Why are fans so afraid of taking a RB early?

I think when you improve the oline or dline your whole team is stronger. I've seen what Barkley and McCaffery have done for their teams and it's compile yardage and not turning them into contenders. I don't care if they draft a RB it's just what we see around the league.

The biggest talking point I keep seeing about the whole "don't take a RB early" is because you can get one in later rounds and they don't last long.

Is it not a asset to take a RB in the 1st round?

I get him for 4 years with a option year which is 5 years on a favorable rookie deal.

I can think franchise him for one year at 11-12 million......

I'm getting 6 years of a guys young prime career on a affordable deal and I'm getting one of the better RB prospects in this draft....

Will you get 6 prime years out of any other position not Quarterback? Maybe wide receiver?

I'm just trying to figure out why should I be afraid to take a RB early like others seem to be. If I was the Eagles and had the 10th pick in the draft I for sure would think long and hard about Bijan Robinson.
I don’t think they are afraid. I just think you can get better dollar prospect later on a running back is only as good as the offensive line, and for the most part.

Overall, RBs are not a significant commodity on NFL rosters. They have a short life cycle and are best utilized with a complimentary scheme that includes play calling balance and a stout group up front. I would consider trading a 1st round pick where RB was the BPA and the biggest need. Of course, RB is not the biggest need for the Cowboys since they franchised Pollard and the 26th pick should be utilized accordingly.
Great simple explanation! The only worry would be that Pollard could have a down year like Gallup. I know different injuries but we see this frequently happen to players that suffer season ending injuries.

Why do so many fear picking a 1st round RB?

They’ve bought into the lies perpetuated my the sports media.
Yep and I hate it. It’s why I admire the Cowboys at times. They took Tyler Smith despite everyone saying they shouldn’t….I prefer the front office to be that way.

Of the top 12 running backs in NFL history, 6 were instrumental in helping their teams win Super Bowls; 2 more played in Super Bowls; only 4 never played in a Super Bowl.

Of the top 12 pass rushers in NFL history, only 5 were instrumental in leading their teams to Super Bowl wins; 3 more played in Super Bowls, and 4 never played in a Super Bowl.

Of the top 12 running backs, 10 were 1st round picks. Of those 10, only Emmitt Smith was not a top 10 pick. 2 others were 3rd round picks, both of whom reached the Super Bowl, but didn’t win.

Saying that top running backs are not important to winning Super Bowls makes about as much sense as saying you shouldn’t spend a 1st round pick on a pass rusher. It is completely ahistorical nonsense.
I agree. They think because Brady and Mahomes didn’t need one we don’t. I make moves that allow us to be the best team left standing. Not to emulate the Patriots.

I understand that line of thinking. I just don’t understand waiting on running back in favor of an offensive lineman I can get in the second round is smarter. That running back in the first round allows me to have him on a cheap deal for 5 years.

Fear is probaby the wrong way to look at it.

I don't think people are afraid to take a TB. I think people have taken a look around the league, how other teams roster build, have seen where are franchise went after we used a first round pick on a TB and have decided there are better ways to build a roster and better uses for a prime pick than on a TB.

You can get a TB in the 2nd round. Or third round. Or later rounds. You can get an OL and DL at 26 and him on a cheap deal for 5 years.

Having a TB on a rookie deal for 5 years isn't really that big of an incentive to me. I'd rather have a OL or DL or QB or WR on a rookie deal given the market values of the positions for veterans compared to TBs.

Elite RBs are barely even worth it on their first contract. Pollard is the 6th or 7th highest paid RB in football. Are you really trying to be in the top spot again for RB salaries?

Keep in mind that the no RB for the last 10 Super Bowl winners made over $3 million a year. And you want two high salary RBs?

100%. Idc about perceived value. Of course we can get a serviceable back later, but an all pro in a position that touches the ball 15-20 times a game has a massive impact.

DMC was serviceable, but Zeke took the offense to another level. That was on a team with a paper thin defense. The impact BJ could have on this team is exciting to imagine.

All said and done give me bpa in the trenches, a TE or a RB. Just don't pass on one because the position doesnt merit the draft stock. Take the best player.

Because like I've said before, they're only good for 3-4 years and most don't get to a second contract, and if they do their production diminishes. Better off taking a player that will be around for a while in the first round.

It is to me because I think a RB will give me 4 or 5 great years. I expect a good guard to give me 8 to 10. So I’d prefer to have the guard on a 4 year than a RB.

Last year's 26th pick was Jermaine Johnson. His cap hit this year is $3 million. That would rank 21st for a TB in the league for this season. It's barely inside the Top 50 for offensive guards. Just inside the Top 60 for an OT. Just inside the Top 100 for a defensive lineman. Just inside the Top 70 for a WR.

So I don't get the logic that you prefer a TB on a rookie deal than some of these other positions.

We all have seen that the best teams have built solid OLs and DLs. I think we have a OL in a state of flux due to injuries and FA attrition. Why have money invested in a premiere RB with a suspect OL? Zeke was great during his first few years in the league, but benefited from a talented OL. Our DL got throttled by the run throughout the season…we need to upgrade DL as well. I think good RBs can be found much easier in the latter rounds of the draft, while good OL and DL players are harder to find. RB by committee won’t prevent Dallas from making the playoffs, but a porous OL that cannot sustain blocks or protect Dak; and a DL that cannot stop the run consistently just very well might prevent a playoff appearance.
I need Jerry to make rationale, prudent picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds; no splash picks. These players should contributors. How many early round picks has Jerry squandered? This team always seems to think they are just 1-2 players away and overestimate the talent level in this team.

You are saying bad they not drafted CEH they would’ve won in 21? I don’t see that.
I am saying, they picked him in first round. not getting much out of him. could they have picked a CB? perhaps help them against Cinci and not lose 27-24. maybe a LB? or maybe another WR treat, like Higgins or Pittman? CEH contribution in that game was 6 carries for 36 yards!!!

Because the # of productive years you get out of a RB does not make it worthwhile. Also a RB's play and productivity as a RB is directly linked to how good the line is. Have a solid line you can take a late round RB and be productive. Also with a solid line you are also keeping your QB upright.

A offensive linemen is needed but not for next year.....Steele, Tyron, Tyler, Biadicz and Martin are your starters. But alright let's believe that they need a guard....you can get a guard in the 2nd or 3rd. With no issue.

You do not need to use a 1st round pick on offensive linemen every time. No other team builds a roster that way. McCarthy has a history of building good offensive lines without investing high capital in it. He's shown us his eye when he was the only person in the world that had Steele starting week 1 for us a free years ago and we thought it was a mistake.
Tyron at his age is guaranteed to not make it through the season. You need competent backups you are grooming for continuity.
