Why the Jonathan Mingo trade could haunt Dallas in 2025

I expect Mingo to show signs of life in his 3rd year. Let's not forget about the dumpster fire he was drafted in to or the circus he was traded to. Maybe we can see a sense of unity being built in Dallas now with the new hires.
I think we will see Mingo carve out a roll similar to what Noah Brown provided when he got an opportunity to play.
But the scheme will be different for Mingo than what Noah was involved in with us. The Cardinals ran a lot of 12 and 13 personal with heavy run looks and having a big bodied WR who can block is needed.
Especially 13 personnel. it's a run-first package that can involve stretch plays to either side, power calls off tackle, or motioning TEs/WR's as trappers on “wham” designs.
This package can also be used to force defenses into adding more players to the box. Teams can fake the run to one side while having the QB keep it the opposite way or run a play-action concept.
Just a little something to think about...Is Trey Lance better suited for this scheme?

big mike did not want mingo to begin with because he had no use for a wr in a midseason trade. with prescott out by time this trade happened made no sense at all.
Kid is top 40 draft pick.

4.46 speed and big/strong

And 23.

If he bombs in camp, then we can hate.

If so, the season would've been doomed regardless

Horrible trade, BTW

QB Dak Prescott
LB Anthony Hitchens
DL Dorance Armstrong
TEs Jake Ferguson & Dalton Schultz

80s mustache forgot Tony Pollard

It's commonly said that JJ is only good at drafting first rounders. Maybe not?

fourth round is actually my favorite round in the draft.

3rd round
DeMarco Murray - I remember people were foolishly upset about this pick
Terrance Williams
Michael Gallup
McGovern
Osa

Not bad for a guy who is only good in the first round. I would say

If Mingo doesn't get targets and produce, this will haunt the Jones clan all year.

The new league year begins in a few weeks, which means many transactions will occur throughout the NFL. Trades will almost certainly happen. However, one trade in particular the Dallas Cowboys made last season may have lingering effects at the worth possible time.

The trade in question is the Cowboys acquiring Jonathan Mingo at the trade deadline from the Carolina Panthers for a fourth-round pick in this upcoming draft. The trade caught many off guard, likely because the Cowboys aren’t usually active during the deadline. Secondly, the compensation given for Mingo was laughable.

But the Trance trade did not haunt us? Ok.

A 4th for Mingo looked awful the day we made the trade. It’s looks even worse after Washington got Deebo for a 5th.

IMO they just jumped on something they perceived as value. They had a very high grade on him. Me and alot of others here liked him alot coming out too. They didnt put enough into scouting him as a pro player. Under 50% catch percentage, amd didn't improve year 2. I actually think it got worse here.

He is basically their 4th rounder, but they lose two years of control. That and his upside now appeara to be below average #3
The pro scouting here was one of the best in the league around 15 years ago. Not sure what happened, but they’re horrible now.

This is why I don't want Jerry making any trades. His tendency to overpay for players he gets is remarkable and his tendency to accept underpayment for players he trades is even more so.

I don't think the Lance or Mingo trades were particularly bad ideas, but the compensation he sent to other teams to get these two players was way more than they were worth. Lance, for example, may have been the 3rd pick in the draft, but he has been in the league for a while and he failed to beat out Sam Darnold in SF. I would have offered a 6th round pick and walked away if SF didn't take it. SF was going to release him anyway.

The same with Mingo. Not a bad risk taking a chance on Mingo, just not for a 4th round pick.

Still, I would give Mingo a chance. Last season it seemed like every time Mingo was thrown the ball, it was an off target throw. Rush did not do him any favors.
Jerry is the guy that sits down at a poker table and says “boys, we’ll all win tonight if we’re lucky.”

Yeah, but Mingo has a cool name.

All this does is remind us how completely dysfunctional our GM really is . Just think back at all the 2nd round picks that he has wasted on players like jaylon and others that he has picked that were scrubs. It goes on and onand on. Jerry traded a 4th for Lance a couple of years ago. And of course now Mingo for another 4th. Not one of them helped the team.

The good thing is none of us know whether it was a good trade or not, until he gets a good off season and works with our new staff. No lingering bad habits from the lame duckers. Even our resident nostradamus' don't know a dang thing.

What are you talking about. What does Cooks have to do with giving up 4 years of a rookie contract to get 2 year?
The Cowboys are moving on from Cooks and his big deal. So to replace him they get another WR with 2 years left on his rookie deal.

Cowboys save money and cap space this way. Not sure what's so confusing about this.

In Mingo's 8 games here he had 5 receptions on 16 targets. (31% success)

In those 8 games schoon 19 receptions on 24 targets. (79% success)
Mingo came into a new offense with a backup QB. The game he started, Rush threw the ball in the dirt and over his head. That isn't Mingo's fault. Additionally, he is supposed to get Cooks snaps and couldn't do that when Cooks was still on the team.

The Cowboys aren't going to keep four 5th round draft picks.

They aren't going to sit through 74 picks without finding somebody they badly want.

You can expect heavy trading from the Cowboys throughout. They could end up with 15 players, they could end up with as little as 6.

Lots of potential with Mingo too.

Kid was an early 2nd round pick.
