Dak Prescott QB Mississippi St
STRENGTHS
Dak might be one of the most improved quarterbacks in this draft. He has a strong arm, and the athletic ability to extend plays once things break down. He's fearless and will stand strong in the pocket even under adverse situations. When he throws in rhythm, he displays the type of accuracy that's required from an NFL QB. He has good leadership skills, and his teammates and coaches respect him. He works better out of the shotgun, but he occasionally plays from under center. He has made a conscious effort to make more plays with his arm as a QB rather than with his legs as a runner. He has disciplined himself to remain in the pocket and throw with accuracy, and to throw the type of throws that an NFL QB has to make. He's shown a remarkable ability to lead his team and to learn how to be a NFL QB.
CONCERNS
While Dak has improved every year, he still struggles with his accuracy when he is on the run, when changing to secondary receivers, and when going deep. He'll also hold onto the ball to long instead of throwing to an outlet receiver. He'll also wait for receivers to get completely open before throwing to them. In the NFL, it's rare to have a completely open receiver, so he's going to have to learn to trust his receivers and to get more accurate to throw into tighter windows. Also, when he breaks the pocket, he rarely attempts to pass. And, when he runs, he fails to protect himself from contact. Heck, he often looks for contact to initiate.
TALENT BOARD: ROUND 2
He'll take time to develop, but it will be well worth it. Dak has improved each year, and I suspect will continue to improve because he's very coachable. He has the ability to take what he learns in practice on to the field and he also has this innate need to win no matter what it takes. Dak loves to win and hates to lose. He doesn’t have to be the star of the game, and he doesn’t have to make the big play, but he does have to win. If he feels the pressure of losing, he'll revert back to his athletic ability and become an athlete "playing" QB instead of a QB.He'll start running with the ball instead of standing in the pocket and making plays. However, the only time I watched him revert to this style of play was after he tried hard all game long to play from the pocket as a "traditional" QB and wasn't having success. He has improved as a "pocket" QB each year. And while he has a lot to learn to become a NFL QB, I know he'll be successful. Dak is a sponge and he's shown he's willing to learn and determined to get better. Any team looking for a future starting quarterback to develop, should select Dak.
