Why do our fans laugh at the Giants' philosophy?

The Giants are absolutely overpaying for some of these guys. But when you almost set a record with allowing 297.1 yards passing per game, something drastic has to be done. I am fine with whom they have signed. Not happy with the numbers but it was necessary. And hey, they still have $26million to play with. Giving this defense to Spags should be interesting.

You could argue that with the exception of two seasons (2007-2008), Steve Spagnuolo has been a bottom tier defensive coach. While they signed big names, I'm not sure that they made themselves anything more than middle of the road defensively.

When we signed Hardy last year and got Gregory in the draft I thought we solved our defensive line problems. I think Giants fans think that way right now. Time will tell, but I don't think it is going to make them an elite defense.

Say we get Elliott or Henry (maybe even with McFadden), in any round, with our O-line we will still destroy their FAs they signed to their D-line.

Pretty much what I was going to say

To put it bluntly, the Giants were able to spend this much because they sucked at drafting and are pretty talent devoid.

Yep and they still have major holes at linebacker and offensive line.

Is that all that different than us signing Greg Hardy and DMC last season? That level of player acquisition is pretty much par for the course in the NFL. The difference being their teams won where ours slumped.

The difference is also in the coaching, Kubiak, Carroll, Belecheat (lol). I think that is our main issue, coaching.

Udfas are part of the same draft analysis though. Same scouts, same player rankings. Same data wherever available. Why exclude the results of all that work just because there are only 7 rounds in a draft?

And even if we do exclude the udfas, any idea how we stack up league-wide in terms of the picks we make in the seven rounds in the Garrett era? It's not enough to say we should just hit on more picks.

4-12 without Romo and our present holes on the team (both starters and depth) shows we don't hit on those picks after RD 1. UDFAs are a convenient excuse for poor drafting in rounds 2-7.

When they are the ones who have won 2 super bowls the last decade? Where does the hubris come from? 2014? lol

One team in the division is going all out to win a Super Bowl for their aging quarterback. I don't want to hear about "Romo friendly" anymore. I don't want to hear about the "Romo/Witten window". The franchise's non-actions today show they are not desperate to win for these two.

Giants just spent $105M in guaranteed money. They spent $85.1M in guaranteed money for FAs the last 5 seasons.

What they are doing now is not what they have done in the past.

Not necessarily. There are lots of reasons why teams lose. And while won/loss is all that matters for playoff seeding, it's not necessarily the only way you measure the depth of an NFL roster.

Where's our depth outside of the OL?

That may be. I know it's the popular opinion around here.

I'll always argue that the real place good coaching shows up is not on game day. If the drafting and the roster does not improve over time, you've got a problem. I believed it's been getting steadily better since 2010, but last year definitely throws that into question. We lost good players in FA, and it's hard to look at the performance on the field and say we replaced a lot of them. Now, having Tony out is a big party of why it looked that way, but I still expected other players to be able to step up more than they did. Especially on defense.

If they signed JJ Watt I would be nervous. But they signed a guy for close to the same money who doesn't even get as many sacks in one year compared to 4 games for Watt. I'm not too concerned about the Giants.

So you are Jerry. What would have you done in FA this year?
And Tyrone Smith is smiling also.

Reckless spending
New York Giants: The Giants, who had the worst defense in football last season, dramatically improved themselves after shelling out more than $200 million to sign Vernon, Jenkins and Harrison. But as we've seen time and time again, there's often little correlation between winning free agency and winning games on the field.

The truth is, Vernon is far from the best defensive end in football and Jenkins isn't the second-best cornerback. Pro Football Focus, in fact, ranks Jenkins as the 25th-best corner in the league.

It's seldom wise long-term to pay players dramatically more than what they're worth. The Giants may experience some immediate gains with Vernon, Jenkins and Harrison now added to their defense, but there's a good possibility they'll regret these signings a couple of years from now.

Cowboy FANS laugh at every team that's been more successful than the Cowboys the past 2 decades because they're in denial about their own team.

I give them credit along with the eagles for trying to right there wrongs and in there eyes improve there team. Us on the other hand sign our problems to a 2-3 yr contract extension and when things dont work out we hear the excuses or the "WHAT IF's"!!!

They only did this because their "solid" GM has to make the playoffs or he'll get fired since he's failed to make the playoffs for 4 consecutive seasons. Their record against this joke of a team during that stretch, 2-6. Their coach has never won a game. You literally posted the exact opposite of reality. Good job.

Is that the same GM that won the last two SB's from the NFC East? I guess I just have higher standards. I think SB's are more important than making the playoffs. :muttley:

At least they were both willing to admit they have made mistakes and needed to make major changes. Jerry hasnt given up yet on his 10 year Jason Garrett blunder.

But it's widely known that he's gone if they don't make the playoffs and you said they have better coaching with a guy who's never coached. You have no idea what you're talking about and are using facts pulled from nowhere to support your argument. Don't do that. It shows your bias.
