Would you be for or against the idea of Sean Payton returning to the Cowboys?

I would personally go and lay out the red carpet for Payton and escort Jason to the border.

This is just for conversation purposes based on Jerry Jones' recent comments and some chatter that I've been hearing.

But how would you personally feel about the following scenario:

There are rumors that Drew Brees might call it quits after this season, especially if he and the Saints manage to win the Super Bowl. If that happened, word is that Sean Payton who look to leave the Saints organization as well. And rumor is that he still has a clause in his contract that he can void it upon any changes in ownership (which has occurred already given Tom Benson's passing).

Payton still has a home in Texas and his son plays high school ball here.

Speaking hypothetically at this point, but if Payton was the "opportunity" in the coming weeks that Jones was referring to, would you be for or against the idea of Payton returning to the Cowboys to coach this team?

I'd be wholeheartedly for it, although I doubt that Sean Peyton would be amenable to a return to Dallas. As I recall, he was a Parcells protégé who probably didn't like the idea that Jerry saw fit to welcome TO into the fold contrary to Bill Parcells' wishes. Yet, if he saw fit to disregard it, I'd be more than pleased to see him return to the Cowboys. He'd constitute a huge improvement over JG, imho. Nevertheless, I tend to doubt it'll happen.

He would be much better than Linehan at OC......... Just joking. Absolutely I would take Payton as head coach. He can actually develop QBs. He helped Romo and look what he did with Brees after he left the Chargers. Not only that he took a gadget guy like Hill and made him somewhat a threat throwing. He would do wonders with the talent of Dak. Plus he knows how to really have a balanced offense, whether it's a shoot out or play ball control.

If Brees were to retire, I can't help but to think that the Cowboys head coaching job would look mighty appealing to Payton. The Saints are a very good team, but let's face it, they're not built for the long haul, and with a 40+ year old quarterback, they never will be.

Conversely, the Cowboys have virtually everything in place that an offensive-minded coach would look for:
  • Young quarterback, who will be around for a long time. And it's well-documented that Payton has an affinity for mobile quarterbacks as well. Before acquiring Hill, Payton talked to Tim Tebow about a similar role several years ago. And rightfully or not, some have compared Dak to Tebow on may occasions. I think he'd be eager to work with and develop Prescott.
  • The league's leading rusher is already in place. And Payton could do much more with Elliott in the passing game than the Linehan dumpoffs.
  • What is still one of the league's top offensive lines. Not the best right now, but they have the potential to get back on top quick.
  • Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and a young, talented and improving passing game
Coaching continues to let this talent down and I think that would all change with Payton at the helm. As long as he has a solid coordinator running the defense, I think this team would be a serious contender.

If I remember correctly, Payton has and continues to be on good terms with the Joneses and the Cowboys. I don't remember there ever being any bad blood.

"What about Sean Payton? Yes, he is the New Orleans Saints' coach, but Jones has long been a fan and there have always been rumblings of a reunion. Payton took the Saints back to the playoffs in 2017, but he has been in New Orleans a long time."

Yes, but even though JJ stated in the past that he shouldn’t have let Payton get away, I’m sure the “opportunity” JJ mentioned has nothing to do with the HC

You're probably right, but there is and has been chatter for a long time about a potential return.

With Payton as coach, Dallas would instantly become the Superbowl favorite. The offensive mind of Payton and the full defensive take over with Richard and this team is a good special teams coach away from having top 5 units in all 3 phases

I saw it reported that Jerry paid Bill a handsome sum of money not to reveal anything unflattering about their relationship. Whether it's true or not, I couldn't say for sure. I do recall that BP felt strongly enough about TO being welcomed that he refused to mention him by name. Jerry surely did interfere with his head coaches before and after Parcells, however and I'm reasonably certain that Payton was a witness to it. Nevertheless, if he were to overlook any and all doubts as to Jerry's misgivings, I'd be more than pleased to see him return. I'm sure most of us would as well. ;)

Payton would come only in the condition jerry stops meddling

Then the clapping carrot can go suck for one of those 5 teams who apparently :rolleyes::rolleyes: want him. :muttley:

This would be awesome but won't happen of course

Of course but it isn’t about what we want.
