Would you be mad if Seattle offered a Earl Thomas for David Irving straight up trade?

why not just sign him when he's a free agent after next year?

I'd love to have Earl here to help mentor our young secondary and tie it together though.

Thomas' best season was 2013. He's declined ever since.

Look it up yourself. I'm not here to do research for every poster enamored by a name.
You’re not here to do any research obviously. Thomas was 1st team All-Pro in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
Edit: correction on 2017, the Wikipedia chart wasn’t intially clear to me. He was 2nd team in 2017.

What's left on Thomas contract?
On April 28, 2014, Thomas agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $40 million with $27.725 guaranteed, making him the second highest paid safety in the NFL behind All-Pro safety Eric Berry.

How are you guys even able to evaluate these safeties based on stats?

What else do we have to evaluate them on? Pro-bowl appearances? Earl has a couple of studs in the secondary that no doubt help him, Chancellor and Sherman. Also plays in a completely different system than Rod uses. Maybe having Richard here will completely change the philosophy of having the CB's play off and in zone. No one really knows that. I guess I'd have to trust Richard to make the decision about whether Earl is a good fit with the system we use and the safeties we already have. I assume JG would listen to him.

I would laugh so hard if we obtained him and he had a crap season.
Everyone and their dags would blame the coaching staff and I will revel in it.

How many savior Safeties have we trotted through this organization since Woody left. I just can't avoid that thought. Would Earl be the next great hope or the next great disappointment? I suppose some players are worth the risk. His production has dropped off over the past 2 years though and that's a fact. Yes in 2016 he was injured. Yes in 2017 he didn't have Chancellor or Sherman back there. Guess what, he won't have Sherman or Chancellor back there either if he plays for the Boys. I'm glad we hired Richard. I'm sure he'll have some input if a trade between the Boys and the SeaHawks ever came to fruition. If it never happens some fans will be like waaaaah, Richard has no clue

Hey. If we tender a first round offer to Irving we have our answer. The team views him as nearly untouchable. If we offer a second round tender they're open to negotiation. Then you have to have a partner willing to negotiate. We'll know in about a month, that's what makes the off season so frustrating, it doesn't happen fast enough

Why would I take a 29 year old safety for a 24? year old D lineman with all world potential?

All this David Irving talk is getting carried away and Stephen Jones' words are being misconstrued.

Bottom line: If Irving plays next season like he did when healthy last season (and keeps his head on straight) then he'll be way more essential than ET. We also would not be able to let him walk and would franchise him. If he then plays another season like that, then he'd have played 2 dominant seasons while maturing and keeping his head straight. At that point you are even less likely to let him walk.

Because they may not sign him back thats why

I wouldnt do the trade! Thomas has seen better years and injuries are starting to accumulate. A good Dline pass rusher can do more to help the secondary than a good safety can do. I also think Irving is a much needed bookend to Lawrence. If Dallas signs Lawrence to a massive contract he must have some help or he will be a casualty with a worn out body in a few years. we saw Dallas ruin Ware by expecting him to be the man on defense. Signing Irving and Lawrence would be a start in getting this defense fixed.

I agree with this.

I love the player ET but I don't know he would be the game changer here. Irving can be a disrupter on the DL.

I honestly don't understand the obsession with ET at this time. I have always been a fan of ET & IF he truly wants to be here then that has some value. If he can teach the youngsters that has value. But i don't know that he is the best FA safety you can get at this point if you factor in age & money. The money would have to come down for me to think it was a fair deal. Remember, he apparently thought about retirement after breaking his leg. If you truly feel the position is a priority, not sure that the draft isn't the best option.

IF we are scared of Irving & want to get some value for him, then I can understand looking to trade him.

What's there to be mad about?

If anything I think most would praise a DI for ET trade. It would show a buy low sell high strategy which I am all for and have said in previous posts.

Flipping a practice squad player/starter with off the field issues for a pro bowl/SB winning safety (while filling a big need) sounds like the cowboys would come out ahead.
