Why did we have to trade R. Switzer?

lol - so you are admitting that your comment about many of our offensive draft picks rotting on the bench was wrong, and you are somehow saying that makes your point right? lol - that's an interesting take.

As for Switzer not developing much last year, I'm not disagreeing with that, I'm just saying that your characterization of the team not giving him a chance and having him rot on the bench like many of the Cowboys offensive draft picks was off base.

Where did I admit I was wrong? I think you took my meaning as in draft picks from LAST year. I am talking about draft picks from over the years rotting on the bench. Like the last 3 TE's we drafted in the 2nd round.

What is the point of drafting these guys if you dont have a defined role for them?

And as far as Switzer he had zero receptions last year. He was used sparingly on endarounds. What do you call that? I call it a waste.

Of course he would be signed by another team, it just may be at less money than he is currently making. Maybe it's fair to say he isn't worthy of being a #2 WR, but it's not remotely fair to say he isn't worthy of playing in the NFL at all.

Amazing because many said that Dez would be gobbled up and would come back to haunt us. The guy cant even find a job. And if Dez cant find a job then Twill definitely wont. He cant even beat single coverage with any consistency. Twill is a terrible #2 receiver. Why is he still on the team. In my opinion he is complete garbage.

Can someone give me the download here? He seemed to be developing nicely, we may have had a different vision for him but I see this being the next Danny Amendola situation where he goes on to have a good career in the NFL.
Did you want them to try and trade a player with no value? The Raiders specifically called about Switzer and offered us a player who we liked at a position of need. The team probably would have cut Switzer anyway, at least we got a decent player in exchange.

I read he didnt fit their skill set requirements.

 This same FO and coaching staff drafted him after evaluating "his skill set" just 1 year back. Are you saying they're incompetent?

These phrases like "didn't fit the skill set" are just excuses you guys come up with that have zero basis in fact

First Joe I would like agree with what you’re saying about armchair GM’s, coaches and scouts. It’s just not what we do for a living and we also don’t have all the tools available to us to make the decisions that the professionals do.

But after calling them out, you turned right around and did exactly what you were calling people out for.......

:laugh::muttley:
I don't present my opinion as fact, I present my opinion as my opinon. You don't see the difference?

Switzer didn't have 0 catches last season

I said you were wrong about the Cowboys letting many of their offensive draft picks rot on the bench by pointing out that almost all their offensive players that get time on the field were draft picks, and you said "Exactly". Maybe you meant something else?

And no, clearly I wasn't taking your meaning as just draft picks from last year, because when I pointed out almost every offensive player that starts or gets significant playing time was drafted by the Cowboys that includes a 2003 draft pick, that covers players drafted over a lot of years. In any case, who are all these players that the Cowboys have let rot on the bench over the years that never got a chance?

As for drafting players without having a defined role for them, it's not uncommon for roles to develop and evolve after they get to the NFL. That's especially true with players that are undersized, and players that don't yet have a starting position to step into. Edleman, for example, barely saw the field for a few years, and his role eventually developed into what it is now.

So what's your opinion on Beasley then since Williams had more catches and yards

I don't know, he's faster and a lot younger than Beasley. I'd keep him over TWill. I just think the Raiders wouldn't have traded Ward for either Beasley or TWill.

The Raiders asked for Switzer, it wasn't like Twill our Beasley, or anyone else was asked for, or offered.
Biassacia left here, and is the Raiders ST's coach, so he probably started this to get Switzer, as we did not need him once the Austin trade came along.
They did not need Ward, and we needed a DT. The Raiders were changing some schemes on their defense, and Ward did not fit into that plan, as they drafted players that did.

how many slot WRs do we want? with Hurns, Gallop, Williams, Switzer, Beasley, Austin, Thompson, etc....there is room for about 5 at most, 6 WRs. so choose 2 between Beasley, Austin and Switzer? Austin is much faster, more accomplished and can do more than Switzer....so a trade to help shore up the DL.....

Is it uncommon for teams to draft players in the 2nd round without a defined role for them? And then do it 3 times?

Then those teams are probably the ones wallowing in mediocrity like we are.

Now for a 4th round pick like Switzer its a little more understandable. But they clearly had him pegged his first year for special teams play and end arounds ONLY. Short sighted as far as I was concerned. They could have done so much more with the kid. And from what we have now seen the receiving corps was nothing to crow about. Switzer probably had the most speed as anyone.

If Twill was cut he would NOT be signed by another team. Im still blown away that we resigned him.
Come on Roy.
He most certainly would be signed elsewhere.
All you have to do is look at depth charts around the league. He's, fairly durable, and has averaged almost 700 yards per year in his career and his drop rate is low; sure someone would pick him up. He'd take a pay cut though.

The faster guy who's literally done nothing to warrant a following. Switzter would not make this team, its good that we got something out of him instead of just cutting him. Also btw, Beasly runs a faster 40 than him, and he jumps higher. So is Switzer really that much more athletic? Didn't seem like it when he was getting stuffed on those jet sweeps.

Switzer has only been here 1 year. Beasley has only had one good year here. And what are you going by with the 40? Are you using Beasley's scouting report out of college where it says he ran a 4.49 as opposed to Ryan's 4.52? Do you honestly think Cole Beasley still runs at that pace? Don't get me wrong, I don't think Switzer is some fireball out there, but he's faster than today's Beasley. I could be wrong and Ryan could turn out to be yesterday's garbage. I can also understand why people would prefer the proven vet over the unproven. I would have kept the younger, faster guy. Cole Beasley at his best is not making or breaking this team and he's only getting older and slower.

Cowboys aren't winning a SB this year. If we make a run in 2-3 years from now Beasley isn't going to be part of it. We don't know how Ryan would have developed by that time, but we do know he still would be in his prime along with Gallup.

Not sure they valued Austin more than Switzer, but with the chance to have Austin for peanuts to start Beasley, and then trade Switzer for Ward....easy to see why they did it.
But it's not like they traded Switzer for Austin. It was the whole combined picture that made it happen.

I see no reason whatsoever why someone would sign him. I see nothing he does well. Now if you want to argue that someone would take a veteran minimum flyer on him well then whatever. Who cares about that? The point really is that the guy doesnt belong on the team. If he is your #2 receiver you are hurting badly at the position. Which apparently we were. As many had said for years now.

Whats the point of you defending Twill? That would be loyalty to a fault.

I agree with the bold. I have already said I don't believe the raiders would have traded Ward for Beasley. I'm also fine with the trade for the reasons you've mentioned. I just got sidetracked by the comparisons.

FYI........if you recall......Beasley also rotted on the bench here until Linehan arrived. Heck Demarco Murray rotted on the bench his rookie year until injuries forced Garretts hand. If you recall Teshard Choice was the starting back in front of Murray. We have seen year after year Garretts misuse of skill position players on this team.

I was just being honest, nothing more.
I don't have an interest in TWill one way or the other. Just saying he'd for sure be picked up , nothing more. I'm emotionless on the topic.

I actually think that if we trade a WR, he's the most likely candidate. His stats are as good or better than most WR2s around the league. So adding him as depth might make sense for some team. The problem with a trade is the team trading also gets the contract. It's not huge, but maybe still an issue.

Stats are as good or better then most #2's? You cant be serious. How many #2 guys have zero TD's? In 2016 Dez was out for 6 games so he was the defacto #1 guy then and he still couldnt break 1000 yards.

Why would anyone trade for Twill? You have a much higher opinion of him then I do. I see him as completely useless. I dont see how anyone would even sign him. IMHO

Yeah, if you mean TDs in 2017. Obviously, the whole passing game sucked and 0 TDs is terrible.
I was referring to his career so far on average (672 yards/year)
But yes, his average year over his career is WR2 numbers. Doesn't mean I like them, but that is how it is.
Now, just because I said he would get picked up by someone, you have me defending TWill like I'm a fan.
That wasn't the point. Just saying.. yes, of course a team would pick him up.
He's 28

Just an example. Mohamed Sanu is considered one of the better WR2s, yet Williams, on average, has better numbers. I like Sanu better, but just saying.
