WR's... by the numbers

OK.....this next bit left me scratching the head...

Bowe has identical yardage and TDs from the same conference. Unless this is a typo, why is Meachem preferable? I don't necessarly disagree, just wondering.

I don't know the specifics about who started what years, but something else to take into account is that these are career numbers and Bowe is the only Senior out of him, Ginn, Jarrett, and Meachem.

Great numbers, but while people love him in round 2, I don't think he's considered in the class of the other guys listed who are expected to go in round 1....I don't think anyone here would be happy with Rice at #22.

That SEpt thing is a little freaky, ain't it?

I don't know too much about him and I could have sworn there were a couple on this board wanting him at #22. They aren't bad numbers for a two year career, but he was in a Spurrier system and Steve isn't known for producing NFL caliber receivers.

That September thing is freaky. Sounds like the makings of a B movie.

I dont believe Jarrett goes round 1 and Ginn may not.

Ginn is super fast and quick but is small and banged up. Some teams may completely scratch him off the board due to size. A few others may label him a 3rd down returner type who isn't worth a 1st rounder.

Jarrett has been very effective but so was Mike Williams. In the score happy Pac 10 stats mean very little. His issue is pure speed. He is making Michael Irvin look like a real speedster and while he should be a player for a long time it is nice, not great player he'll be tagged with IMHO.

Stats are nice and all but do not account for differences in offenses, talent around you or opponents.

Most of Ginn's catches were very short and he ad-libbed to get the yardage. Down the field they had other receiving options.

I'd rate these guys:
1. Johnson
2. Meachem
3. Bowe
4. Ginn
5. Higgins
6. Jarrett
7. Rice

The highlights in the other thread were very interesting....here's what I saw:
Bowe was not impressive....big, strong guy, but sluggish feet.
Gin looked very fast running with short passes and cutbacks...great with ball in his hands, but his receptions and patterns were lackluster.
Meacham was very impressive to me...good patterns, great catches, speed and balance after the catch, and rarely gave away that the ball was on its way.
Jarrett showed very quick feet on his 2nd and even 3rd moves with pretty complicated patterns, and he was always where he was supposed to be as the ball got there while he was open...he showed no problems getting separation from defenders on his moves...he may not run a fast 40, and the video mentioned that he's sometimes sluggish off the line, but when he made his final moves out of his patterns to where the ball would be, he looked plenty quick and always had plenty of separation.

Of course, they are highlight reels for a reason....be sure to take a look for yourself.

I'm not sure what highlight reels you're talking about, but I've seen video on all of the players you're talking about. I don't know how you can come to the conclusion you did about Dwayne Bowe..."not impressive"? That boggles my mind honestly because every video of him I've seen I've come away very impressed. Great routes, good hands, good speed, can break tackles, gets separation.

And then the analysis on Jarrett I have to completely disagree with too. It's obvious by watching videos that he struggles getting separation and from all the clips I've seen I can only recall one route where he really was able to create distance between himself and the CB in man coverage. Sure he may be good at finding soft spots in zone, but that's not separation.

Where are these videos?

That is a very nice ranking, although I think you might put Rice above Higgins (considering level of competition) and drop Jarrett even lower.

Meachem and Bowe are almost interchangable, IMO. I just come away thrilled everytime I watch Bowe punish would-be tacklers and make tough catches.

Gotta agree about Jarrett. I watched him quite a bit over the last 2 years and he certainly made some plays- BUT this separation thing- NOPE.

thats wierd Bowe and Meachem and the exact same yards and Tds I mean thats is wierd.

You gotta pay for them. BTW, I agree with Wayne. Bowe, to me, is the least impressive of the high profile WRs.

Part of my personal choice was also watching the video's....never saw much of Bowe till the videos, but I found him the least impressive of all the wideouts.

Also, if production is even, then I think speed and big play ability does become the determining factor, so I'd still take meacham over Bowe even though they had similar stats....besides the fact that Meacham didn't start until this year, according to his video, so he poured it on this past year.

I'm glad I'm not the only one underwhelmed with Bowe.

And I did love how Meachem made the first DB miss and then ran away from everyone.

Player ... catches ... yards ... TD's
Johnson .... 178 ....... 2927 ..... 28 38 Games played Jr.

Meacham ... 125 ...... 2403 ..... 26 37 Games played Jr.

Gin ............. 135 ...... 1943 ..... 15 37 Games played Jr.

Bowe ......... 154 ...... 2403 ..... 26 46 Games played Jr.

Jarrett ....... 216 ..... 3138 ...... 41 38 Games played Jr.

Hill ............ 148 ..... 2704 ....... 32 31 Games played Sr.

Rice .......... 142 ..... 2233 ....... 23 23 Games played Soph.

Couple things here. Look at the games played and then compare the production and you will see that the two most productive WRs here are Rice with 97 yards, 1 TD per game and Hill with 87 yards, just over 1 TD per game. The least productive is Ginn and Bowe with 52.5 yards per game, .41 TDs per game and 52.24 yards per game and .57 TDs per game.

Incidentally, Higgins' numbers look like this. 65.7 Yards per game with .65 TDs per contest.

Jarrett's numbers per game are pretty good too: 5.68 receptions, 82.57 yards, 1.08 TDs.

Yes, he would rank third from this list.

Where exactly do you pay for these videos at?

Nicely done Wayne. I have been hoping for Jarrett since day-1 but would be very happy with Meachem if we went that direction instead. The only guy I really don't want is Ginn. He isn't an NFL starting WR IMO and would be used mostly on STs. You don't spend 1st round picks on STs players.

Jarrett runs his routes correctly, catches everything thrown anywhere near him, and scores TDs. What more could you want?

That's exactly how I feel about Gin....but if the guys who study them and know much more than I do decide he's a top WR for the future and pull the trigger, then I'll be firmly behind him and excited about it. I trust the guys in our organization who make the decisions now. I don't think they'd draft Gin unless they felt certain he'd be a serious contributor this year and a starter by next year.

I'm a huge fan of Jarrett's, but considering meacham's only been a full time starter one year, he has plenty of upside to his career as well.

I'm hoping we trade down from #22. All these WR's scare me to some extent.

You can purchase this kind of thing by buying premium Draft info on various sites or you can try and search the web for player videos.

Note: my link doesn't go to the same page despite the fact that I copied it directly....I'll do a response to Doom's thread so it will stay on page one for a bit...click on the link he provides (maybe it has something to do with him paying).

It's still on page 1....Dooms' thread "SI draft prospect site"....
Here's the link to the video... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/foo...sition/qb.html

I watched all five of the WR's in my thread...that's where I got the stats and my impressions. Again, I don't know much about Bowe, and if you've seen more of him, I'm not saying you aren't right, but if you watch these selected video's, there's nothing very impressive about Bowe in them. Also, if you watch Jarrett, you'll see the quick feet, good moves, and separation I was talking about...by separation, I'm not talking about getting 10 yards behind a guy...in the video here, when he makes his final move, he gets excellent separation and is always open for the catch, be it a TD or first down...that separation allows the QB to get the ball to him before the CB recovers.

Again, I know someone could easily put together a better video of any of these guys, but I think you'll admit that what I saw in these were pretty accurate.
