Why in the heck would we spend a 4th on a player that won't even make the team?

The Stanbach reach was classic JJ.....JJ The GM scares me a lot without Parcells here. The Parcells era he turned a joke roster into an elite roster. Massive talent upgrade to our 53.

Hey Schmitty, do you have the power to rebuild threads, or are you just a junior mod? If you can, there was a real interesting one earlier today that seems to have disappeared.

Chop...chop, little buddy.

Go back to the board. Go to "Contact us" and ax for Benji.
Benji is the super mod of the board. Tell him this: "The birds fly over Krackow with leaden bandandas." That will let you in and assure you all insider benefits and privileges therein.:)

NOW EVERYBODY GO HOME!!!!!

What ever happened to Skyler Green? Did he get cut or sent to the practice squad?

Skyler Green was a bust, and is riding the pine in Cinci. I'm sure Stanback will be put on IR. That gives the team 12 weeks into the season before they have to make a decision on whether to waive him or not. Since he's been hurt all of camp, & Jones knew of the injury when he drafted him, Stanback will get the benefit of the doubt.

I disagree that a 4th rd. pick is a throwaway pick. Canty & MBIII were both taken in the 4th rd. in 2005. I hate the way this team has used the pick the past two years. They trade down with the Browns to get a high 4th, then take a project like Stanback.

Here are just a few names that were still available at #103 in the 4th rd. of the 2007 draft:
  • Tanard Jackson, CB, Syracuse.
  • Paul Soliai, NT, Utah.
  • Leroy Harris, C, N.C. State.
  • Manual Ramirez, OG, Texas Tech.
  • Allen Barbre, OL, Missouri Southern.
  • Antonio Pittman, RB, Ohio St.
....and that's just some players that were picked in the 4th rd. after Stanback. There were also players taken in the 5th rd. I thought were as good or better than the above:
  • Tarell Brown, CB, Texas.
  • Josh Gattis, FS, Wake Forest.
  • Antonio Johnson, DT, Mississippi St.
  • Michael Coe, CB/FS, 'Bama St.
With his playmaking abilities, and great hands, Josh Gattis would have thrived in the Wade Phillips 3-4. Can you imagine if we would have taken Ramirez over Stanback? We would have the biggest, baddest pair of OGs in the entire league!

that's nice and all - but is this "stanback can't play" or "damn the cowboys for not taking a player i knew about"? *how* can anyone judge stanback right now when he's not had the opportunity to play yet?

not everything has to be done *today* with this team now. we've got an excellent front line and quality reserves. if we were seriously lacking at a given position i could more see your point in "look at other players" - but we don't given the state of this team it's a good time to take a flyer on a player like stanback.

give the guy a chance first.

Thank you. You provided options instead of just stating it was a bad pick. That leads to some good discussion.

There are some good choices you listed. I don't agree with Pittman. He is okay, but running back just was not a need. I definitely don't agree with Tarell Brown. I don't think he is that good and he has off the field issues. The rest could have been good picks, but Dallas chose to go another direction in drafting Stanback. I don't see that as a bad thing, just different.

The 4th round is not a throw away pick. It also is not a must hit pick. You can take some chances on that crazy word potential. The Cowboys did with Stanback. A young wide receiver was not going to play much this year anyway because of TO, Glenn and Crayton. Maybe he will learn the spot and be there for the future.

good points also. i'd say we didn't throw away the pick but invested. we knew going in of the injury and like you say - WR isn't a spot he'd do much *this* year anyway barring a rash of bad luck. so let him learn a new position, let him heal, and let him learn our offense and in the 2nd 1/2 of the year, maybe by then we can get him some reps and see what we've got.

Prediction time.

Stanback will play next week against the Broncos and after his 1st kickoff return a few people will say "we got ourselves a return man!"

Or some variation of that.

I felt bad for him last night. He came out of the tunnel real early and stood there watching everyone get loose. He just stood around for two hours doing nothing. It must be killing him not to be able to play.

Broncos go 3 and out, punt Stanback, takes it for a TD and everyone in here says woot! thats why i loved that pick. Ireland is a freaking Genius. Go stanback!!!

It is also possible that he will struggle at punt returning and people will be calling for his release. I expect him to struggle if put back as the punt returning. It is a special skill that takes time to develop. Even returning kick offs require some development. I am excited to see him back there, but also patient enough to accept if he struggles early.

But nooooooo.

Still disdainful of anyone questioning a pick. So what if anyone questions a pick?
Why is someone's questioning a pick wrong?
In a forum, we toss around ideas and opinions.
And as far as I can recall, no one has suggested the Cowboys do anything "today."
Why do you persist?
Why do you twist things around more than Chubby Checker?

I want you to go to your room/basement and think things over and don't return here until you learn that a forum is an exchange of ideas. (btw: Stanback will do just fine. ;) )
And please name who wants anything done "today.":banghead:

Take your time.

if someone can question the pick, fine. i have no problem with that. question away cause it IS a forum.

many questions get answers and "reactions" - why? it's a FORUM.

if someone wants to question the pick - do it. but it's also my own very right to question why they question the pick.

why?

it's a forum.

your turn to chill spanky. you can't give freedom of speech to 1 side like you're trying to do.
