“ never” is only an opinion. Much like 25% is. Nobody has a crystal ball.

I get the frustration . And it’s validated. But the bigger priority for ownership , which fans thoughts don’t always align with, is remaining relative playoff caliber team. You can’t choke in the playoffs if you don’t get there.
We both agree on this. But the last sentence is interesting. There are a lot of people that believe we don't need Dak just to make the playoffs. The Bucs don't have our roster, and they got there and won a playoff game with Mayfield. The Giants did it a year ago with Jones. If you have a good roster, you can get to the playoffs with a middling QB. You don't need to pay one 60M a year.

I can see if we're super bowl contenders year in and year out, like the 70s, early 80s, and half of the 90s, sure, pay the man. But we're not. What are we paying for?

5. Jerry’s Hubris

He’s already committed to being the best GM this team could possibly have specifically because of how he navigates contracts, so not completing this one would be a public blow to his declaration

You’d have to ask our owner :)

We know what he thinks. Making the playoffs is enough. Anything can happen blah blah blah.

What's worse, losing like the Packers and Lions did? Or losing like we did?

That’s fine. But if our intention was to let him walk why didn’t we try and force the issue on NTC by threatening to bench him?

Walking away from Prescott with no compensation will also be laughed at.

Which makes us believe , whether we agree or not, that the intention was or is to resign him.

I’m not sure Jethro wouldn’t be more critiqued for letting him walk without compensation than caving on contract. Especially since he’s expected to fetch Market Price in FA.
”threatening to bench him”, how would Jerry Jones explain that to the coaching staff, virtually all of which are not signed beyond this season. And how would that play in the locker room. Dak Prescott cannot be forced to do anything by anyone associated with the Dallas Cowboys.

1. Path of least resistance… both sides want the status quo, and the easiest decision for JJ to make is to extend and cross his fingers that Dak will come thru this time

2. No alternative at QB… if there was a viable option to take the torch from Dak on the roster, maybe this decision gets harder. The fact is JJ and the FO have failed to develop anyone in the wings to take the wheel, so extending Dak is inevitable IMO

3. Scape-goat factor… JJ loves his image. Paying Dak makes him look like the good guy and the pressure to deliver shifts over to Dak to make it happen. If Dallas fails to win a SB with Dak, Prescott goes down as a (highly paid) failure.

4. Morale boost…. Signing Dak creates a boost to team morale and establishes some positive press. JJ loves to make a splash and steal headlines. Extension incoming IMO

For the record, I don’t think the chances of Dak winning a SB are very good. Put it at 25%. That said, he is our best shot considering where we are roster wise.

I am preparing for another 4 years of futility and will hope against hope things will break our way.
Good post - refreshing...

Sure , our coaching staff are on a 1 year deal, basically lame duck. Not like they would have much influence if Jethro & Son decided were moving on . And sitting Dak if he didn’t want to play ball in a trade.

First of all how many Baker mayfield's are out there available and how much money did he get? And I don't feel like doing this this morning but how much is Prescott's dead cap if he's not here and then how much money do you gotta spend for a guy like Baker Mayfield and can that guy have that one season like Baker Mayfield because right now that's a one off.... And again I'm not doing a lot of research on this but I believe he's in an awfully weak division but you pay a guy like Baker Mayfield plus Prescott's dead cat for not being here in the next two years isn't that the same thing as just keeping Prescott because we've been to the playoffs 5 out of the last eight years with Prescott and while people call that futile and average it's not average it's way above average having a top six team is not average..

I think in this case you have to look at the Cowboys needing to start Trey Lance and if he turns out to be terrible you're gonna get a high draft pick and you start over with a young guy but you cannot use a middle of the road veteran like Baker Mayfield because you have to pay them and when you add it up with the dead cap it's the same you have to go full young full cheap

and by the way that also means that you can't pay Trey Lance any more than you're paying Cooper rush I mean you might as well start Cooper rush or a guy like him for about 6,000,000 because you're not going for the $30 million guy'cause that doesn't make sense if everyone's talking about the cap hit and don't pay Prescott because he's gonna hurt us the next five years you also can't pay a guy like Baker Mayfield and also expect that to be repeated..

It's apples and oranges in my opinion and it shouldn't even be discussed... If you wanna be really bad for the next 5 years maybe even 10 looking for a quality quarterback even up to Prescott's level and even getting us back to the playoffs that's OK but don't act like getting to the playoffs is such a bad thing and why do we care about the damn salary cap we don't pay his salary if Jerry decides to keep him and we continue to at least win a division and get to the playoffs that is way better in my opinion in my perspective than having another Dave campo like run here...

I know it can land somewhere in the middle but that would be really average everyone calls what we're doing average and is above average when you're truly a top six regular season team that has won its division two out of the last three years that was the number two seed in its conference just last year you're not getting that with the guys you're talking about..

The odds are astronomical that if we make a change and you bring in a guy like Flacco or Mayfield we might win 9 games and most likely not getting into the playoffs and that's the best odds, most likely we win seven games and now we're picking in the top 10 versus the top five you might as well start a raw rookie or someone like Trey Lance or or take a flyer on another young guy or an undrafted guy you gotta go full cheap deal on a quarterback and then when you get into the top five then you have a shot at one of the better quarterbacks.

1) Cross the fingers... like all teams do
2)No team has an alternative just sitting and waiting. In the past 20 yeas... I can think of the Packers (2 times)..... uhm, I am sure there is 1 or possibly 2 not coming to mind, but the days of drafting a qb and etting him sit, while you already have a very good starter? nobody is doing that when that starter is in his 20s. I was really hoping Jerry would just drop down to the JC ranks and find the next Patrick Mahomes. If they were smart, they would tap that market.
3) How many people worth about 15 Billion dollars, are 80 some years old, and have been in the NFL for 36 years give one damn about being blamed for anything. This is th eproblem with those of you taht refused to watch the Jerry SAS interview. If you listened to the actual person speak, you wouldnt have to put your spin on what he is thinking.... because the man actually tells you what he is thinking.
4) I know those feeling have propelled many a team to a SB win....smh

Do you or anyone else actually listen to what Dak and Jerry have said, just in the LAST FEW DAYS? They are in a love fest and no trade will be happening... not a chance, zip, nada, NONE!!!!!!!!!! So why do you insist on talking that garbage... oh, thats right, you like to get in the jabs at "Jethro."

Change 'will' to 'did' and 'is' to 'was' and I am right there with you. Of course, I was first annoyed when the Mad Genius went basically Lone Wolf and acquired Trey Lance nearly 13 months ago.

Best GM in the NFL. [Fill in the blank] years and counting.

/sarcasm
If we do sign Dak, the 2025 1st round pick MUST be a QB. M-U-S-T. Otherwise we'll be right back here in about 2-3 years...with no SB, more "almost-MVP" trophies and a rising cap hit for a choker.

The path of least resistence is to do nothing. Dak is under contract.

Most of the coaches are in the final years of their contracts. Its win big or be fired for them. A new coaching squad will want to bring in their own choice of QB (MM msde a mistake not doing so). Having Dak under long term contract will put off many HC candidates.

I'm going to throw something else out. MM may decide to retire or take a break from coaching. Its very stressful and not family friendly, he's made a ton of money, he'll get media jobs and he and his wife are not from Texas - may want to be closer to friends/family. Dont be surprised if MM goes, even if its a successful season.
you nust be kidding? So you think all new coaching hires get to walk in to Patrick Mahomes under center?
I sur emany of those guys would uch prefer getting hired with Sam Darnold at QB vs Dak.....smh

Signing Dak isn't going to improve Jerry's image, in fact it might tarnish it even further. Everyone knows Jerry will eventually cave, and his habit of being steamrolled by agents has never been a good look.

If he wants to improve his image he stands firm, doesn't cave, and let's Dak try his luck in FA in 2025. Philthy had no problem tossing a QB aside who just a year prior led his team on a super bowl run, so why should Dallas keep holding onto a proven playoff loser?
Trent Dilfer led his team on a SB run........

You’re getting in on tail end of discussion.

It just came up as an opposing argument when fans were saying our intent was to move on from Dak.

And if that was our intent which I seriously doubt then we could have at least pursued receiving some compensation.

and that is just having a whole lot of luck because even Jordan loved last year the first eight games he looked like he could be a bust and things just started clicking for him and we haven't seen him more than just last year so that still be to be determined but you're right look at most rosters nobody truly has a plan B at backup,, what I see is there's about 16 teams that have a problem finding a starter and our fan base thinks it's gonna be easy to find a backup to sit three years and we have a Plan B ready and something we're gonna find is gonna turn out to be better than going to the playoffs 5 out of the last eight years being one of the top six teams in wi....lar season winning the division a lot. being one of the top six teams in win percentage in the regular season winning the division a lot.

So how long should we wait once we get rid of Prescott and how patient is this fan base gonna be when we're truly bad for the next 5 years maybe even 10 looking for a quarterback just to get us back right here in this moment again with no guarantee that we're gonna get past the NFC championship game just wanting something different because you're tired of seeing us lose in the playoffs without thinking it could be much worse.....

we're about to play a team that hasn't won a division since 1986... I can't be wrong but the Cleveland Browns are having problem winning divisions and we're upset that we haven't gotten the NFC championship game in 28 years which I understand and I hope we get past soon but changing quarterbacks most likely doesn't get that done we did it with Romo but between Aikman and Romo remember those years?!

There are literally teens struggling for more than a decade to find a quarterback like Prescott they cannot even find a starter and what do they do they get desperate and they trade a bunch of draft picks and pay a bunch of money to a guy like Wilson Watson and Rogers to try to break this insane QB drought..

doesnt have to be a viable alternative in the roster, if you are planning to draft QB. Dak has 1 year left on his contract and you can be sure if this season is another failure and Dallas in fact takes a step back, nobody is going to care if Dak goes.

The only leverage Dak allegedly has is if some miracle happens and they actually get far in the playoffs off the strength of this guy’s play…All the pressure is on Dak to perform…
so many of you are so damn blind. Do you watch football? Do you pay any attention to how it works with the qb? Kirk Cousins is not as good as Dak and how much money did he get.... coming off a serious injury? and you think Dak on the open market has no leverage? cmon, Man!

and what makes you think Dak would have ever agreed to be traded to some bottom dweller vs playing for a very talented roster like Dallas has and then choosing where he wants to go?

Dak is not capable of taking the Cowboys past the playoffs into the big game. Why do I say that? Because he has proven to us year after year , that he is not! If Trey Lance is not the QB that can take us into the big game at least he is cheaper than an overpriced stats monster.
