Why did Cleveland release him? I watched the Cleveland vs Washington game and those two Cleveland QB's stunk.......

LOL, .. good point.

No matter what you think of Weeden, .. the Browns are in trouble at QB, at least for now.

Because Hoyer is better than him. And you're trying to develop a 30+ year old QB which likely won't work. I think at this point the game just moves too fast for Manziel and he needs to ride the bench for a year. People forget he only played 2 years of college ball.

Browns cut QBs Weeden, Campbell
Updated: March 12, 2014, 8:42 PM ET

The Cleveland Browns have released quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell, the team announced Wednesday.

"First and foremost, the Browns would like to thank Brandon and his agent for being true professionals," general manager Ray Farmer said in a statement. "The circumstances in which he found himself were not easy for him or the team. After discussions with Brandon and his agent, we'd like to give him the ability to pursue other opportunities."

Weeden was a surprise first-round pick by Mike Holmgren in the 2012 draft. Holmgren was so eager to find a quarterback he took Weeden in the first round at the age of 28, figuring if he got five years from him it was more than he'd gotten from many other players.

However, although he has a strong arm, Weeden possesses little mobility and a tendency to focus on one receiver when pressured. He also was caught in a maelstrom of negativity in Cleveland that included changes in ownership, front office and (twice) coaching staffs.

Weeden started immediately as a rookie, replacing Colt McCoy, and had a horrible first game (four interceptions, 34 percent completion rate). But Weeden bounced back to throw for nine touchdowns against six interceptions over the next seven games.

He regressed the rest of his rookie season and appeared headed out of Cleveland when Rob Chudzinski replaced Pat Shurmur as coach. But the team could find no better quarterback options and gave him the starting job in 2013.

Weeden knew the front office did not back him fully, but he had a desire to prove himself. It didn't go well -- he played in eight games, completed just 52.8 percent of his passes and lost all five of his starts.

He also became a lightning rod for fans frustrated with his play and the Browns' struggles.

Google is your friend.

Because they are the Browns...LOL

Best guess, they just thought it was time to move on, go a different direction. Good or bad, we will see.

Tread lightly, a lot of people around these parts love that Johnny Football character.

Hoyer has looked much better than that before. Some forget he's coming off ACL surgery.
The team did go 3-0 with him at the helm. 1-12 without him. That's radically dramatic.

Also, I think highly drafted QBs that have not been real successful are often the first to go when a new regime comes in. Fair or not, that player represents the old to both the fans and new coaches.

Coming to Dallas was good for Weeden, as long as he can sit and develop a little more. Then maybe he can have a decent career as an NFL backup and emergency starter--which is his cap, imo.

Oh, and btw, Cleveland just named Hoyer their week 1 starter.

Weeden was awful last year. He looked lost. He looked good in the pre-season last year and then the regular season started.

Took about 5 sacks per game and completed 52% of his passes.

Looks like they cut him because he's not all that good.

My sense is they cut him because he sucked and at age 30 they knew he'll never get appreciably better.

They drafted a 28 year old Weedon and cut him a scant two years later because they are the Browns.

It's the Browns...who knows why they do the things they do? It's like trying to understand the behavior of dark energy in the the universe. You can't.

This. Even if he played better for them, I don't know if drafting a 28 year old QB in the 1st round was a good investment.

i think that is a big part of why they rushed him into play and really did'nt develope him. he was not ready to start in the nfl with a poor team and they threw him in and thats the results you get. it's one thing to start a rookie who is very polished or one on a decent team so he does'nt have to carry them. it's a totally different thing to take a inexperienced player on a poor offense and throw him out there. and at 28 he was too old to set for a year and develope.
he has some skills and could develope into a nice backup qb but he is far from a finished product and won't be till he is 30. he should never have been a 1st rnd pick because of that

For a team ready to win a 28 year old rookie might work but for a struggling team that was silly.

Weeden was released largely because you pay 1st rounders a lot of money come year 3-4-5 and he wasn't worth that to them as a 2nd or 3rd option.

A lot like us moving on from Felix or Jenkins. Marginal NFLers that were first round misses usually change teams.
