I think he is adequate. Nothing more.

So from bust that should be cut to adequate in just 39 posts. Nice

I understand the 3-4 fine. I have no problem with the lack of sacks, that's understandable. The lack of tackles though? Sorry I'm not giving him a free pass in this area.
Tackles are a stat.

I am sorry to drop that 411 on you, but you needed to know.

You really don't have critical thinking skills. I'll number out the logic really simply for you.

1) Spears is inadequate because of his tackle stats.
2) Olshansky and Warren have less tackles.
3) Olshansky and Warren are inadequate.

Or are you going to try and flip flop again?

He didn't play the run very well from what I saw, either. He was largely responsible for the meltdown against the Ravens, too.

I think it stems from poor technique. He doesn't really use his hands well...he seems to do too much twisting and get impatient.

His assignment was in the inside gap and he was not the last guy on the end of the line IIRC it was a LBer and few safeties that were out of position. If you played you should have been able to see that unless the ravens called a straight dive the defensive alignment on the field was going to give up something big. The defense had 9 guys inside the shoulders of the Raven's TEs a half way decent down block and a slow cutback like McClains was all that was needed.

Whatever. The numbers don't lie when it comes to Spears. I'll refrain from bouncing back with a personal attack and mischaracterization. We have rules against this type of stuff.

No, actually, unless you are a fantasy football centric moron, the DE numbers for a 3-4 DE DO lie when you compare them to guys in a 4-3.

Too bad we don't have rules against being stupid.

spears is flozell adams like...fat and lazy.

spears is a first round joke....freaking parcells drafting that overrated slob in the first round.

i wonder just how many great players we could have had with that second first round pick.

I didn't say Spears was a stud. He is a solid player and not the JAG you make him out to be.

Do the stats show you how many times he occupied OL for a LBer to make the tackle? You are way to caught up in stats. Quite pathetic..

He actually had 35 tackles. 23 solo, 12 assists.

So...

Igor Olshansky? You think he is better than Spears right? According to his stats. he has 7 less tackles, 1 more sack, 1 less forced fumble, 2 less passes defensed.

Ty Warren? 3 more tackles, 1 more sack, 2 less passes defensed

Trevor Pryce? 8 less tackles, 3.5 more sacks (4.5 total), 1 less forced fumble

THE only LE that was a complete stud last year was Aaron Smith from Pittsburgh...

So enlighten us all and tell us what the threshold is for being good then. I mean his stats compare equally with his peers in the same type of defense, he probably doesn't play as many snaps as they do. So besides the fact that he isn't demarcus ware light in the stats dept. tell us what you expected, Reggie White, Clyde Simmons. So please provide facts that back up your thesis that Spears is a bust. He was the best DE in the 1st round, besides Tuck, Cole, and Canty no other DE in the draft is even close to putting up anything close in numbers and playing time.

I'm talking about the first breakaway run (the McGahee one).

According to Spagnola, Spears had 17 QB pressures. He doesn't play on 3rd down. He's getting penetration and pressure in this one-gap scheme.

Huh?

Look that is what you said and the logical conclusion you can draw based on what you said. I would never make a stupid argument like that but you did. It should point out how flawed your thinking is in this case.

It would be ridiculous to cut Spears right now. Maybe he is a bust when you just base him on being a late first round pick, but he is a solid NFL 3-4 DE. Dallas may lose Canty in the off season. That will already leave Dallas with a hole to fill at the DE spot. None of the current back ups on the team are better than either Spears or Canty. Cutting Spears would do nothing except put Dallas in a bind of having to focus on finding DEs in free agency and the draft.

There is nothing wrong with bringing in someone to compete with Spears or maybe even beat out Spears. Marcus would make a fine back up if he lost out a battle for the starting position, but you don't just cut him. That would be a dumb move. He is cheap because he is still playing off his rookie contract. He is not all-pro and he is not all-bad, either.

How dare you use logic to trump a head in the sand thinking.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself.
