Campo took over maybe the greatest cover corner to ever live, and safety who in my opinion should be a Hall of Famer. Campo didn't really improve them, they just kept being Deion and Woody under him. And on the other side of the coin under Campo, George Teague was still George Teague. Phillipi Sparks was still Phillipi Sparks. Mario Edwards was still Mario Edwards. Can't say we ever got a player off the street who nobody really wanted and he turned them into a Pro Bowl player, the way Bowles did with Hamlin.
So Darren Woodson did not improve at all form his rookie season?

Why did James Washington say that Campo was the best position coach he ever had?

Campo became the DB coach in 1989 when Dallas was 1-15 he did not just take over when Sanders came to Dallas. Woodson was a LB not a safety so this ideal that Campo was given a bunch of great players is non-sense. As for Bowles he has not done much, heck Roy's game take a bit of a turn when Woodson leaves? where the hell is the DB coach that is his job. I don't hate Bowles but he did not do much here in Dallas to be singing his praises especially when so many through out the season and been *****ing about our secondary.

It's not like Hamlin was junk. Hamlin was very highly regarded at one time. He got a bad head injury and a bad rap, and he spent his summer looking for a good money deal. When that didn't happen, he came to Dallas and thrived while being surrounded by better players than he has played with before.

This was the 1990 Dallas Cowboys secondary that Campo worked with so I don't see how anyone can claim that he had it easy and rich with talent
LCB Isaac Holt
RCB Manny Hendrix (10)
CB Robert Williams (6)
SS Vince Albritton (8)
S James Washington (8)
FS Ray Horton

I think we can safely say now that that theory has been debunked.

Must be in the minority here but I don't see how this is anything to be excited about...Secondary has been such an achilles heel for this side of the ball and would've loved seeing someone aggressive and perhaps even innovative to come in here...Not sure how a retread is going to change things for the better.

Campo could have been the best coach in the world and it wouldnt have mattered. the best QB he had was Wright and Jerry wouldnt let him play. Instead he got Hutchinson, Carter, Leaf He had an underachieving Adams, Allen and a Solomon Page who plain sucked at the tackles. Our center hadnt started to take steroids yet. Emmitt Smith was being compared to Hambrick. ismail was decent but the tandem of him and galloway was so uninspiring we were hoping for milegage from guys like mcgarity, rambo and williams. novacek wsa gone Lafleur was hurt and we had Harris on his last legs. Nicky Sualua and Robert Thomas anyone?

on defense you had dat woodson ellis and a legion of scrubs. We all sat through the mental institution reclamation program as our defensive tackles broke down before our eyes. Wed like Coakley so much we wanted to trade him. Guys like Zellner, Myers, nix and Evans were our defenisve line rotation and we had a series of scrubs to play with Woody in guys like Goodrich, Larrimore, Ross, edwards, hawthorne, dixon and everyones favorite Lynn Scott.

The fact that people are against Campo because of what he couldnt do with guys like that and want to use him as a scapegoat for that debaucle is reprehensible.

if you want to get mad at anyone get mad at Jones for putting us in that position and open your eyes to what Campo has done as a DC/DB coach everywhwere hes ever been. its literally been a legion of top 10 pass defenses.

The lowest the jags ever were in passer rating and picks --the stats that matter-- was ninth and was as good as fourth in the league. He DEVELOPED Mathis into a probowler and until this year and Nelson he didnt have very much to work with.

But if you think for one moment that it was Campo and not the talent that caused 15-33 then you are just deluding yourself. You try winning with Hutchinson, Leaf, Carter and no cornerbacks nor interior lines on either side of the ball and see how well you do.

Campo knows how to run a secondary. He is not here to be the Coodinator or HC he is here to work with this secondary and has proven over the years that he is pretty darn good at doing that.

Campo was the dc when we signed that hack, sanders.

If you want to make a case against dave campo, point to the 91 divisonal loss at detroit. The secondary, mostly horton and holt were a step below terrible.

Dear Lord, we have Cowboys fans standing and applauding Dave Campo returning to the sidelines and making long, drawn out excuses for his head coaching tenure. I swear to God, I must be living in the Twilight Zone. This is just surreal.

Dave Campo was a bad head coach. No one disputees that. But he didn't have much to work with. Surely that is undisputed as well.

Campo isn't a bad positional coach though, and he probably was the best available. Yeah, it's weird thinking about him coming back, and yeah, there are plenty of bad memories. But good Lord, don't go overboard with it.

I don't see anyone doing that. They're just making a case that Campo is a very good DB coach. They're also saying that his talent level was sub-optimal while he was head coach. Both true statements.

Campo on board?

The Cowboys have called a 2 p.m. press conference at the team's Valley Ranch headquarters to announce the hiring of an assistant coach. Wade Phillips is expected name Cowboys former head coach Dave Campo as his new secondary coach. Campo was previously the Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach and worked with the secondary.

Campo interviewed with the Cowboys on Monday.

According to a source, the Cowboys have plucked Dave Campo to their new secondary coach.
The Cowboys were resolute in getting Campo on board, as the Jaguars initially turned down a Dallas request to speak with their assistant head coach. But a second shot at it got the Cowboys the permission they needed, and Campo will return to Valley Ranch.

There will be a press conference at 2 p.m. to welcome him. More in a bit ...

What an incredibly ridiculous thread.

Purely from a layman's point of view, I believe position coaches have much more effect on young guys transitioning from College to the Professional Level.

Does anyone really believe Dave Campo is going to have a negative effect on Terence Newman, Ken Hamlin and Anthony Henry? Of course not. He will be there to serve in the capacity of a motivator, provide information and advice.

To continue, I think it is extremely advantagous that our younger Defensive Backs will be working one-on-one with a former NFL Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. NFL Head Coaches, whether past or present are brimming with knowledge, advice and insight on how to become what Tom Landry dubbed "A Pro".

as much as I often respect your opinion and enjoy your posts, the inclusion of the words Campo and Landry in the same post makes me queasy.
