks quite a bit better than he did in preseason. If nothing else, he should be the kick returner/4th receiver for a long time.
You never know. You gotta remember, Hurd is still ONLY 22.

I think both of these guys are just in their 2nd years no?

They seem to catch the ball. Hurd seems to be agile and quick. Austin fast and pretty big. They haven't been dropping the balls sent there way which has been key for a number of first down conversions.

I think that at the least they are solid number 4 and 5 guys on the roster. If Stanback is 6. Do you draft a WR or go after a relatively young top notch FA wide receiver to replace Glenn. Even if Glenn can play for us next year his snaps are limited. I'd be surprised if Glenn plays next year, but I guess you keep him if he can still contribute and have him as a role player and not a true 2nd receiver. But what does that mean then. Crayton gone? Keep the 3 young guys and draft a WR high or a top FA WR?

It seems that in 90% of the cases it takes time to groom a WR drafted, even if taken real early with a big resume.

Back to the original question. I'm pretty happy with the contribution of Hurd and Austin. They weren't high picks, don't cost us much, and as 2nd year guys, they still have an upside (especially Austin with his size/speed IMHO).

Maybe they are never more than 4 or 5's but they are helping this team.

While Hurd looked ok, I've been wanting more out of him all season. We know Owens and Witten are gonna get mauled. The opportunities are there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not crapping on Crayton or Hurd or Austin, etc. The numbers are ok, but I'd like to see these guys do more to get themselves open and make themselves targets. You'd think w/ the coverages that Owens and Witten get that these guys would most likely be lined up against guys low on the depth charts and could get open.

Who knows, maybe it's Romo who ignores them. Or maybe it's Garrett's gameplan that doesn't utilize them and their abilities correctly or enough. But I see guys w/ lesser talent (Wes Welker) doing a lot to make sure the QB sees them and get themselves open. If Hurd could do what Welker does (since he's supposed to be fast), this offense could take yet another a step up.

Maybe if Owens doesn't play Hurd and Crayton and Austin can take advantage of the opportunity and step up and finally break out!

I think Hurd is not going to get a lot better, could make a decent number two. Austin I think has the tools to be very good, maybe a number 1 but I don't know that he will get there. I would be very comfortable with them as #3 and #4 next year.

Hurd reminds me of Amani Toomer. I think he will be a solid #2 WR in time.

Austin. I don't know. He can't shake a kicker and we expect him to be able to shake a Safety or a LB after catching an underneath route. Big and fast is all over the place in the NFL, quickness and smart moves are what enable WR's to hang around for a few years.

I dont see either one being a #1 or #2 receiver

With no TO and no Glenn, our receiving core is VERY MEDIOCRE.

I thought they both were very average tonight. They kept running routes too close to other receivers and handcuffing the passing game.

I saw that happen even when TO was in the game. The spacing was bad. That's not on the WRs, IMO. That's on the coaches. If it were ONE WR or maybe two that kept messing up, I'd say it's the player. But too many times I saw our WRs not spaced out properly.

Of course I just had the nerve to criticize our OCoord so now the koolaid drinkers will bash me full force.

To be clear, this is a statement. But chalk this up to Bill Parcells. The guy has a special eye for talent. In my opinion, he is the Mac Brown of the NFL--not the best coach, but by all means one of the best eyes for talent.

Kudos, BP. Our roster is thick with wide receivers.

I tend to agree. I think Austin really has more upside then Hurd but at the same time, Hurd is ahead of Austin right now and theres no telling if Miles will ever take the next step.

Austin runs better routes IMO. Hurd seems a little lanky almost looks like he hasn't grown into himself. Austin seems to have better control over his movements. I really would like to see the team get more time to Austin. I think he could really develop into a solid contributor. Maybe nothing great but I think he could really fit into a #3 role in a year or so.

If the Cowboys are to win next week then we will see a lot of Whitten, Fasano, Crayton, Hurd & Austin along with selected plays with Glenn (hopefully). Our OC is going to earn his money next week.

Psychic? Cause he hasn't returned a punt all season.
