Why losing Austin MIGHT not be that bad...

Poison Pill essentially guarantees you can get the player unless the original team is crazy enough to match it.

I could be wrong, but I thought the league addressed the poison pill issue. Could Hos or someone explain if they have or not?

There's no salary cap, so I don't see what possible " poison pill " teams can offer that would prevent the other team from matching the offer.

Other than dating the owner's daughter, or grand daughter in some cases..

It's doesn't have to be a poison pill contract, it could be one that is just too expensive for the team to match.

I can't speak for Roy, but I am more relieved than if I escaped old sparky.

Great.

Between that and our resident underachiever having his spot guaranteed you must be positively giddy.

Or he just has the faith that this situation can become a positive one & Roy can produce big for us next season.. I am also keeping the faith, I really want to see a crap load of fans with their tails between their legs next season and not saying a word when it comes to Roy. I believe it can still happen, even if the majority have given up. but this isn't a Roy thread, was just replying to your post

think we need to worry too much about losing Miles anytime soon.

I keep telling people that they need to learn how to read Jerrah's moves beyond of that they are. There's a reason why the Cowboys didn't franchise Miles, instead putting a 1st and 3rd tender on him. That reason is that this is not like any other year in free agency, despite not having a cap.

Jerrah has read the market brilliantly. Teams are not going to be signing many big contracts in this environment. Although I highly doubt there will be a lockout next season ( I believe the situation will be resolved before that happens ) NFL teams, for the most part, are conservative by nature and since they don't know, or can't count, on how sponsorship money is going to be next season, nor the threat of the lockout has been eliminated, they're not going to be going out on a spending spree anytime soon.

Not to mention that it would look pretty bad on their part to cry poverty to the players during the CBA negotations while giving them big contracts at the same time.

If anything, teams will be going the opposite way. Draft picks are going to become more valuable than ever ( I'm no Nostradamus, but I don't forsee many trades in the first couple of rounds in this year's draft ) and teams are going to want to hang on to them more than ever. Especially draft picks in the 3rd - 5th round range because they represent cheap players with little guranteed money that they'd have to pay in case they do lockout.

Now, imo, this market could be a bonanza for the owner, or couple of owners, who have deep pockets and are forward thinkers. They can sign very good players who are still relatively young ( late 20's ) to more friendlier than usual contracts ( since there's not going to be much competition for their services ) and even if they end up eating a portion of their guaranteed money IF there's a lockout eventually, once the games resume, their team(s) would be in better position to win the SB than most.

But, that's just my opinion and I don't know if anybody in the NFL fits that description right now.

Your pretty much spot on.

Rick gosselin was on with norm this morning and he said only 1 or 2 players are going to get big money this spring...and he thought only peppers would and it would be with chicago because they have no draft picks essentially.

Norm asked him about someone signing marshall for a 1 and he said it wont happen. He said he just got back from the combine and he already has 51 wr on the board and there are alot of good ones with multiple abilities..i.e. the return game. He doesnt think anyone needs to give up a pick for a wr because you can get guys that can play in this draft at wr.

He also said this year draft picks are golden and the trading will be down. He went on to say that because there is no cap 30+ aged players are all getting cut because this is the year for teams like the jets and raiders to clean their cap up for the future.

FWIW he also said the draft was very deep at O-D-Line and Corner. Oh and as everyone knows the only player ever to get signed away in rfa for a 1 and a 3 was curtis martin and that was a unique situation.

No problem.

And for the record, I hope all of you guys are right about it.

I'd gladly eat crow if Roy has a great year.

But what I've seen so far has me feeling pessimistic about the whole thing.

And the prospect of losing Austin on top of it would push this fan over the edge.

Let me give you a little advice son...

When you have groomed and developed a young talent such as Miles Austin (25 years old) it would be foolish to just let him go, especially when your QB loves him.

Or it could be what I said, that I don't share the opinion of the populace on Roy Williams.

Just like I didn't on Bradie James, Marcus Spears, Anthony Spencer, and others.

I've opened this thread about 3 or 4 times and want to say something but just can't.

The idea of losing the only playmaker at WR is too stupid to think about.

I definitely hear you, it's hard to see anything positive coming out of it but I just gotta continue to believe b/c I still see the talent in there

bottom line is Romo & Austin have a connection and Jerry isn't going to let anyone come between that connection no matter what.. Sorry but it is just asinine to even have these situations pop into your head, you can forget all about it b/c he isn't going anywhere and Jerry has said since day 1 that his #1 goal is getting Miles a longterm deal & Jerry will get his guy

I'll have to agree with that.

how many receivers had more touchdowns than roy williams?

how can that not be a good thing and a foretelling of good things?

if Romo and He never get better, I will take 7 touchdowns, good blocking, no whining, and not be pissed about it.

If they improve at all, which they should, I might just be happy.

Austin is a proven commodity in our system.

for the life of me I don't know why we continue to sniff up the wrong trees to get at the greener grass tha we thot we spilled as milk under the burning bridge.

We have a superstar in the making, do ya think we should keep him?

I understand you are just trying to drum up some conversation in the off season but the fans around here go into full panic mode when something dreadful might happen. Having said that, if we lose Austin I'll be looking for a poison pill of my own...:D

If somehow the nightmare scenario unfolded where we lost Austin--I strongly believe that will not happen in this market and with Jerry capable of trumping offers--then the extra picks would make things interesting at least....in a morbid sort of way.

If that nightmare it unfolded where we did lose Austin and got an extra 1 and 3 in return, we could do some real damage in the draft as strong as this one is.

If we didn't grab a free agent WR, I could see us going up for Dez Bryant and still loading up in other areas.

It'd be a fun thread to see if we all put together our draft given that we get the 1st and 3rd picks from a team like Cleveland, Buffalo, or Denver. No telling where Bryant will fall (and he's not hte onoly WR out there) but there are great players available in the 2/3 or more of Rd1 this year so he could slide. All of a sudden guys like Okung, Berry, or further down become possible. Or witht he extra 3rd we could move up in the 2nd round and grab a guy like Tate and still have our two 1st rounders to do as we please. I'd be a fun game to play......but I sure would not want to lose Austin to find out for real.
