Good post, and add to that the jones boys have been extra bad at it.I mean its not just the Cowboys. 2 years ago 5 teams drafted a QB in round 1 and it looks like the 5th one is the only one who is any good. 3 years ago the Bears decided Mitch was better than Mahomes. Marcus Mariotta and Jaemeis Winston were 1st round picks and before them Paxton Lynch, Johnny Manzeil, Teddy Bridgewater, and Blake Bortals and the year before them it was EJ Manuel.
Basically drafting a QB is hard and the fact that there can be THIS many 1st round failiures is why teams pay big when they even hit an average stater because otherwise you spend draft capitals and years trying to find one.
true but you have to get the right one to fit what you want to do, and it takes a lot of evaluation of college qb's . finding a brady or romo is possible in lower rounds,Many of these QBs drafted aren't good, but I do feel a percentage of these guys would've had far better careers if they had a good system/coach. This leads us to DAL...MM is known as a developer of QBs, so no matter the situation with Dak the Cowboys should be drafting and developing a QB.
This strategy wasn’t acceptable in Dak’s first 4 years for a good portion of our fanbase, including you. Why is saving money on the QB position suddenly going to be OK?Don’t have to draft one better.
Saving 40 million a year could get by with less if it affords a greater supporting cast.
True and thats why I give the KC a lot of credit for spotting mahomes, and they credit willie davis their texas scout.More often than not these big name college qbs flop. Its risky business drafting a qb early. There are teams that haven't had a stud qb since the 90s lol. Miami's last productive qb was Marino, I guess Tannehill deserves mention, but they blew that one. Prior to Josh Allen the Bills had Jim Kelly. If Mayfield hits he will be the Browns first qb since Bernie Kosar. Who was the Jets last good qb an aging Brett Favre? The Bengals had Andy Dalton and before him who, Boomer? Jags had Brunell but since then who? You mentioned the Bears does it really go back as far as McMahon? It feels like Im missing some qbs in between for those franchises, but I cant think who.
Seriously crazy how some teams are perpetually looking for a franchise qb. It is by far the most important and difficult to aquire position in all of professional sports. A guy like Mahomes will have the Chiefs in contention for the next decade.
1. the GMThe real question is why is this team so bad at evaluating college QB's?
Where is the disconnect? Romo was undrafted and a suggestion by Peyton.
Dak was like the 4th or 5th choice and the team tried to trade for a guy who ended up a true loser.
Shoot... Jerry was openly heartbroken he couldn't get the trade for that guy!
What is their problem?
I dont think you read the article amari, they didnt just draft a guy, they knew he was special, and were going to draft him regardless, and then they wanted himHmm.
Let’s take a look at the 2016 Kansas City Chiefs. Alex Smith was the starting QB. At the end of 2016, they’re season came to an end. The Chiefs had a choice. Overpay Smith, or take a shot at the draft. They drafted Mahomes and kept Smith for another year. Smith failed to step up to the plate, hence why he ended up in washington. The same fate should lie with Dak. Tag him and draft a rookie, or just let him go if he decides to hold out. This is getting ridiculous. Is every single Cowboy going to do this holdout stuff? If the rookie is successful? Great, ride with him and let Dak go. We’ll have a cheap rookie QB that can do just as much, if not better than Dak. If the rookie fails, do him like the Cardinals did Rosen. Trade him and try again. We don’t have time to stick with Dak for 6 years. Players will begin to age.
They never really put in the resources. It would be different if Jerry and friends have used 1st round picks on QBs and they bombed. The real question is why is this team so bad at evaluating college QB's?

That's the mental hurdle that is so difficult to get over. Our greatest window to win with Dak was during his Rookie contract.
The biggest unknown is how much authority does MM really have. Many of these QBs drafted aren't good, but I do feel a percentage of these guys would've had far better careers if they had a good system/coach. Because if we over pay him now we won’t be able to sustain the Elite supporting cast around him. This strategy wasn’t acceptable in Dak’s first 4 years for a good portion of our fanbase, including you. Why is saving money on the QB position suddenly going to be OK?
You can win with above average...Above average is not doo doo.
I know the rationale. It’s why people should have been happy with his first 4 years, but you/they weren’t. Why buy into that strategy now when you didn’t buy into it already?Because if we over pay him now we won’t be able to sustain the Elite supporting cast around him.
I’m not sure what you mean. I always thought our best window to win with Dak was during his Rookie contract. Nothing’s changed.I know the rationale. It’s why people should have been happy with his first 4 years, but you/they weren’t. Why buy into that strategy now when you didn’t buy into it already?
Of course, that goes without saying. But you weren’t happy with having Dak as QB. Now you are saying take another cheap QB and build a more talented team. An approach you have already demonstrated you aren’t happy with. Why would you feel it would be acceptable now but not the previous 4 years?I’m not sure what you mean. I always thought our best window to win with Dak was during his Rookie contract. Nothing’s changed.
Sure because it’s a better alternative than over paying one and not being able to continue surrounding him. Basically being stuck .Of course, that goes without saying. But you weren’t happy with having Dak as QB. Now you are saying take another cheap QB and build a more talented team. An approach you have already demonstrated you aren’t happy with.
So money has nothing to do with it? You just don’t want Dak and that’s Ok. Just don’t see why Dak haters try to act like money is an issue here. You’ve hated him from day 1, don't switch now and act like a contact is now factoring in as to why you don’t want him as QB. The contract situation might turn some supporters into haters, but haters didn’t even like Dak at $465k a year. They just need to own that.Sure because it’s a better alternative than over paying one and not being able to continue surrounding him.
At least you have a shot the next QB might produce more or the supporting cast could uplift them more.
We’ve seen what this QB can do with best supporting cast. And we’ve seen what they can do without it which is the more concerning part.
