We'd have a good defense if
  • Sean Lee was playing
  • We drafted Landon Collins instead of Byron jones
  • Signed Calais Campbell.
Or
  • Hitchens didn't get hurt
  • We signed Antoine Bathea
  • Signed Zach Brown ( 1 year 1.5 million ) at linebacker
  • Irving didn't get caught for PEDs
Or
  • Signed Zach brown as insurance
  • Signed Calais Campbell
  • Kept Barry church

This bend don't break mantra eats at me.
Its really a translation of "Hey my players suck so I have to scheme so they dont make mistakes"

For years we have a DC who loves this simplistic defense that gives QBs easy reads. Like i told my dad earlier Rod Marinelli is just a glorified defensive line coach. Hes out of touch with trying to scheme vs modern offenses. Yeah sure he is a great teacher of technique and a good motivator but when it comes to Xs and Os he is a crap coach.

because we go from Monte Kiffin to Rod Marinelli two very conservative defenses that does not do well in todays NFL I'm guessing. The game has passed both coaches by but we want to hang on to their previous accomplishments.
How are the Seahawks defense doing.

For all who keeps saying we haven't spent enough resources on defense, take a closer look at the top draft picks we used on both offense and defense in the JG era.

Code:
Number of draft picks used in top 3 rounds since 2011
Round: Offense: Defense:
1 4 3
2 1 6
3 3 4

As you can see, we've actually spent more top picks on defense in the JG era.

The talent isn't that bad. The main problem is the defensive coaching staff needs an overhaul. Marinelli is just not good enough. Offensive coordinators seem to easily figure out what he's trying to do and he's shown no ability to counter what teams are throwing at his defense.

The other issue is the Cowboys take way too many gambles with their early draft picks. They act as if they have so much talent on the roster that they can afford to take gambles on projects like Jaylon Smith, Byron Jones, and JJ Wilcox. Way too many draft picks like that when there were safer players available with better resumes.

This team HAS some difference makers on defense. Tank is a difference maker. Irving is a difference maker. Lee is a stud. Lewis is coming on. Collins is doing fine.

You can't have a defense full of all pros and also an offense full of them. We have enough talent. We have piss poor game planning on defense.

Being aggressive might get you beat quickly on occasion, but it puts pressure on the other team. Consistent pressure causes mistakes.

If they give up a quick TD being aggressive it would at least get them off the field and keep them fresh. This slow bleed **** is killing the team. It works fine for teams that shoot themselves in the foot but when you play good teams you have to show up and make a play.

Take a look at my post that's immediately after yours.

Sure they are drafting defensive players, but they are taking too many unnecessary risks. Take last year for instance. There were plenty of other healthy defensive players that could be helping us right now but instead they chose to roll the dice on Jaylon Smith. He missed all of last year and he looks horrible this year. So basically we're throwing away 2 years on the guy.

You can also go back to Byron Jones. He was an average player in college. I watched him play. There was nothing special about his game at all. But for some reason the Cowboys fooled themselves into believing he was one of the better DBs on the board.

Isn't it obvious?

They gamble too damn much. Wasted Claiborne picks didn't help.

Coach em up!!!

Yep. It's not that they are not putting enough resources to the defense but choosing the wrong players.

For one thing, we're running an outdated scheme. It's passive by nature, "bend but don't break" garbage. Guys who left this year have suddenly become playmakers elsewhere. I wonder why?
Thank god someone else can see that this outdated scheme stinks, what wrong with a 1 tech DT with size? You draft the players that fit Hot Rods style. ever DT has to be 295 lbs and quick? this Defense needs it all - LB, SS, DT, CB New defensive coach
