What's your comfort level with Tyron Smith?

One of the best players Dallas has for over a decade. His body, as Sean Lee's, has taken its toll. Given Smith’s downward trend & his high cap hit, it's time for Dallas to move on from him.

Draft a OT in the 3rd round and hope you don't need him.

Tyron isn't playing all 17, so adjust accordingly.

Say he plays 14 and is available for the playoffs (pretty please).
Useless player?

Reminds me of Wares final years. Still very good but waiting for that one hit that’ll aggravate that injury. We need his replacement ASAP

Feel a little bad for him because he delayed the surgery (or was given misleading medical advice) because he along with the franchise legitimately thought that 2017-2019 was there window to win.

What's funny is fans whine that he didn't get the surgery earlier but if he had gotten the surgery earlier and missed the season then those same fans would of screamed "why is he taking an elective surgery during our window to win ?" or "ohh back in my day players would just play through the pain, this generation is soft"

Love the guy! Hate he has more behind him than IN front of him.

Is he one that you kind of go like this?

1. 25%

2. 50%

3. 75%

4. 100%

5. Need to spend a draft pick, he's done.

Have to use a premier pick. If he can come back and play, thats a bonus

I want to find out whether the corrective surgery was effective before I move on. Players the caliber of Tyron Smith don't grow wild in the fields, and they aren't in every draft. I like Slater, but he didn't play last year. I don't have the information to proclaim him a can't miss guy. If Sewell falls to 10, the league isn't as high on him as the draftnicks think. He's probably long gone by 10. Darrisaw isn't a can of Instant Tyron.

I don't think people realize how rare a talent Tyron is. And he is 30 years old.

You don't use a premium pick on a player you HOPE not to have to play. No higher than a 3rd rounder. But yes, insurance is needed. No question about that.

Most people don't.. but I do.. I aint walkin away from a player of his caliber until I am absolutely forced to. Remember Larry Allen making pro bowls paving the way for running back in San Francisco after we gave up on him? Remember Ware beasting in Denver? Just say no to having a repeat of that for releasing Tyron. Can you imagine the teams lining up for his services within minutes of his release? I would go out on a limb that no less than 25 teams would consider him an upgrade over what they have even at 80% of what he was.

I worry about his post-career future.
All these big bodied, powerful, fast athletes are going to have post playing career physical issues. Look at Earl Campbell (who I truly admired as a player and now as a man). I blew a disc out at 23 doing manual labor and now at 67 still have back problems. We almost all put wear and teat on our bodies even the softie desk jockey.

What bad NFL GMs do is wait until something is broken to fix it. Bad GMs (like JJ) believe in their dreams. Every year they believe the best case scenario for players who may actually be in rapid decline. Bad GMs believe the old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” They end up drafting to fix problems instead of drafting to strengthen.

Successful GMs- you know the ones winning SBs- always have a worst case scenario preparation plan. They believe the worst can happen every year, therefore have less dependence on luck and more calculation on preparation for depth at certain positions.

I think Jerry and Stephen mostly only look at the starters depth chart of their roster when planning. Injuries happen to every NFL team at some point and some years you are luckier than others. But the better GMs are good at building a complete 53 man roster.

Regarding Tyron Smith. One of my favorite Cowboys of the last 20 years. Five years ago, IMO, he was THE best player on this team. Now, he’s a question mark. The first ability an NFL player must have is natural ability. The second is availability. Ty Smith has incredible athletic ability. But his availability the last few years is becoming a bigger issue. My comfort level with Ty Smith now is less than 25%.

If we can draft a great LT- maybe someone as good at T Smith, why wouldn’t you take him? It’s one of the hardest positions to find talent in this league.
