Why do our fans laugh at the Giants' philosophy?

Im not saying free agency is the way to win and I havent cried much today (because I expected this, though Lamar woudve been nice), but free agency has treated the Broncos pretty well in the last 3 years (and theyve got a lot more than Ware so spare me the Ware rants, I was down for the decision to let him leave).

The Giants are smart this year. You don't get a trophy for having the most amount of unused cap space.

They had a problem on the OL with injuries and a rookie starting at LT, not nearly enough talent on the DL with Selvie starting, mediocre LB's, and losing multiple safeties for the year in training camp.

Still they were 7th in passing yards per game and 8th in points allowed.

So what do they do? Go get the best pass rusher in FA who also plays elite run defense, a 350pound lane clogging monster, and they're upgrading the strong side from Selvie to JPP. They also sign a talented corner that forces turnovers.

Their objective was clear, improve the ratio in passing efficiency, a leading correlation in winning % while also forcing more TO's, another leasing indicator in winning %.

By upgrading the DL to force sacks/turnovers and stop the run, while adding another corner that can play man to man or zone, and create turnovers as well, it's hard to imagine they didn't do exactly what they set out to do.

I just speak the truth man. Not hating on the Cowboys today, I think there are many ways to assemble a good team. With that said though if we landed vernon and Jenkins this board wold be flooded with super bowl talk.

It would. Because message boards are prone to emotional overreaction.

I love Vernon as a player. I hate that the Giants got him. But they paid a giant premium for him. It's more than I'd have been comfortable with, for sure. The size of the contract makes the signing a bad bet.

For sure. But that all comes with a cost. We could have done the same if we were less concerned with the ability to extend young players already on the roster. The premium you pay the first week of FA is yours for the duration of the contract. That's ok if you hit on the premium players you sign, but it's brutal if you miss.

They have the highest paid DE and the second highest paid CB. Those are both good players, but they're being paid as great players. They'll help and the team needed to spend. Don't know how much though because the majority of free agents simply don't work out as team's ask guys to go in and do things they're not equipped to do.

Pretty much what I was going to say

To put it bluntly, the Giants were able to spend this much because they sucked at drafting and are pretty talent devoid.

Just wondering, but have any of our FAs been getting much attention? How many teams are flying Claiborne in for a visit? How about Hardy? We could have had Jenkins in the second round of that draft and still picked our own first rounder, had we not selected Claiborne.........

Since we need pass rush, would you have forked up that contract for that player? Honestly, I haven't much about him. I would think he would have had more production with some of the guys he played with on the Miami defensive line.

I would have considered it. Right now our dline looks very weak. Every team in the league takes risks and overspends time to time. It's the nature of the business. The Cowboys are trying to run the Packers model without their elite scouting department.

If the Cowboys had a rookie head coach and threw all the money at four free agents this place would be in full melt down mode from the current Gmen nipple tweekers.

It might pan out but pretending these additions with gel instantly under new coaching is a bit of a reach. People were saying similar things about the Eagles last year.

This team needs one of everything, there's no reason they cant land two GOOD free agents from what's available and try to fill other needs in the draft. Sign a WR and safety for example, then draft DL, LB, RB, CB, RT,,,

Well then allow me to "hate" (speak truthfully) on them. They are woefully mismanaged and just wing it year by year hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Anyone expecting some brilliant plan to be in place isn't living in reality.

This is the Dallas Cowboys of today. The one you long for is dead. They don't exist anymore.

Well youre not wrong. I'm not sure how right you are, but you're not wrong. There is no free agency plan for this team. The only strategy is don't screw up the future cap numbers. I'm sure our plan is to land about 4 guys along the lines of chris long, Matt moore, and bruce carter. Get Scandrick, romo, etc healthy and then win the draft. It's not the worst strategy in the world. It's one I would prefer when our qb wasn't on his last leg, but a strategy none the less.

I agree completely. Love the players they have brought in, hate the contracts. These are the moves that bring a super bowl or bust type of pressure to the organization. These are the moves you better be right on. If they end up 8-8 these are the moves that people lose jobs over.

Yep. And if they hit on everybody, the premium they paid is not too bad. But if they miss, it's expensive.

Safer to extend guys you already know fit your system.

That said, I'd have paid a premium for Vernon bc that's a risk worth taking. Maybe not the premium the Giants paid, but close.

Cowboys issues notwithstanding, I'm hoping Gettleman turns out to be their Jimmy.

Don't kid yourselves. The same people that are whining in this thread would be the first ones with pitchforks out saying that only Jerry would be dumb enough to pay Vernon JJ Watt money. Guaran-freaking-teed.

Since it was Reese and not Jerry, suddenly, he's a genius.

The 2015 Broncos, 2014 Patriots, and the 2013 Seahawks beg to differ.

Not really. They cherry picked and did it well. Except for the Broncos, I guess.

The goal is to outperform the market. If you can do it in the draft the way the SEA or GB does, great. If you can get a deal in FA the way SEA did with Avril and Bennet, or the Cowboys did last year with Hardy, that's great, too. But you have to avoid bad deals. There are a lot more examples of teams getting bitten by those than there are of teams hitting jackpots on good ones.

When we signed Hardy last year and got Gregory in the draft I thought we solved our defensive line problems. I think Giants fans think that way right now. Time will tell, but I don't think it is going to make them an elite defense.
