That takes years and a Herschel trade. Typically the same group of teams draft high every year.
Jimmy Johnson could see that even though Herschel Walker was a great player the Cowobys had a lot of needs, so he made the trade. If Jerry had a Herschel type player today he would just make him the highest paid player in the NFL and the Cowboys wouldn't get any better.

This is the worse year.
The thing about 1988 was when they got the 1st pick in the 1989 draft. We knew they would take Troy Aikman.
In 2025 if a top 5 pick and a QB is there. It will not happen.

Does any fan really believe they will take a top QB with their 1st pick?
I do not. That is why it is the worst year.
The key is getting in the top 3 and trading down and still getting a top 3 player. The top 5 players are going to be very good and the draft is deep at 3 positions. Dtackle, edge, and running back.

The hope is to lose them all and move into the top 3. That would put them on their way to turning the ship around. If the football gods are with us.
While I do agree that at this point all is lost but gaining a higher draft slot, just not sure having a top slot in this year's draft would actually do any good.
You use a top 3 pick on a "potential" franchise QB, so trading out of top pick in this year's draft would be a more appropriate action.

Trading down is certainly in play.

Need to solve the QB problem first.

This franchise is in no hurry to spend a top draft pick on a QB.
That is just the reality and gravity of the current status.
They could make a killing in this draft. Just have to see how it turns out.

both years were tank years, but jimmy tanked better!! He got the # 1 overall pick ??
And he quickly built the team into a SB team.

Cowboys might improve , depending on who they draft, and if they do anything good in FA, they will have the cap to do it.

I fear they just sign diva micah, and still nothing in FA.
I don't think Jerry has the knowledge base of NFL personnel to confidently attack free agency which is why we don't. It's definitely not a strategy to focus on signing our own but rather a default.

A lot of teams have cap space and ways of creating more. That's not something that gives us any kind of advantage recruiting free agents to Dallas. What is really killing us are the recent drafts starting in 2021 when we whiffed on the entire draft class except for Micah. 2022 draft was better finding guys like Bland and Ferguson in later rounds but then we whiff on Sam William and Jalen Tolbert in round 2 and 3. Then the 2023 draft whiffing on Mazi in round 1 and Schoon in round 2......ouch. 2023 is looking like Overshown and that's it. You can't replace the lack of depth in free agency created by all these consecutive bad drafts.

Any way you slice it, it is good to be in the top 3 in the draft and have 100 million in cap space.

I think Sheduer and Dieon could happen if we are in position to take him. But Sanders is looking like he could go 1 or 2. I'm sure MM will win some meaningless games and ruin our chances of that happening.

At this point I do not know. I won't look into it until after the season and getting near draft time.
We have a shot at doing really well with some luck. Top 5 looks really good. Teams will reach for qbs causing top players to drop.

Sanders is a reach. We are more likely to trade down and take BPA.

I have my differences with some of your opinions but you definitely nailed this one.
Spot on.

Well, I’m 70. The worst team we ever had was the strike season. But this is close.
that was horrible, when the Skins scab players rolled over our team full of vets like Randy White on their way to a 2nd SB win from a strike shortened season in 6 years. That was a nightmare

No it’s not!!! 89 was bad. This team is way better, they’re just not playing worth a damn.
Stop being a drama queen
he isnt being a drama queen. This is worse because we have a QB that will tie up our salary cap for years and a delusional owner/gm. At least in 89 they were setting up for some great drafts and had a great new coach and there was hope
