Who Else looks at Miles Austin and Thinks...

I know..it's a slap in the face to LeBron to be mentioned with that trash.
Awwww...somebody's grapes taste more sour then usual? The only type of Cleveland fan is a front-runner-- let's not be calling other team's organization's "trash".

he doesn't have nearly Glenn's quicks, or burst

Alvin Harper with those '90s teams would probably be his best bet

Austin needs to develop his appetite for hookers and partying if we're gonna start making Harper comparisons.

Nobody on here, and I mean NOBODY, has watched Austin more than I have. I watched him every single home game in college (I live 2 minutes from the field), and laughed when he went undrafted. He is extraodinary, he attracted double-teams and met them with a smile, a swim move, and a touchdown. I'm SO excited to see him finally get his chance at something special.

35 catches, 425 yards, 3-4 TD's, 4+ Defensive PI calls of over 40 yards.

I love Miles as a player, but his transitional lateral ability is second only to the QE II. He's got super stiff hips which is going to keep him at a 3rd WR spot for his career.

The guy we just got rid of has super stiff hips as well.

So did James Lofton. And Randy Moss. And Sterling Sharpe. And Willie Gault.

Were they 3rd WR's?

Austin will not be a Terry Glenn.

If TG had his knees, he'd still be in Dallas and I really think Dallas would have their playoff win and then some.

I'm not sure people realize how good he was. Speed, hands and excellent route running. TG was a monster.
This.

I don't think Austin has 'proven' he's a legitimate #1 or #2 WR in this league.

I do think he proved he could run the intermediate routes and get separation as well as catch the ball. He has been able to get deep. I'd like him to catch more long balls and see him adjust to the ball better. He's not going to get interference calls all the time.

Yeah. He has things to prove. But I really like his skills.

Inane comparisons. It's like saying Sam Hurd runs great routes, therefore he'll be the next Jerry Rice. There's more than a bit of talent differential there.

Miles has speed, not quickness, but very little lateral transition ability as I said before. He'll be a #3 and could put up some very good numbers with the guy we have behind center.

Winner: Use of Obscure Abreviation/Nautical Reference in a Football Post.

Thank you, thank you very much. First, I'd like to thank the Academy, my agent,
David Stern for completely sweeping the Donaghy incident under the rug like nothing happened,
David Stern for failing to acknowledge the garbage officiating out there every day,
David Stern for being Kevin Bacon in Animal House "There is no need to panic, all is well with the league",
David Stern for letting the world know the NBA is in great shape despite teams using any number of gimmicks to get anyone to show up at games during the regular season, and for presiding over a league that may have the first salary cap contraction in history,
David Stern for not being Gary Betman.

Oh, this is a football board. Seems like a * NBA board with half the crap in these threads.

Ummm...

You preferenced your theory of him only being a #3 his whole career on his stiff hips as if anyone with stiff hips can only be a #3.

I gave you a few guys who became #1's.

How were the comparisons inane?

And list me three WR's who have this great lateral transition ability you think every WR who ever wants to be more than a #3 has to have.

lol, but he might end up having a longer career just because he's not like Harper the individual, and just might end up being a productive starter that doesn't need a great WR opposite him to be successful

I would absolutely love that. I just dont see the leaping ability or hands that Moss/Colston have.

I see the leaping ability... Look at the San Diego preseason game last year.

He showed it on his TD reception in the PS game vs Denver as well. Jump ball to the back of the endzone.

Exactly! I think if this guy looked at the combine numbers of all 3 players and checked out their vertical leaps, he'd be surprised at which of them has the legit 40 inch vertical.

Not too many athletes in the world have those.

The summation of my theory on Miles specifically is that his level of talent will be mitigated by his lack of transitional lateral ability. He'd be a good #2 if he juke someone besides the man who's to give up the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge in the fall.

James Lofton had 171 catches and 3000 yards in his 3rd season.
Gault had 2000+ yards and 100+ catches in his 3rd season.
Sterling Sharpe had 200+ catches and 3300+ yards in his 3rd season.
Randy, well, he was doing just okay with 43 TD's in his 3rd season.

Trying to even remotely equate Miles Austin with those four receivers who were better in every skill set necessary for a WR is justifiably dismissed as inane.

Marvin Harrison
Fitzgerald
Steve Smith, Carolina

Each of those guys runs good to great routes, have a fluid nature to their stride, but can stiffen and turn on a dime. Problem with Miles is that he can't get that good fluid step to the outside to break in, or vice versa. You can have good and great route runners who are stiff, but they can make up for it in quickness. Miles cannot. His skill set simply isn't well developed or great enough naturally to overcome his one most major issue.
