Why did Cleveland release Weeden?

For a team ready to win a 28 year old rookie might work but for a struggling team that was silly.

Weeden was released largely because you pay 1st rounders a lot of money come year 3-4-5 and he wasn't worth that to them as a 2nd or 3rd option.

A lot like us moving on from Felix or Jenkins. Marginal NFLers that were first round misses usually change teams.

I lose track, but didn't the management team that drafted Weeden get changed out? New GMs often don't like to try to salvage the previous GM's draft picks. They like to make their own splash.

Can I just say how much it would suck to be a Browns fan these days? That team has been the embodiment of stupid from their blowing of two first round draft picks to their coaching carousel. And Browns fans are some of the most avid, amazingly loyal fans in the entire league. I feel bad for them because what they've had going on is just an embarrassment.

Why did Cleveland release him? I watched the Cleveland vs Washington game and those two Cleveland QB's stunk.......

Because Cleveland has a 'real GM.' A 'real GM' drafted him in the 1st round and another 'real GM' dumped him after two years, figuring a guy coming off ACL surgery on both knees and another guy who likes to roll dollar bills in mens room would be better. If only we had a 'real GM' ...

The same reason we signed him, he sucks. I said it before ill say it agina, Dallas does not work the back up qb position well. They keep thinking the back up will win them a game or two. This is not the case.

Yea, 3 GMs and coaches in 3 years.

Holmgren actually drafted Weeden and knows a thing or two about QBs.

There is a group of them at the sports bar I watch games at. Very cools guys but I just have to feel bad for them lately in regards to the expensive jerseys Richardson & Weeden I've seen them come in with.

I watched that entire game Monday wondering how much the Browns wished they had a do-over on letting Weeden go.

Brandon Weeden is better than any quarterback that played in that game for both teams.

Took about 5 sacks per game and completed 52% of his passes.

Looks like they cut him because he's not all that good.

Maybe because his OL sucked more than he looked, is 5 sacks a game all the QB's fuault, and that would cut down on production. Not defending him, but there are other contributing factors.

That draft alone would have me moving to Cincinnati.

I had the misfortune of living in NE Ohio for a year or two. Truly an awful place to live (apologies to any internet friends who are incarcerated there). But the Indians and Browns fans were refreshingly die-hard (at the time, the Indians were bad and had been for a while). They knew their lot in life and accepted it and cheered anyway.

I hope they put it all together someday. Being in the same division with the Steelers makes them easy to root for, for me, at least.

And how is this different than any other team. Last year we were considerd the team with the best back up QB.
Glad you are an expert in this field, I feel enlightened....not really...

He has a good record in coaching qbs but as far as drafting this is the same guy who said Colt McCoy could save the franchise

Yes. Holmgren left Mid 2012 season and was replanced by Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi, who were replaced by Farmer in December. The Coaching Staff was also replaced. Shurmer was the Head Coach, I believe, when Weeden was drafted and he was soon after replaced by Chudzinski, who was replaced by Pettini. Ownership has also changed. Lerner hired Holmgren, who was then bought out by Haslam.

Basically, he doesn't fit with what the latest, latest Front Office and Coaching Staff want to do. Weeden was never in a situation where he had much of a chance IMO.

They realized he wasn't gonna be their franchise qb. He's getting old. And they wanted to go in a different direction. He still is a good backup IMO.
