If Dak is released, he has a $60 million cap hit whether we keep him or release him.
Therefore, the Cowboys want to sign him to an extension to prevent that big of a hit.
Going into the Playoffs, it was almost guaranteed that he was going to get Top of the Market salary.
Now, with his disastrous performance, there is no way the Cowboys can justify paying him that nor any where near the $50 million range.
His last contract averaged $40 million a year. In those 4 years he has 1 playoff Wild Card win.
So, do you let Dak play his last year and absorb the $60 million cap hit?
Give him an a $50 Million+ extension?
Would you like him to resign but only on a sub $50 million deal?
Dak doesn't have much leverage for a trade because no team can justify to their fanbase giving Dak a premium deal.
But the Cowboys don't have much leverage either given the Cap hit.
The Cowboys fanbase will be irate if he gives Dak a premium deal which would hamper the team for the next few years.
Let him finish his contract. Regardless of what some here say/think, Dak's a good quarterback, just not good enough to win a SB, which for me at least is why the game is played. Any other quarterback Dallas could get, either a drafted rookie, Lance or a free agent like Flacco, would have to get in sync with the receivers, etc. for at least a year anyway. No rookie quarterback (at least so far) has ever won a SB, though some have gotten close. So, it's very doubtful Dallas' draft pick this year would do so, especially since they will draft way down due to their 12-5 record.
Dak gives you at least a modicum of play that combined with players like Lamb, Cooks, Ferguson, etc. can win some games, and again we all know you can't win the SB unless you get in the playoffs.
Not that I expect any more from Dak that we've already gotten, but the defense will get Diggs back, maybe (though I doubt it) Mazi will develop into what a first round draft pick should, maybe another Parsons-level defender can be drafted, and the defense will improve. (That's assuming Quinn is fired, as he should be). In other words, the chance for a title with Dak is more likely that with a rookie, etc. Not much more, but I'd be tearing the team apart after this next season anyway, so let's at least have a vet qb that has playing time with the receivers....
