I understand your confusion. Allow me to clarify.

Threads are often created during games. This practice is done even though the game threads' opening posts (and sometimes stickies also) instruct members to not do so.

In an effort to discourage the same thing happening yet again, I made the decision to post this static message within approximately eight threads discussing Dak Prescott, Trey Lance or both. Prescott, and now Trey Lance, are often the subject topic of threads created during games. I thought posting this precautionary message would be more highly seen and adhered to by those members who might have been later compelled to do create such threads based on the same topic.

My post was not directed at your thread for the exact reason you gave. For what it is worth, I *think* my static message worked for the most part, although there is really no sure way of knowing for certain.

My apologies. I hope that clears up any misunderstanding.
Kudos to you. Great admiration when this sort of respectful response shows up to a legitimate question. You don't need my respect, but you do have it nonetheless.

It would only take one of those guys (Dak or Rush) getting hurt. Lance will likely be the emergence QB which is an exempted roster spot.
Both the QB1 AND the QB2 would have to be either injured and not able to return or disqualified because they were ejected before you can bring in the “3rd” QB that is on the 53 man roster, but not on the 48 man game roster. And once that QB3 enters the game QB1 and QB2 may not return.

Speculation on my part, but seems to me we should look for Lance to get some short yardage duty with regularity.

And too, I think this probably makes certain that McKeon makes the team, and will line-up with some regularity as a backfield blocker.

Trey Lance isn't getting any significant action in 2023 unless Dak and Rush are both injured, and he's forced to play. Feel free to bookmark this post.

Daks on a loaded team. If he doesnt have a strong start to the season they'll be thinking of putting TL in by week 5 or 6. Jerry is in win now mode, so is inpatient.

Yes

With the poor QB play from Dak in the last two playoff losses, and the INTs, and the lack of Pro Bowls, and the huge salary…

They’ve decided to pivot to TL.

When will that be?

Likely 2024. But if Dak continues to struggle, maybe sooner.

I’d guess TL is ready by week 8.

Of course, he’s missed all of our camp and off season work.

The good news: he spent two years with that 49ers genius HC.

Before the TL trade, they were locked into Dak and another 200 million contract.

Not now.

They will still pay Dak a max contract.

TL had 2 years with that genius and still looked terrible. What's that say about treys chances of looking decent here? Dude ain't playing anytime soon and for good reason.

Uh, no. He literally couldn’t beat out Grier at this point if it was a fair competition,

its ok to know that Dak hasn't been the answer and to also acknowledge that Lance hasn’t shown any evidence whatsoever that he is the answer either.

And the Jeopardy answer izzzzzzzz...

A primary topic of training camp had been how the Cowboys would deal with short yardage situations, and given new trade arrival Lance's legs, it makes sense to think about the intersection of those two things.

(... an audible "duh" can be heard resonating among the audience... )

*Bzzzz***

What is Trey Lance will get significant snaps in 2023?

Correct!

Alex, I'll take posters who appear to get an ego kick by being frivolously annoying for $100 please. ;)

If Lance does get to play because the other 2 qb's are injured, the Cowboys will be looking to draft a qb because Mr. Lance is not the answer. If he were the answer, SF would have kept him. Face it guys, he did not pan out in SF. It's pretty simple.

49ers don’t need to develop a QB.

At the time, they did.

49ers get the draft pick, and they gain 11 mill in cap.

Dallas gets the QB, lose the pick, and take on the cap hit.

Everyone wins.

Especially Dallas.

According to Jerry Jones comments, I do not expect to see much - if any - game action for Lance this year.

Cowboys fans and the media are making a big deal out of everything about this acquisition for one reason….because it’s the Cowboys….period.

Bottom line is very simple, nothing more —
Jerry and the Cowboys wanted to draft a QB this year in the later rounds, but the guys they considered were gone early, so now they used a future 4th round pick to replace their 3rd string 28 year old QB with a 23 year old 3rd string QB with two years remaining on his rookie contract.

Your 3rd string QB if you even bother with one should be a young player with upside that you hope you may be able to develop. Will Grier was blasted on this site as being awful in the preseason until the final game. Neither he nor Cooper Rush is an appropriate 3rd string QB at this point. If a year from now, we decide to make Lance the #2 QB, then Rush is gone and we will look at another young guy for #3. People are making way too much of this deal. At this point, Lance is a very young #3 whom they will work with this season and the off-season to determine if he can be developed as at least a #2.

Lets also not forget that with the running QBs we will face, Lance will give our defense better work as the scout team QB than anyone we’ve had in years.

Better hope TL works out.

Otherwise, Dak steals another 200 million in cap.

We’ll end up with a scrub OL like Seattle did.

Is it?

The guy got the shortest leash in the modern era of the the NFL.

8 total games with just 4 starts!

And this for a player with little college experience that everyone knew would take time to develop!

Hey Stash, I am hoping the guy does great as I always do for any Cowboy player, but I have not seen it on the field when it comes to Lance. I really do hope I am wrong, but the proof is not out there.......yet.

I do however think that he is an upgrade from Greer even if the upgrade percentage is minimal at this point.

According to Jerry Jones comments
Heard the same thing you did.

My take is that Jerry was being truthful.

My take... now that we know he basically made a point-of-sale purchase like many of us normal people do when we pick up a candy bar standing in line to check out... is that Jerry didn't really think it all through at the time, and he also now doesn't want to set expectations up so that he's held accountable for what productivity Lance supplies to the 2023 season.

My take is that, once McCarthy gets some time with Lance and gets comfortable with him (or not), McCarthy will be the one who determines whether Lance gets any opportunity to contribute in 2023.

My take is that Lance is too good of a rushing asset to not get used. He's not at Lamar Jackson's level as a runner. Yet. That he plausibly could be? Compelling. Too compelling.
