When I was 24 the Cowboys were approaching rock bottom. The Landry era was hurtling towards its catastrophic end. The Cowboys I had known my entire life were on the verge of becoming the Saints. There seemed to be no hope. The team was sold to a loudmouthed oilman who hired an equally brash college coach. Things got even worse.( I would LOVE to have had the internet back then lol) There was no hope. My Cowboys were gone. 1-15. Laughing stock. Worse then the Saints.

Keep the faith young men and women. Keep the faith.

Yes, but even that rock bottom looked promising the very next season. It was a very brief period of hopelessness. This one has lasted for a total of ten years at least if you look at the Parcells era as a bright period.

That's true. The only time I ever felt hopless as a fan was in 1988 and 1989. I could see the improvements in 1990.

Not necessarily. The slide started well before the Jones' and the 1-15.

Landry wasn't the innovator he once was and the team slid dramatically in the mid 80's. Many fans could see the writing on the wall in 1986.

I get your point, Six years doesn't compare to eighteen years but at the beginning of that stretch nobody could foresee the perfect storm building on the horizon and hope was very optimistic.

Keeping in mind the standard the team had set and the fact that an absolute legend needed to be replaced before change could happen and it was a pretty rough time.

Not saying it doesn't suck bad for the youngsters. Just that the team has been in this neighborhood before.

Just trying to give you some hope. :)

Chin up, fellow fan.

I was a child when the Cowboys went to five Super Bowls. Then came the barren years: One bad draft after another and the decline of Tom Landry -- I was ready to pack it in and follow the new basketball team in town.

Then, Jimmy came and all hope was renewed. Spares were sent to the asthma field and malcontents were quickly sent to the Gulag or Siberia. That first year was brutal but three SBs were soon to follow. I was in my late 20s early 30s when the new dynasty was born.

Hang in there, there is always hope!

Well said... Hang in there young fans! We will be back trust me!

I'm 43 and two of my all-time favorite seasons were 1990 and 1991. You could clearly see the seeds of a budding dynasty. Even in the 7-9 '90 season. Jimmy was coach of the year. They were 7-7 in '90 and if Aikman doesn't get injured late in the year they probably make the playoffs. The wild card win at Chicago vs Ditka was a total surprise and that's the game when we all knew we really had something. And then the '92 NFC Championship at SF was and still is my favorite all time game as a fan. It too was a surprise. I knew they were good but didn't think they were quite ready to win at SF. But I was 22 and could really revel and celebrate it. Man I hope we see those days again. It's gonna take another bold hire like Jimmy to do it. Does Jerry have it in him?

I caught the tail end of the great teams of the late 70s,
Suffered through the 80s
rejoiced in the 90s
Suffering through the 00s once again.

I was also at the "Snowball Game" at Philly in 1989. It was the first football game I ever attended and to this day that is why I detest the Eagles and their lousy fans more than any other team.

25 here. I vaguely remember the second 90s Super Bowl, and I distinctly remember SB XXX. Little did I know that the highlight of my life as a Cowboys fan would be at age 7.

Thanks Jerrah

After being at a lot of home games during the 1-15 season, I was there in Texas Stadium on opening day in 1990 with my dad.

As I recall, Novacek caught the game-winning TD, so in one week, we matched the win total for 1989, and the stadium was ELECTRIC!

My dad and I both knew that day that with Johnson and Aikman in charge along with a lot of younger players (Norton, Irvin, Johnston, Tolbert, etc.), the arrow was pointing up. Subsequent drafts only infused more young talent.

Even though there were a lot of growing pains to come, it was an awesome feeling to know that winning was ahead of us. One which I long for today.

I'm 24 and feel your pain. By the time I was a "real" football fan and fully understood everything the Quincy Carter era was underway. Nothing but heartbreak in our lifetime

Props to ya, becoming and staying a fan with Qcar...you still backed the right horse, hang in there...

I think some are still there and are afraid to return....

My niece - an Cowboy football fan - is about to graduate high school. In her lifetime, she's been able to witness one playoff victory. This from a franchise that once enjoyed 20 consecutive winning seasons.

These days, a lot of DFW youngsters seem indifferent to this franchise. And there's little wonder as to why.

It wasn't always so.

I was 10 when the Cowboys won their last Superbowl, but at that time I was into barbie dolls and tea parties so I dont remember it. It wasnt until two years later I became hooked on the boys. But, I dont know what it feels like to support a successful football team :(

Just turned 27. The last time the Cowboys won a superbowl, I had just turned 10.

My earliest memory of the Cowboys was wiping the floor with Buffalo in '93. I remember vividly the no call on Deion Sanders PI in the 94 NFCCG, and I remember the 95 superbowl very well. But even still, could not appreciate it.

I am 59, and have been a fan since 65 or 66. I have seen it all.

But I have a friend who is 17, and he is a Cowboys fan because his Dad is. (or was, not sure)

He has never seen anything but disappointment, .. he now expects it to happen.

I bow before him when I see him, and we both laugh. I bow and tell him he is a great fan, since he has never won anything and is still a fan.

Gotta admire the kids.
