The Saints kept running the same freaking play over and over and over....

FB in the flats.

I still cannot believe how we could not adjust and gave up what seemed like 20 completions to the FB that night.

It was totally pathetic.

Things that will be different this time:

  • The score
  • 3rd down conversions
(the score will be different, we still lose)
(3rd conversion rate wont be too high, dont worry. Brees will have some long plays against us. He wont put himself in 3rd and long, and if he does - no problemo we will use our patented 10-15 yard cushion on WR's)

I agree in part. It is somewhat irrelevant. What I disagree about is the statement about bandwagon fans. There is a very loyal fan base that is always there, win or lose. Then, there is the fringe base that follows them closely but choose to bring out their gear when we are winning. Weaker in loyalty, but close to bandwagoners. But, there is a new base and that IS the never been before fan base that had their lives crushed by Katrina. The Saints run to the NFC Championship game in 2006 gave them a release. The fans in this base are the new generation of Saints fans. They have a special attachment that will be life long. These are not bandwagon fans. They are NEW fans, but I will guarantee they will always remember and always love their Saints.

If you where in the middle of a 8-8 season right now you wouldn't be here... Half your "new fans" dropped of the face of the earth for 2 years only to come back this season like it or not they are bandwagon fans.
They're also the most annoying fans on the planet because they can never be humbled by a bad season because they only care about the team in the good once.
Seeing all these fans act like retards everywhere is why i hate your entire fan base, you have no doubt had a loyal core like every other team but that wasn't even to keep your team in NO on it's own it took a hurricane and a NFL wide pity party and now all of a sudden you're every where demanding respect for being the best fans in the NFL... **** off

Wow, why all the hatred for NO fans?

I dont mind them at all...and when the Saints arent playing the Cowboys, I'm def rooting for them. They've been my "other" team since 2000.

LOL @ "other team". Always nice to have a safety net when you "favorite" team folds. LOL

The thing that bothers me the most is when I call Saint fans bandwagoners..I get the "Cmon, how can you say that about them after what happened to New Orleans"

Who the **** cares about that! Totally irrelevant to what I was saying!

So what do you call the fans that were selling out the Superdome when the Saints had losing seasons in the late 90's?

Saints have one of the most passionate and loyal fan bases in the NFL. Not to mention, the loudest fans when opposing teams come to that dome.

One reason no one is talking about it is that it doesnt have any bearing on this team. These aren't the same Saints of that day, they're better, and we're not the same Cowboys of that day, we're better.

Romo had just a handful of games starting at that point and now he's much better. We had Julius Jones running the ball as the starter then and not the combo of Barber, Choice, and Jones. No Ratliff then. No Spencer. No Jenkins. No Brooking, who I think probably knows a thing or two about playing the Saints. Different coaches all around.

Just not the same two teams coming up to face eachother this weekend.

If that was even remotely true you would have never been in danger of becoming the LA Saints prior to 06

Yup. That is something that many other fan bases do not know. They just assume that losing means no fans. The fans have always been there in large numbers. But, that is why nationally, to those in the know, the Saints have always been recognized as having a passionate, loyal fan base.

That is why there is a 47,000 person waiting list for season tickets.

You need to get your facts straight. That had absolutely nothing to do with fan support. It had everything to do with the owner pulling a power play in the upcoming renegotiation with the State of Louisiana. He was demanding either a new stadium or Superdome upgrades in addition to the financial support. Katrina aftermath and the league office brought a halt to that. Insurance on the Superdome covered all of the requested upgrades, plus. In addition, the league office stated that they would not allow such a move. Had the Saints been without the loyal fan support they might have allowed it to happen. The Saints have had more sellouts over the past 30 years than all but a handful of NFL franchises.

Don't forget that in all of those earlier meetings Payton was no more than a OC who answers to the head coach, and in the case of Dallas, the owner, in game planning. Remember that he had his play calling duties stripped at one point because of difference of opinion with the "powers that be". This is a new fresh case where he is "The Man" and has no one influencing "his" scheme.

Actually, in Dallas, Payton was the assistant head coach, and I seriously doubt he ever talked to Jerry about game planning.

Regardless, Philips beat Payton on two different teams -- two separate "fresh cases."

Okay, you go ahead and hang your hopes on Phillips. I feel a lot safer betting on Payton with all other things being equal.

I'm not hanging my hopes on anything. I harbor no delusions about the Cowboys' chances. I have yet to even offer a prediction about the game because, like most posters on this board, my expectations are at historical lows.

However, this notion that Payton is infallible--the NFL embodiment of coaching and strategic perfection--is absurd. He has weaknesses, and he's been beaten before.

I agree. Take Brees out of that lineup and Payton does not look as great as he does now.

Last season sitting at the bottom of their division at 8-8 Payton was not looking like a guru.

I do think Payton is a fine coach but he has gone through the ups and downs as well.

Of course he has weaknesses. Everyone does. Nobody said he was infallible. But, given the resources he has available, and resources Phillips has at hand, I feel, as most do, that he should come out on top. Past meetings between the two does not in any way dictate what will happen on Saturday. By looking at the past in a vacuum you are kidding yourself. That's not to say the Saints winning is a sure thing, but it surely is a probable thing.

Bingo!!!! We have a winner! That is the point I have been trying to make all along. A coach is only as good as his resources, so you cannot make predictions based solely on the history of the coach. In the past matchups between Phillips and Payton the team with the better players most likely won, regardless of coaching scheme.

Not in Dallas we are not allowed to use injuries as an excuse. :D

Who's "looking at the past in a vacuum?"

We've placed Wade's past successes against Payton in a very specific context of scheming and strategy, not as a predictive indicator of winning and losing.
