No. Payton was coaching the Saints for Tony's entire career. Bill left after Romo's first year as starter.

It was a Phillips/Garrett coaching show. Cupcake and Clapper.
But Payton still evidently has a strong relationship with his former pupil. His mentoring sharpened Romo's skills and made him ready to be one of the premier signal-callers in the NFL.

For all of the flak Romo has taken, he does boast a career 95.6 passer rating and averages nearly eight yards per attempt—strong by any measure.

Payton worked with Romo for his first two years in the league……

But my point was he was already a HOFer. Those Bronco teams never would have made the SB without him.
As an outsider, after the fact, with no raging fire of emotion you can see Elway for what he was. But you don't indulge your own QBs the same contextual fairness. Many fans have zero tolerance for their own quarterback, no matter the success, if they don't win it all.

Heck even Peyton Manning was reviled for half of his career by his own fans because he couldn't seem to beat Tom Brady or get his team to the top.

And in each game, this board would made excuses for him by blaming the defense. I especially like the game in Texas Stadium against Peyton Manning where both defenses could not stop the other team.

Until.... in the shadow of his own goalpost, Romo throws into double coverage and gifts the pick to the Broncos. This board blamed the defense and would not acknowledge Romo made that decision. The real tell-tale aspect of that defensive excuse was Manning had the ball within the twenty yard line for a TD and could not crack that defense in that series to score a TD. The Broncos were forced to kick a field goal.
You stepped right in it.

Facts of the game:
-Romo's brings the Cowboys back from 15 pts down to lead 39-38, and then briefly expanded lead
-Romo out-dueled Manning--a lot more yards on fewer throws(5), more TD's and the same # INTs (1).
-Dallas gave up 51 points in the loss

Yet you focus on Romo's one interception. And instead of heaping scorn on the defense, you blame Romo's one bad play for the loss. By bringing up this game and framing it as you do...you prove my point and disqualify yourself as an objective reviewer.

Romo: 25/36 506 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT. 140 RTG
P. Manning: 33/42 , 4 TD, 1 INT. 129.6 RTG

Some of the starting o-lineman blocking during Tony's tenure. It's pain just to remember...

Montrae Holland
Phil Costa
Bill Nagy
Jermey Parnell
Nate Livings
Ryan Cook
Mackenzy Bernadeau

Run for your life! Little surprise he suffered multiple back surgeries.

Huh? You list Romo's, Aikman's and Staubach's career INT rate %s, but at the same time, you only list Dak's 2022 INT rate % but not his career's?

You sneaky guy. Why didn't you stick to the "career INT % rate" subject and list Dak's "career" INT % rate like you did the others? Trying to play mind games to make your boy, Romo, look better than Dak, huh?

For the record, Dak's up-to-date career INT % rate is at 2.0 which obliterates Romo's 2.7%.

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/P/PresDa01.htm

That's because Dak's single season career high of 17 INTs in 2022 drastically hurt Dak's previous career INT % rate which was much lower in the 1s%.

Romo's career INTs total during 10 starting seasons: 117

Dak's career INTs total during 7 starting seasons: 65

By far, Dak is much better a protector of passes than Romo ever was. Actually, Romo threw almost double in 10 starting years what Dak has thrown in 7.

If I was "sneaky" I just wouldn't have mentioned Prescott at all. I didn't mention the specific rate because his career is in process.

I praised Prescott's over-all career INT rate projection. I also noted the bad 2022 numbers. My comments were objective and neutral...your words are hysterical and partisan.

Since you want full disclosure:

Playoff Interceptions

Tony Romo............. .33 per game (2 in 6 games)
Dak Prescott.......... .83 per game (5 in 6 games)
Roger Staubach..... 1.12 per game (19 in 17 games)
Troy Aikman........... 1.13 per game (17 in 15 games)

Oh, but it gets better. Isn't it a better to take the top guys and then look at what they did per season or per game? Of course it is. Some guys simply have shorter careers. This absolutely is why data analysts often prefer ratios to simple totals.

He's not Dan Fouts, though.

Much more to come, but let's pause to review what we've learned so far:

Of the four most recent great Dallas Quarterbacks:

-Tony was torpedoed by playing alongside the worst defenses (by far)
-Tony endured the worst offensive lines through his career
-Tony had the worst Head Coaches and offensive schemes
-Tony was #1 in clutch comebacks and 4th Quarter/OT performance. (2nd best in NFL history)
-Tony was #1 or #2 in interception prevention amongst Dallas big Four
-Tony was #1 in TDs per pass
-Tony was #1 in moving down the field - yards per pass

The Romo critics are running for the exits. AFRAID. Embarrassed. Butt-whipped.
I'd like to hear from them...Ready for More?

What a bunch of bunk. Really?

For the record, the Cowboys 2007 Oline was ranked 10th overall (7th in pass protection; 14 in run blocking). They had the #2 points scoring Offense and the #14 ranked Defense. The 2007 Cowboys ended up with a Cowboys franchise record 13 Pro Bowlers (highest ever in the NFL at the time), and they continued it into the 2008 season with a better ranked Oline (#2 overall) and Defense (#8).

https://www.espn.com.sg/fantasy/football/ffl/story?id=3447747

The Cowboys' Oline took a slight hit in production in 2009, but their Oline still finished #10 overall (#2 in run blocking).

https://www.pff.com/news/2009-offensive-line-rankings

The Romo-led Cowboys also had the #2 ranked Oline to start the 2014 season, identical to the 2008 season.

This talk about how Romo never had a good Oline to play behind throughout his career is a bunch of poppycock. No one should take what you spew as gospel since it's so statistically inaccurate and intentionally misconstrued. Sadly, there are already some who 'like' your lies.
