Then why are you asking? If you like it, it does what you want and you're willing to spend the extra cash. Then do it!

Because I've been on sweet PC's too, but after a little time, they break.

If Mac's don't do this as often, to me they are worth it. But since I've only used my cousins for a few weeks, I wanted to get some other peoples thoughts on them who have used them for years.

I didn't mean to offend you nyc. It was just a question. I truly meant no harm.

You can say "a great number" but you can also say "a very small minority" of professionals earn their keep with a Mac.

If you try to quantify it based on anyone who uses a computer in any respect, you might have a point, but if you're talking about professionals who's entire living is earned primarily with a computer and not as an aid, you would probably be wrong. You would probably have to gauge it by vocation.

As a lawyer, is a computer a primary function of your job? Every influx of advertising intake you swallow everyday is touched by a Mac, from the magazines, kiosks, billboards, etc. Motion graphics, as theebs said and more 3D houses still use PC, while advertising mo-graph is turning over to Mac, with bootcamp for Windows as needed.

The real thing is, most Windows users are completely unaware of what Mac is doing, in terms of it's architecture and capabilities, which is why they trumpet the same old excuses. Apple markets itself to the candy crowd of pop culture, because the average user doesn't pay 3,000. for a machine like professionals do for the towers. They don't have to advertise for us, we know already.

Do you mean physically break or software problems?
If you don't inadvertently get a lemon, physically a Mac will give you no trouble, (I had a lemon at one point and Apple gave me a brand spanking new update after I screamed loud enough to the BBB). You can run the same OS for a very long time if you have no need for specific drivers if you're not updating peripherals. It will just work.

Absolutely.

No kidding? I'm serious; I understand as a communication tool what purpose it serves, as for practicing law how has it changed the business of law?

I imagine most lawyers spend at least 95% of their day staring at a computer screen.

Lawyers are either researching, drafting or communicating (I can get up to 200 e-mails a day on my busiest days).

I spend a lot of time on conference calls, but even then I'm starting at a computer, either responding to e-mails or taking notes or whatever.

Whoa, dude. You are so far off it's stupid. You think only real computer work is done on Macs? You and all Mac users are in the minority and it isn't even close.

Artistic related vocations -> Macs are primarily used.

Everything else -> PC

How many Accountants do you know that use a Mac in their profession? Zero. Speaking of quantify, how many Quants (Quantitative analyst) use a Mac. Thats right, Zero. Data entry, HPC, registers, DBAs, and even programmers. The only programmers that use a Mac to program, program for Macs!

For an attorney, it's not an unreasonable. I used to work in a law firm. Their blackberries are their lifeline.

I'm in development so I get about 50 email just for informational purposes. Now when the corp wants to send out email-blasts, I may get around 60 or 65.

Ha! I wish it was spam.

Mostly, it's bug and build notifications.

I get them too and I'm not even part of the development staff! :banghead: I have a filter setup that filters anything that says "JIRA" into it's own folder and I go in there once a day and mark everything as read. (after looking for something specific in the title)

Of course, I get 50k emails a day from system reports. Stuff like cronjobs completed, slow database replication, system time sync status across the entire infrastructure, hardware that fails over to backups, and server backup status reports.

Physically break. I've gone through several hard drive crashes, and 3 motherboard break downs. All within the last 3-4 years. Dells and HP's.

The last sentence of your post is what i'm really looking for. Something that will just flat out work. I realize everything can break, or go bad, but the luck I've had with PC's makes me want to vomit. I just want a tank.

Panasonic Toughbooks are about as tough as you're going to get. It's a PC, but it's designed to not break when dropped, etc. Hell, they even look like tanks. They're used in police departments all over the country as the computers in the cars and I assure you, police officers are not gentle with these things.

They just work and they don't break.

Read what I state, not what makes it easier for you to get bent out shape.
Real work? All work is real work, what I'm referring to, which isn't hard to understand, is people who are not using it as an aid, as in a means to communicate, as in getting 200+ emails. That is not much far afield of your claim about 'surfing the web'. Phones aid in communication, does anyone claim to be a phone expert? That the product of their work is a product of a phone?

You're not talking facts, you're throwing out statements for something to say. Example: Zero Accountants? Do you know why there does and has existed accounting software for the Mac? Because accountants use it.

Do you know why quantitative analyst software exists for Mac? Because people use it.

When software doesn't sell, it dies. Zero users would have killed them long ago.

The whole consensus equals worth or value is a disingenuous aspect to make a point from anyway. That's my fault for even entertaining it; everyone knows the majority uses Windows. This does nothing to the fact that you are wrong in your assertion of what a Mac will do. Your first claim was all it does is iTunes, surf and play with photos. I gave a full accounting of why that is wrong. You are wrong about virus too and overall level of usage.

By your way of reasoning, the fact that there are more Honda Civics on the road than BMW's can only lead one to the knowledge that the Civic is a superior car. Not.

My lemons replacement is a gem. I leave it on and it never goes down. The same can be said about the one I use at work, (which is almost the exact model). My software doesn't unexpectedly quit, it doesn't freeze and I deal with nothing in terms of technological issues, whether working or playing. I multi-task using multiple 3D software packages and Photoshop all day. As well as goof off on these forums.

Barring any oddities, you'll be happy with what you get.

I was the JIRA admin for where I work. I spent half my day doing JIRA stuff for people, I'm glad its no longer part of my work function.
