Why not sign Lawrence to a long term deal?

Most DEs arrive by at least year three. DLaw has had injury issues and went through a suspension. He’s had a couple of back surgeries. He needs to prove it another year. Would hate to see him sign a huge extension only to watch him suffer through an inproductive injury plagued 2018 season.

Lawrence arrived his sophomore year, what's your point? It didnt take him until year three.

NO

-Has been suspended

-Has had back surgery

-Has been injured quite often

-Had a career year in a contract year

Let him prove it again
Yup. This guys got it lol. No way I pay him after one good year. I mean yeah he was productive but the guy has been hurt, has had back surgery, and has been suspended already.

He had one great year in a contract year.
He has a bad back
He was suspended.

There is risk. They are looking for confirmation that last year was no fluke before writing the big checks.

This
Franchise and move on

He followed up an 8 sack season in year two with a suspension and only one sack his 3rd season in 9 games. That’s not what I call arriving. He needs to validate last season with another real good year.

DLaw was having a few issues with his back last year but didn’t miss any time. I need back to back seasons where he’s staying on the field and is consistent before locking him up to a huge extension. I’ve seen too many players come up big during a contract year only to disappoint after signing the big contract.

that is a risk no matter when.

Same people calling for the Cowboys to sign him to a long term deal are the ones who would be calling them idiots if they did that, and he went back to being average or injured.
No I know there is a risk in anything. This kid showed flashes until he got hurt. You can sit there in the what if world all day, I am sure Houston wishes they had done that with a guy that was a picture of health and then he signs his extension and misses 2 season effectively. I would pay him 17AAV now then start at 20AAV next year

I'm sure some people would. Just like I'm sure some of the people calling for DLaw to "prove it" next year will be calling the team idiots if DLaw earns his big contract in 2019 and then goes back to being average or gets injured after. Some can't resist the use of hindsight to prove they are always right.

The key is to find the posters who don't do that.

Does a three year deal with a fat SB seem like a possibility?
He gets the big guaranteed money and may prove to get another big market
deal not so far down the road.

I will defer to the cap specialists on $$$ amounts.

Just doing a thought experiment here...

Why don't we sign Lawrence to a JPP type contract this year?
Why tie up our cap this year for 17 million plus a big contract next year along with a huge sum of more guaranteed money?
JPP signed a 4 year 62 w 40 million guaranteed.
Lawrence is only 24 and his best years are ahead of him, we had him at a very reasonable cost for the past four seasons.
Maybe I'm being naive and it will cost a boat load more than the JPP deal, but I don't like throwing 17 million away on a one year deal which doesn't give the team any benefit of resigning the player.
They did it so people can whine about it next season they will give him a long term deal so people can whine about it

Good agents don't make a lot of noise as they seek the max deals for their clients. They can be tough as he'll to deal with. I suspect Lawrence has just such an agent. Fyi, Zack Martin has a tough agent, too. Neither will be an easy signing.

I'm for him reinforcing what we think he is.

But that doesnt take away what he did his 2nd year.
He arrived his sophomore season.

My favorite are those that deny the use of hindsight right after they are clearly using it.

I remember being in the game day thread on old site and a poster was upset because we passed on 3rd and short. Failed to make it and wanted the team to run. Mad as can be we passed the ball. (that frustrates me too and I know you as well).

Next 3rd and short we ran to the outside. Same poster is mad as can be we ran the ball outside. We need to run up the middle he claims.

Later same game, ran up the middle on 3rd and short and get stuffed. Same poster upset at the play calling because everyone in the building knew we were going to run up the middle and we needed to trick the defense.

Funny stuff man.

I've changed my position on it. I was on the "just tag him" side of the ledger, but I've rethought things.

The deal you need to look at is the 5-year, $85 million deal that Olivier Vernon got from the Giants. That's the benchmark for this one.

He got $50 million guaranteed I believe. But that put him under contract for five years. Going by the tag, the Cowboys have to pay $17 million this year and at least $20 million to do it again. That's two years for almost $40 million, with no guarantee of keeping him after that.

I understand that the back is a risk, but all players come with risk of injury and he's obviously recovered enough to have by far the best season of his career. I think he's an ascending player and I don't see where he could be a flash in the pan. The only thing that could derail him is injury, like any other player.

I'd pay him.

LOL ....now you thinking like the wise one. Heck, he can sit back, collect 10 or more sacks, and watch his value go through the roof. Like you said, within three years, with three tags, he could see near 60M.
