A coach of that sort will never be hired in Dallas by the Jones family. It's not even a consideration. Here's what they view the role of the head coach and the responsibilities to be:
- You will not be paid top of scale, or even at the mid point.
- You will not get to select all of your assistant coaches.
- Jerry and Stephen will sit in on your coaching meetings and undercut your authority with your own coaches.
- Jerry will set the culture for the team.
- Players are selected by the Joneses, and the Joneses retain final say over the 53 man roster.
- The players have a direct line to Jerry Jones, and can sidestep any attempt by the coach to discipline players by having Jones overrule the edict.
- The Joneses will be on the radio multiple times per week, uttering statements that make your job more difficult to do, including media interactions as well as with your players.
- The Joneses will disclose player injury status, availability, and starting status, further neutering their head coach.
- Jerry will hold a press conference outside the locker room doors after each home game, and often at the same time that the coach addresses the media.
- Jerry will have sponsors observe practice, he will make productions about appearing during practice, distracting the team from preparation.
- There is no accountability in the organization except for this position.
This is how Jerry Jones feels about the head coach position, hence the "anyone of 500 coaches...." line he uttered prior to firing Jimmy Johnson. He views himself as the head coach, and the field coaches as his subordinates.
