Zack Martin does not report to camp

Zack Martin was given an NFL record highest paid Guard ever contract extension back in 2018. With 2 years still left in that contract, Zack Martin is trying to pull a stunt for another record paid new contract extension at 33 years of age. If he misses all of training camp, I would be looking to trade him and send him and the rest of the team a message that such actions will not be tolerated.
I wish there was a way to dislike posts.

Zach Martin is the best player on the Cowboys (along with Micah) and deserves to be paid at the top of his position for this year. I wouldn’t give him a massive 4 year extension due to his age but he should get big money for this year and next at least.

The mediocre QB would look a lot worse without Martin around.

I agree!
Why does a player think they should be one of the top paid at their position the whole life of their contract?

Probably because almost all star veterans like ZM hate training camp. If he gets to miss two weeks and he gets his money, it’s “win-win”.
He is fined $50,000 for each practiced missed and the Cowboys can’t forgive him. I bet he will be there before the weekend.

We are gonna find out if the Jones' are gonna fall into this House of Horrors renegotiating contracts because players are not happy with them and feel they should get more. Slippery slope. No matter how great the player is, you do leave yourself open Did Jerry and Stephen learn from the Zeke fiasco or will they open Pandora's Box.?

If you're worried about extending other players (i.e. Diggs) you do, though I agree you don't.

There's nothing to suggest he won't still be a top OG until he's 36-37. No injury history, no decline in play.
That's a lofty assumption. Martin has a big cap hit in 2024. Diggs big cap hit will probably come in 2025, or at least it will be substantial. Both Diggs and Lamb in 2026. I'm more worried about all 3 happening at the same time.

Stick to 4 years or less on the extensions. 6 years is too long in today's NFL. No player will be happy at the tail end of that contract.

Martin's cap hit is going to come down next year via restructure/extension now or before then. He's not going to play with a $23m cap hit. But it doesn't really matter if you're paying all 3 at the same time or not, especially since they've likely built in restructures to Diggs that keep his annual cap hit down and will do the same with CD. They'll probably all end up with cap hits around 15m in 2026 and 2027. That's fine.

You don't know for sure if Tyler Smith can't/won't play Right Guard. He's shown he is smart enough to play both Left Guard and Left Tackle.
1. No need. Edoga played primarily right side in the NFL. Farniok has played RG when ZM missed a few snaps.

2. They've repeatedly said "He's a left side player" when the media asks about OG or OT.

Stephen Jones top priority by far is the average annual value of the contract. They can always move cap money around, but if the sum of all player's AAV is over the cap limit, that is impossible to sustain.

Obviously in any given year they might push cap hits into the future, but that's not the big picture issue.

People can use credit cards to delay paying for some of their expenditures; However, that is not sustainable.

Of course it will come down next year. If they need the space. But they can't keep doing it because he won't play forever. Now how much do you suggest paying a 35+ year old guard? Lets not get crazy here.

Ok? We don't even know what the cap is going to be in 2027 so that's a pretty meaningless line of thinking.

Move Tyler Smith to Zack Martin's starting position at Right Guard. Send the message to Zack Martin that he can be replaced with superior and much younger quality. Plug in Matt Farniok at Left Guard. Chuma Edoga, Asim Richards and TJ Bass are the backups. Problem solved.
Not sure that would play out like you think it would play out.

Nick Bosa is pulling the same stunt. Once they see that 50k a day pulled from their checks, they'll rethink things in a hurry.

This is not a way for a leader to lead.
