Will Garrett still start Witten if Blake and Dalton outplay him?

So you have already decided that they are better than Witten ........ So yes, to you it will look like Garrett is starting Witten no matter what.
To my eyes Dalton look as good a blocker and Blake looks better at receiver than Witten did on his was out.

Witten put a new standard for TEs here at cowboys, lets see Jarwin try to get near this achievement .
No one is saying Blake is a HOF TE or anywhere near Witten in Witten’s prime what I am saying is Witten is on the back 9 and at this point Blake is better.

Then like I said ..... In your eyes if Witten starts it's because of favoritism.

It has yet to be seen if Witten still has it...... But I am gonna gives future Hall of Famer a chance to prove it before I put in jags.

Go back and watch the tape. Jarwin is a horrible blocker. Good receiver terrible blocker.

yep.......THIS is the part that some people dont understand. Blocking, especially in Garretts horrid offense is just as important. Jarwin gets man handled in the blocking. Just important as any one of the Olineman. IF he blows a block, the play is dead.

And then we will have to hear from the troll how Dak allowed another sack. LOL

When I first heard Jason Witten was coming back. I said he will be a Red Zone threat specialist. After all it was Prescott that threw his first ever playoff touchdown catch he hasn't been that threaten the past because we had the dramatic Bryant. We still haven't found a way to solve this issue.

Written had a year off to get healthy. Sure the young guys are going to shine but Witten has skill and game knowledge the young guys just can’t get without years.

I'm curious to see what the new pickups (Codey McElroy and Marcus Lucas) do this preseason. Can any of our TEs be good at both run blocking, route running and pass catching?
Codey McElroy
UDFA 2018
Draft: 6-6, 250, 4.69 forty

In the Cowboys at 49ers preseason game:
Codey McElroy looked really good as a receiver considering his extreme lack of experience.
- He has absolutely no clue about blocking.

Marcus Lucas
UDFA 2014
Played WR in college
Draft: 6-4, 218, 4.6 forty
Cowboys Roster: 6-4, 250
NFL Games Played: Zero

It remains to be seen. Jarwin has shown he is worthy of being a starter, Dalton has not. In the two TE sets we've seen them play at training camp, it's been Witten and Jarwin getting those snaps. Reports say Witten is doing well enough to be the top TE on the roster. I understand what you are asking is hypothetical but I don't play the "hypothetical game". The best players play. For now, that is Witten as our 1TE and Jarwin a close 2TE. It's a good problem to have.
Schultz is the best blocker of the 3.

And? Maybe the Cowboys should get with modern times and actually want a TE who can go down the field and make plays. The TE position has evolved well past what it used to be. But we are trying to run the 80s and 90s styles of offenses. Do you think the Pats care if Gronk can block? How about Kelce? Nah. They value much more that they can go downfield and create mismatches. Why would you want to crowd the box anyways on run plays? A TE is now another WR who can create mismatches with his size and strength.

We keep wanting all our TEs to be Witten clones when those TEs are being phased out over time.

But if we keep running this style of offense and wanting to crowd the box when we run, I guess it is required they know how to block. Even though it does a disservice to your offense where you are handicapped by that.

So he can be Robin to Jarwin's Batman in the two TE set next season when Witten is retired again.
In the 2nd half of 2018 after Swaim was out, Jarwin was the receiving TE and Schultz was the blocking TE. Rico got snaps if they used 3 TEs.

It's likely that they'll use different combinations of the 3 this season.
Witten/Jarwin
Witten/Schultz
Jarwin/Schultz

Witten
Jarwin
Schultz

I'll start out by saying I think Witten is one of the greatest TEs to ever play but at the end he wasn’t that top level player anymore. I’m starting to think based on the end of last season and this preseason game Blake and Dalton might be better than Witten coming off a year out of football and a year older. We have seen JG show favoritism to vets vs young players in the past Ogletree vs Harris and Beasley so I wonder outside of injury if Blake and Dalton out play Witten will JG still start Witten?
better ask jerry and his boy, they decide who starts with the star players.

Witten will start, he is a better blocker than the other two. I think Blake gets more playing time in obvious passing downs.

I didn't pay enough attention this last game, but I have heard Brodus rave about Schultz and his blocking as of late. Fwiw. I think he was always a good blocker, but he needed NFL strength and he has added it over the offseason apparently.

Just regurgitating some info Ive heard during my many hours of driving listening to anything and everything Cowboys related. Which doesn't necessarily make it true.

I'm not concerned with who starts. I'm more concerned with the reps and Jarwin should get more reps than Witten. If they want to give him the honorary start than that's fine.
