Austin is better than any of recievers you listed.

Marshall and Jackson would be sweet. Especially if we got an extra 1st rounder

Just to play devil's advocate, Vincent Jackson is the one guy that would entice me. He's a young, big, physical WR who gets separation. He actually reminds me of Miles a little bit, except you guys have to agree that Jackson is more proven. I know Miles is a great WR, and I'm not demeaning him in any way, but he only has 12 starts in the NFL. I think we should be a little hesitant to sign Austin to a long-term deal. Lets remember Austin also had injury problems before this year, so those shouldn't go ignored either. If a team happened to poison pill us with Austin, I wouldn't be opposed to going out and getting Vincent Jackson for a 1st and a 3rd, and NOBODY else like Marshall or Boldin.

So free agency starts tmr morning and we will be tendering Miles Austin a 1st & 3rd RFA tender which allows him to sign a deal with another team, while we get the right to match. There has been talk that a 1st and a 3rd will likely keep teams away and even if someone signs him to a deal Jerry will just match it.

I'm throwing out what could be a possibility: That someone signs him to a deal with a poison pill in it, something to the effect that he has his entire contract guaranteed if he plays more than 4 games in North Texas. Well that we couldn't match, Jerry would love to keep Austin but won't guarantee the entire contract of what could be a $30+ million deal. In this unfortunate case we would be letting Austin walk for a 1st and a 3rd, both are likely to be higher than our current 1st and 3rd.

But after getting our additional 1st and 3rd what are we to do? Well let's look at the WRs out there on the market right now:

Vincent Jackson RFA 1st & 3rd
Brandon Marshall RFA 1st
Anquan Boldin (probably would take a 1st rounder)
Malcom Floyd RFA 1st & 3rd

These are just the four off the top of my head to name a few. And just a note we'd be keeping the 1st & 3rd from the Austin deal, b/c any tender that goes unmatched is off of the team's original pick. So in the end if we were to sign for example, Vincent Jackson to a deal with a poison pill in it where if he played more than 4 games in the state of California in any single season his entire contract was guaranteed, then that would virtually guarantee us getting a #1 WR to replace Austin and in the end we'd basically have moved up in the draft.

In the end losing Austin may not be as bad as we all think it might be.... Just food for thought.

Jerry would just guarantee the 30 million if he had to.

He isn't going to lose Austin because another owner wants to dbag him with a poison pill.

Great.

Between that and our resident underachiever having his spot guaranteed you must be positively giddy.

One should hope for the best and prepare for the worst. They will not lose Austin. The OP has a good imagination though.

Many teams keep more than 5 WRs. We are the exception to the rule of 6-8 WRs on a team. We are loaded with LBs and DBs. Having said that there is no reason to get upset over drafting another WR. Preparing for life after RW is not unreasonable even if it turns out to be unnecessary.

Of all the players I would want to keep on this team for now and going forward, Austin easily makes the top 5:

Romo
Ware
Austin
Jenkins
your choice for 5th (Ratliff, Witten, Spencer, Felix, etc)

Jackson is proven over what, 2 years? 1 more than Miles & most balls he has caught has been 68, he tore our secondary up last year.. I think that's why you like this guy a lot, but chill man!!!!! Plus Vincent Jackson will be facing a suspension for his 2nd DUI offense, so hold your horses.. Read BELOW, this will wake you up with your infatuation.. lol @ 1st & 3rd

Vincent Jackson pretty much just broke out like Miles, dude had 1,000 yard season last year as well but just take a look at the numbers this season.. it's not even close, Miles beats him across the board in only 12 starts..

Jackson in 15 starts.... 68 receptions, 1167 yards, YAC 3.4, 9 TD's

Miles in 12 starts... 81 receptions, 1320 yards, YAC 6.9, 12 TD's

not even close, sorry.. I don't care how big Jackson is

I knew there would be that one, ignorant person who would totally ignore what I typed and just put on a hissy fit that I actually COMPARED Austin and Jackson. If you go back and read my post, I said, IF A TEAM USES A POISON PILL WITH AUSTIN; did you read that? I said IF. Obviously my first choice is to keep Austin because we took 4 years to develop the guy. IF A TEAM POISON PILLS with Austin, I would have no problem going after Vincent Jackson.

You also have to take into account that the Chargers had absolutely NO running game last season, and Jackson still put up almost 1,200 yards and 9 TD's. Some would argue he's the 2nd option on the team behind Gates. Jackson has an extra 1,100 yard, 7 TD season behind him in 2008 as well. Like I ALSO said in my above post, I'm not trying to demean Austin in any way, he's the real deal and I'm very happy he's a Cowboy. The only reason I'm saying this about Jackson is because you state above that Jackson and Austin are "not even close, sorry." I'm willing to put my homerism for the Cowboys aside, unlike you, and look at the situation objectively.

If the team who gives us their 1st and 3rd round pick is around 12 to 17 I will be ecstatic. I will immediately become a "Draft Rolando McClain *****" again. I will be okay with a WR with our 27th pick. I will be okay with OL in the 2nd and 3rd round. I will pimp Kevin Ogletree or the Drafted WR like a drunken monkey.

But I'd rather keep Miles.

I don't know Hos. Usually I'm right in line with your thinking, we see eye to eye on a lot of things, but this would scare me a bit.

Losing Austin to gain McClain and a rookie WR....eh I don't know that I'd be willing to do that.

There isn't a WR coming out this year that I honestly, at this point, could say that I believe has the potential to do what Austin did last year or better. I mean I know a couple of them, ultimately, will turn out to be great. That is the nature of football but I don't think I'd be willing to lose my 25 year old WR whose already proven he can play for the chance to get McClain and another WR who might prove he can play.

That would be a real tough one for me to get behind. I don't know if I could.

I fully expect to see Austin back in a Cowboys uniform this season and also expect that Dallas will reach a long term deal with Miles before too long.

I can't imagine it will be any other way and I don't think Jerry or Miles can either.

I agree. Someone may make an offer but I fully expect Dallas to match the offer

Don't get me wrong, I want to keep Austin.... that's why he's my avatar. But in the end when you think about worst case scenario, would it be a disaster if we moved up to say 10-15 spots in the draft in the 1st & 3rd rounds while also going from Austin to say Jackson..... I don't think it's be all that bad, I mean my Austin jersey would be useless at that point (I think that's the part that would really upset me).

ok, what if the jets sign him? or the Ravens? then we get a pick in the 20s. it will be tough to replace his production if we don't get another impact WR. most WRs don't do much in their first couple of years in the league and we are in the middle of a push to get to the superbowl, with the window closing in a couple of years (maybe window tightning). he was one reason that our season turned around. he was the most consistent and reliable Wr on the team by a wide margin. remove him and we will fill a huge impact on the team production. recall that before he emerged we were 2-2, struggling offensively against a defensively challenged KC team. then Austin exploded and probably single handedly put the team on his back in that game and turned our season around.

he is not going anywhere. Jerry will make sure of it. after all Jerry bet that he would emerge and let TO go. now you think he is going to let Austin go!!! makes no sense.

Williams and Crayton as this team's starting receivers?

Hello 6-10.

In my opinion, it wouldn't matter if McClain turned Dallas into the best defense in the league, the offense would be anemic enough to shackle them and you'd have 'half a team".

Roy Williams' struggles are bad enough, losing the only real receiving threat on this team would be fatal.

So, you actually believe we are 1 injury away from a 6-10 team?
Panic much?

First, the player has to accept the contract, so they would probably want bank. Second, you are assuming that no other teams are bidding on said players services.

There are no guarantees in your scenario other then we lose a young breakout player that has established a rapport with Romo.

Exactly what I was thinking. He would really have to have some ill feelings toward someone in the org to do this. I don't think he is that kinda guy.
