I think the first thing is to accept the problem is not going to get fixed this year. Accept the losing record in 2024. Use the rest of this season to evaluate the talent they have.
Decide on what kind of team they want given where they are with contracts. I would plan to build a physical stout defense and an offense that runs the football. Dak is the QB because Jerry already made that mistake, but that doesn't mean they have to put Dak in a position where the team success depends on him. This is not a 1 year makeover. This is a 3 year plan.
Fix the trenches first. They desperately need to be more physical in the interior defensive line. Draft or sign free agents to fix that problem. They need a pass rush, and it cannot be just Micah Parsons. They need at least 1 more speed rusher on the outside. They need inside power and push.
I would seriously consider trading Diggs after this season. He does not fit the style of defense I want to play. I want corners that will come up and support the run defense, not run away from tackles. Maybe they can get a first round pick for him if he improves his play in 2024. But I would assume they could get at least a 2nd.
Start playing Juanyeh Thomas and Marquise Bell more in their base defenses. Safety is another problem for this team and they need to find out if anyone they have is worth keeping. I don't see Hooker as a long term solution. Donovan Wilson got paid and is not the consistent player he was. Maybe he can fix that this year.
On offense, I would plan on obtaining at least 2 RBs for next year, one in the draft and maybe one more in free agency. I want more speed at RB. Start using Luepke as a power back now. See if he can handle that role. I would get Flournoy in there more often and see what he has to offer as a receiver. They are stuck with CeeDee for now but they need more speed and talent at WR. Draft and free agency will work to fix that too.
On the offensive line they have some big problems. Its going to take a couple of years to fix it with all the other problems they have. Martin will retire next year. They have to find his replacement. I would put Guyton back at LT now and let him learn the position, or fail. I think he has potential and needs another year to develop. Beebe I think will be fine in a year as well. Tyler Smith goes back to LG. Bass to RG, and then they have Steele. After this year they can move on from Steele and his contract. Maybe they can trade him. They need a replacement. Maybe Guyton moves to the RT and Smith stays at LT. Then they need a OG. Hoffman? or draft 1. Whatever, but this OL is awful and needs a major improvement.
I would fire all the coaches after this year. I like MM but it is time for some new ideas. I want young innovative coaches with passion and grit. I want coaches who will instill discipline and physicality into my team. I want coaches who will not tolerate repeated mental mistakes. No more favorites. Produce or leave.
If I am the GM of Dallas right now, I start planning for 2025. What are the greatest needs? Who are my free agents worth keeping? Where am I getting old? Who are my salvageable talents? What does my CAP look like going out 4 years? What definitive step can I take in the off-season to make significant improvements over 2024?
But most importantly, I would bring a new philosophy to the role. I would not be afraid to say no to my own players during contract negotiations, and I would be more than willing to use my CAP to pay for suitable free agents that can help me immediately.
