Why did we have to trade R. Switzer?

I just wonder if we could have traded Switzer for a 5th round draft choice, because there was still some great talent available.

And I think we need to ask why was Switzer drafted in the 4th round when it was considered a big reach? There was stll some very good talent available at that time as well.

I hope Jihad works out for us, but my guess is you will hear Switzer's name called more in the future.

Can someone give me the download here? He seemed to be developing nicely, we may have had a different vision for him but I see this being the next Danny Amendola situation where he goes on to have a good career in the NFL.
He wouldn't have made the 53. Too many WR's. So rather than cut him, they did the smart thing and traded him.

I don't know, he's faster and a lot younger than Beasley. I'd keep him over TWill. I just think the Raiders wouldn't have traded Ward for either Beasley or TWill.

On the other hand, would the Raiders have cut Jihad and we could have gotten him for free?

Because according to Stephen Jones, Tavon Austin is going to be our super weapon. He's going to be able to do everything. ;)

The Switzer trade was not about acquiring Ward. IMO, it mainly happened because the Cowboys didn’t need Switzer anymore.

Switzer was drafted mainly for his return game skills. But his muff against the rams probably cost us the game and his bad habit of watching punts hit the ground instead of doing a fair catch, cost us tons of field position yards. If the kid doesn’t quickly learn the art of the fair catch, his stint in the NFL will be very short.

With the addition of Tavon Austin and the reshuffling of the receiving corps, Switzer was odd man out. Switzer is second only to the OTA and preseason All Star, Rico Gathers in fan hype without much to back it up.

I'm not sure I agree with your point that he seemed to be developing nicely. There really hasn't been any evidence of that. Coaches and the FO know more about these players than we do so if they unloaded him, they must have good reason to do so. Maybe he was a Dez guy, maybe he didn't have much between his ears or maybe he was a dime a dozen type player. He certainly isn't a top 4 wr on the roster.

Tavon vs Switzer:
Punt return - Switzer
Slot WR - N/A
Gadget guy - Tavon

Tavon fumbles too much on PR, an Switzer had a better return yards average than all but one year of Tavon career. Switzer hasn't had an opportunity to play much slot. Tavon has better acceleration for RB n jet sweeps. Different type players, but I can't say Tavon is if he fumbles at a higher clip.

Jihad Ward is a wait n see guy. Maybe a sprinkle of Marinelli magic can bring him to life, but where does he lineup? Poor play at OAK, an position identity at DAL...not really a good combo here.

Our FO needed some practice with trades, so they figured on trying it with two sub par players to see how this trade stuff works out.

All the receivers last year sucked. They couldn' get open dropped too may passes. Too many injuries and they all lost a step.

And this guy couldn't even get on the field

I've read different things on Switzer. One he had an attitude. That shouldn't be a prime reason to trade a player, after all we kept Dez around several years. A different situation than Amendola. Amendola didn't play an NFL game while he was a Cowboy. Switzer did. I think the coaches knew exactly what they had in Switzer but there was something there (attitude, ability, lack of flexibility) that prevented them from going forward. They saw an opportunity to make a move and took it. We haven't done that often enough, we tend to stick with guys too long IMO

lol, defensive tacklkes with 30 tackles and 1 sack in two years are a dime a dozen as well.

Let’s not pretend Ward hasn’t been a complete disappointment so far, he’s far from a sure thing.
Oh he is. But I'd like to think his potential is more than 30 tackles and a sack in two years.

Yeah but baddie defensive tackles are a dime a dozen!
Ok and bad slot receivers are too. Both are too young to tell what you have in either player. If they both reach their potential give me a DT over a slot. Especially since we have Beasley.

Seems like this organization wanted a speed back or a dual threat guy like Tavon Austin and when the guy they wanted got picked they saw Switzer and felt he could have a role like that on this team.

It's pretty simple really

1. He wasn't quick enough to be effective running the jet sweep
2. After a year it was clear he wasn't going to beat out Cole Beasley
3. He wasn't that good returning punts
4. We had a surplus in the WR position and a deficit at DT
5. Coaches likely thought he was a bit of a ****** (this one i'm speculating)

I read he didnt fit their skill set requirements.

Then why waste a fourth round pick on him? Evaluating a players skill set to fit your system is easier to do then to evaluate whether they will take the next step with their potential. And you can’t judge potential after just one year.

I think they just like Ward along with already having multiple players with the same skill set as Switz.
