It looks to me like that’s what it came down to based on the salary cap. The Cowboys had to choose between keeping Cooper or the combination of Gallup and Schultz. Clearly we see what Dallas chose, what would your preference have been?
I definitely would have kept Cooper.
Appreciate the post.
I guess I just don't agree that it was one or the other.
We could have kept all 3.
Coop could have been restructured at a cap savings of over 12 mil.
I get the kick the can argument, but the fact is the cap is slated to expand tremendously in the next few years, as the Covid hangover clears and the new TV deal kicks in. The cap could go as high as 248 next year, potentially a 40 mil increase.
I also get that he had a top of position contract and we were getting less than a top of position performance.
I just wonder how much of that was our OC being in over his head.
The Kurt Warner video comes to mind for me, pointing out how foolish our schemes were in the Niners playoff loss.
I think you'll see good WRs going for as much or more than Coops contract in the next few offseasons, as the Cap explodes.
Dumping a top WR for nothing is not good asset managment. We gave up a 1st for him remember. That's horrible management. Buy high/trade low, that's the Cowboy way under the Jones'.
Maybe if we hadn't given our solid but unspectacular QB a top of the league contract we wouldn't be in such a cap pinch.
I would have restructed Coop (and DLaw, and Collins BTW), kept Gallup and Schultz.
You'd be set at the position heading into the draft and FA and could always trade one of them later, maybe when their value was higher.
As it is we threw Coop under the bus, destroyed any trade value he may have had, then traded him for peanuts.
Well done.
