For all who keeps saying we haven't spent enough resources on defense, take a closer look at the top draft picks we used on both offense and defense in the JG era.

Code:
Number of draft picks used in top 3 rounds since 2011
Round: Offense: Defense:
1 4 3
2 1 6
3 3 4

As you can see, we've actually spent more top picks on defense in the JG era.

Then we need to blame coaching on defense

Cowboys lucked into their offensive pick successes, imo. The history of this franchise shows they're incapabale of consistently selecting talent from the draft.

It's coaching .. for whatever reason we don't seem to find that defensive coordinator who teaches the basics .. motivates the players .. places them in the right scheme.. the talent is there .. we just need that DC who galvanizes it

We drafted Lawrence with the 34th pick and Mo in the top of the first. Lee was drafted in the second and Jones at safety in the late first round. Is it that we dont know what we are doing or are these players not living up to expectations? Mo looked like a steal when we drafted him and stayed hurt his entire time in dallas.

for me the Defense starts at DT position. Too many big runs right up the gut. If you can't stop that rarely will things go well. I am not seeing Malik Collins anchor well on running plays. He gets pushed sideways too easily. I really think Dallas just has to succumb here and get massive immovable DT. I no longer care if he can't shot the gap just be difficult to run on. The RDE are not containing the edge which exposes our poor LB play recently. I also think we are in the territory of talking about new DC.

I think there is enough talent at this point for them to at least have a decent defense. It will never be dominant but it should not be so easy for a QB to just sling the ball around. Look at the KC Chiefs right now...with Berry out, it's not like they are loaded at every position on defense. They have Justin Houston and Marcus Peters, who are probably some of the best at their position but the other 9 guys aren't superstars or high 1st round picks.
You are spot on, if you look at other teams, no no one is loaded at every position. At some point you have to begin to look at the coaching, or lack there of.

I'm starting to second guess letting McClain go.

Take a look at my post that's immediately after yours.

Sure they are drafting defensive players, but they are taking too many unnecessary risks. Take last year for instance. There were plenty of other healthy defensive players that could be helping us right now but instead they chose to roll the dice on Jaylon Smith. He missed all of last year and he looks horrible this year. So basically we're throwing away 2 years on the guy.

You can also go back to Byron Jones. He was an average player in college. I watched him play. There was nothing special about his game at all. But for some reason the Cowboys fooled themselves into believing he was one of the better DBs on the board.
Can you throw in Randy Gregory too

We run a scheme figured out 20+ years ago... that's why...

Don't worry. Come this offseason the same people who are complaining about the defense now will be clamoring for an offensive tackle or guard or speedy WR or elite TE to replace Witten.

Guaranteed.

For one thing, we're running an outdated scheme. It's passive by nature, "bend but don't break" garbage. Guys who left this year have suddenly become playmakers elsewhere. I wonder why?
Church had a pick-6 today for a TD so he never did that with Dallas I don't think. The problem is Marinelli has his scheme any tries to make the players he has fit into the scheme and philosophy what he should do is look at the Players he has and then making all new scheme just for those players.

1. This system we play will suck the life out of any player we get. It is predicated on not being aggressive and making plays but rather sitting back and letting the offense do what they want and just pray you don't give up a big play.

2. We can't draft to save our lives on that side of the ball. Either they flat out suck or suspended.

3. We are so far behind the 8ball on that side that it will take awhile. We don't even have enough starters worth a crap, much less depth.

4. Coaching. Coaching. Coaching. This staff hinders any player on it.

I really wish Broaddus was right and Marinelli would have left to be Lovie Smith’s DC after 2014.

Think about this...other than coaching for his buddy Lovie, what NFL team out there gives Marinelli a D.C. job if available tomorrow? None.

Our scheme does not fit today's rules AT ALL. The coaches and Joneses simply can't comprehend that.
