Why do our fans laugh at the Giants' philosophy?

Denver side - I grant you them as an example - the only stud signed by either the Seahawks and Pats was Revis, and he is not the CB he used to be, either. The Hawks and Pats did exactly what Dallas gas done the last several ears. They've cherry-picked mid-line to upper mid-line FAs and filled needs.

Meanwhile, teams who have broken the bank over the last 20 years have crashed and burned (Philly and Washington come to mind).

Revis turned that defense around and was named all pro. Bennett and Avril are top flight pass rushers, I'm not saying break the bank but I really think that Miller would gave this offense home run ability out of the backfield so I was disappointed that we didn't match houston offer.

We signed the 2 down DT for 4.5 mill a year and he won't add close to what Miller would have running and catching for 2 mill more. I'm not saying the DT can't play but we are underestimatin what a dynamic back could do behind this line with a top flight QB and wr.

The Giants have their key parts in place already. They might be over spending. But, they are spending on needs. They are adding only the pieces they were weak at. As bad as they were, there offense played well enough to almost out them in the playoffs. They know they have to bolster the defense and they are doing that.

They were 58m under the cap!!!!!!!!!!!

They had to spend it somewhere. That is what we are heading towards with our austerity budgets.

They are still 26m under the cap. That is more than we will spend on our whole class.

JAX can't give their cap space away and they have a solid young team now.

The reason to be skeptical of the Giants moves is that teams that make this many big moves rarely have it show major dividends. Look at the deals. Vernon is closer as a player, currently, to Greg Ellis then he is to the guy he got paid like JJ Watt or Von Miller. Jenkins is a good corner but he got paid like an elite corner. Their DT is a good player who once again got paid like a great one. Yes their team is undeniably better then it was before FA started, but have they gone from being a terrible defense to being elite or have they just gotten to somewhere near average? They haven't fixed the OLine yet. Last year the contract that the Fins gave Suh was insane, but at least Suh is a game changing talent.

As for us and what fiscal responsibility can do for us is simple, it can allow us to resign multiple probowl players without having to cut people in the future. We have three OLine to resign in the next two calendar years, along with a young DE it looks like. Paying your own, if you have them, seems to be a much better method then getting players that other teams have decided just aren't good enough for what they cost. No one should know more about your players then you do.

How does it work if they don't go over the floor? They just take the money and apportion it out to the roster for that year or years right?

They have a lot of leverage because of purchasing power and sure teams who want to leave no stone unturned should try to use it all but if a team doesn't the result isn't punitive really. The owners make the same amount of money either way.

Correct, they just spread it out over the current roster.

But it is 'cash spent', not necessarily cap space.

The Giants committed 200m to FAs on Day One and with the signing bonuses alone they will push over the 89% threshold. DAL is actually fairly close to the spending floor for the 2013-2016 period. Right now I think it is just OAK and JAX.

86 players signed as FAs last year. 2 made the pro bowl. Some people in this thread need to chill on Dallas' FO is not doing anything or are not being smart in their approach to FAs.

Well then allow me to "hate" (speak truthfully) on them. They are woefully mismanaged and just wing it year by year hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Anyone expecting some brilliant plan to be in place isn't living in reality.

This is the Dallas Cowboys of today. The one you long for is dead. They don't exist anymore.

Risen Star, this is my mental picture of you when you rant about the current Cowboys team/ownership... it makes me laugh... I don't know how old you are but this
is Randy Quaid's character in Major League... I do hope you appreciate the comparison.... and sometimes.........

While your general message is reasonable, I don't think using Pro Bowls as a barometer is as strong as you think it is.

Agreed. Really just saying FAs are not always worth it which I believe the majority of us understand. Every year we see threads filled with panic because Dallas is not signing tier 1 FAs.

Well usually, we can't. That makes the discussion moot.

FA don't have to be Pro Bowlers. They just need to be better than what they had. The costs are just a different way too keep score.

Using 3- 1st round picks on the OL is a very high cost to pay as well.

Of course not. But I am talking about the people complaining Dallas is not signing FAs on day 1 which essentially means big money with very high expectations.

I typically don't get worried when a team spends a lot of money in free agency. Sure it could work out and it may very well for the Giants. Although, more likely than not it doesn't work out and you vastly overpay for production that is never matched again with their new team.

What worries me is when a team has a homerun draft and follows it up with either another home run draft or a very good draft. The Giants don't appear to have a home run draft last year and the Eagles certainly didn't. Although it appears the Commanders had a home run draft in addition to a good offseason last year. With a new personal guy there, they will catch my attention real quick if they follow it up with another good draft this year. This division is wide open to whoever can figure out how to draft consistently well.

If you think about it....
Back after theteam of the 90's was done.
Jerry spent to bring in free agents and hit the CAP limit looking for the one more Super Bowl. Signing their own players on the roster a second thought.
Now the Giants on the other hand back then signed their own players as their first thought. Free agents were brought in to shore up selective positions.
.
.
.
Fast forward to this year - Maybe the Giants being a few years removed from their last Super Bowl are trying to get bat to the Super Bowl fast.
As they are now, IMO, chasing big time free agents.

Just saying.....

They were 60m under the cap.

Would you rather have Vernon and be 45m under the cap OR
Not have Vernon and still be 60m under the cap

One or two overpaid guys won't hurt you
