When did it really all start to go sour?

2016.

The Cowboys once again committed to not taking the QB position seriously.
So then it would be 2003. When Romo was signed as a UDFA no?

Or how about since they drafted Aikman.

It is amazing that you blame Dak solely for 30 years of ineptness lol.

I get it, but that was one game and DQ knew he was out, however I'll give you that. I remember when players walked into the locker room after games DQ was the coach high 5ing the players, it just seemed like the liked him more than McCarthy.
Oh, I agree Quinn is the ultimate player's coach ( cap backward and all ). But for some odd reason, he did not have the D ready for GB and the league took notice. Remember after the 2022 season he pretty much as 2-3 offers but decided to return for the 2023 season. After the GB his only offer was from the Commanders and he was their 3rd choice. There's a nugget out there that Jerry put in a word for him......

He's a good coach for a min but things tend to go sour after 3-4 years.

2016 when this team was prime for a SB run. Thinking they would actually win a SB with a rookie QB something that's never been done. Handing out a large contract twice with a NTC.

My personal opinion
Even though I wanted to draft the individual
Micah Parsons .
. Like him, dislike him, on the edge about him.
This is when the team started to go backwards. We’ve started to play like individuals and not a team. And individuals don’t win.
, Trade him or keep him
it started in 1994, when johnson left....Aikman, Irvin, Emmitt, Haley and the rest of the team leadership took it upon themselves and ignored Switzer in 1995 to win it all and then its been imploding ever since. ever so often you get a chance to get to playoffs, but it blows up. so this is the 5th time since then this team has gone through this very cycle.

so you enjoyed the wade years? and the parcells years? and the Campo years? nothing went wrong back then?
you must be very young if your memory only goes back to 2016.

Why does everyone crap on Parsons so much? Are you all still so upset about his podcast? Newsflash - all players have hobbies outside of football. Every single one. Because he said something that could be construed as disparaging against the coach? So what? Pretty much everyone on this site has said things much worse. He's the best player on the defense. He clearly loves football. You can tell he wants to play, he wants to win. It's discouraging to put your all into something, then going out there and knowing regardless of how well you play, you will lose the game.
because he is not focused on football. because he is selfish. because he is a me first player. because he pads his stats against lesser teams and disappears when it matters. look at his performance in the playoffs, now go spin a few excuses on why he sucked in those games.

You could even go back and say it started going bad w/ the Amari Cooper trade. Now, Amari is a good player, but we gave up way too much and then paid him way too much.

Why did this make it go bad? Because it was another kneejerk reaction by Jerry because he'd once again done a very poor job evaluating talent. Howso? We went into that season w/ Allen frickin' Hurns as our #1. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

So, why was it so bad? Because while Amari is a good player, he's a low end #1, and then add to it that we had to pay him huge immediately. And that led to the Trysten Hill draft.

Soooo, I kept hearing at the time no one else would've been available. Is that so? If we let that season play out, we'd prolly have been drafting top 15. So, who was there? Brian Burns, Noah Fant, Dexter Lawrence, Josh Jacobs, Miles Sanders, Deebo Samuel, Jeffrey Simmons, Montez Sweat. And a host of others.

By making that trade, Jerry started the downslide that is now wildly apparent. Easy to see coming when you add in the others, Mazi, Schooner, Kelvin. Guys who should be the heart of our team.

Yup, just Jerry's usual crapp. It's OK for fans to tout our 5 bazillion pro bowlers or all pro or whatever, but it is not OK for the GM to use that as an excuse to draft horribly.
actually, I think that was a good move and changed the team. we went from 3-5 to playoff team. paying him was OK, top players get paid. the stupidity was paying him and the year after trading him for a 5th round pick. tell me one good thing that has happened since that stupid trade.

Are you serious? The objective fact is that when we drafted him is when the team started winning 12 or more games per year.

Just amazing that the same person can think Dak is the savior of the team and Parsons is the downfall.

2015 IMO

The franchise had Jerry-centric problems before then, but Terrell Owens to Roy Williams to Brandon Carr and Finally to Greg Hardy in 2015…. This has caused Jerry to be so mistrusting that he only believes in players who came up through his system; abandoning free agency and major trade markets completely.

This is a death knell to any roster construction philosophy in 2024.

The biggest issue since Jimmy left is good honest player evaluation and leadership structure. Not just looking at old highlight reel plays, or remembering years prior big plays in college. Actually looking at all 22 tape and understanding players in their current state. Talking with individuals that can give true character accounts of the person. Some teams are more thorough in their character evaluation, and more conservative in their health and play assessment. Aiming to be relevant can result in the team finally not achieving that low bar of a goal, and this team is a direct result of that approach.
