There are plenty of great examples of being proactive being the better course of action as well.
WE HAVE WATCHED JERRY try to reinvent the wheel for 25 years to no success. Its one thing to be prudent/proactive...its another to defy logic and build a team thru means that are nonsensical. Now that we have a proven HC and staff, will Jerry back of just enough to allow us to get over the hump? This draft and free agency period is vital to MM for success. The new CBA certainly helps.

Not trying to be argumentative here but didn't he always leverage? What were the chances of Cowboys letting him walk after getting rid of a 1st rounder for him? If I had to take a guess he's gonna get a Michael Thomas deal and Dak gets franchised unfortunately.
No offense taken but thanks for clarifying :)

I don’t think the Cowboys would have let him walk but without the tag now it’s much more likely he can hold out to see what other teams offer and the Cowboys stand a much better chance of having to win a bidding war with another team or two.

Agreed. I would hate to see the NFL expand any more than that.

The regular season games need to maintain their importance. What makes the NFL regular season great is that EVERY game matters so much. Unlike baseball or hockey or basketball. Every game is important and carries weight to it which causes happiness or frustration, when a team wins or loses.

Having more regular season games and more playoff teams which reduces the importance of each regular season game would be a mistake.

It’s also why college football is so intense. If your team is a clear national title contender, every game is like a playoff game, because one loss can mean your title chances are over.
By the end of the regular season, there will be no more mediocre teams at 8-8; either a team sucks at 7-9 or is good enough at 9-7. I wonder how many teams make the playoffs at 7-9?

Teams are not longer bound by the 30% rule in negotiating player contracts so hopefully that makes it easier to get deals done.
They got around it by hook or by crook. Maybe the NFL just acknowledged it and is letting it ride.

I'm shocked it was this close.

Me too.

And the timing wasn't all that unexpected either. There's a legit chance our nation will be going through a recession soon, even if a short term one, so it was probably best to agree sooner than later and start locking up contracts.

I am old enough to have witnessed the great dominating teams of the 70s, 80s and much of the 90s. So I have not forgotten what the NFL was and have experienced what the NFL has become.

Doughts suck. Jerry Jones The-Perpetual-3-Decade-Old-Energizer-Bunny General Manager sucks. Still, that, in grand scheme, is only a fraction of the big picture. So, as a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the National Football League it plays in, comprehends the all-encompassing quality of the league as it is now compared to what it used to be...

Well, sue me.
no need for that. hey, i get it but, unless dumb luck happens and someone has sold the farm and many are playing on first contracts. Those days are over. I was there with ya. I just didn't appreciate what i was watching at the time. silly me.

4 this season.

2021 will go to 3 and the extra regular season game
Too many preseason games at 4. Coaches know what they have pretty quickly. The bigger question is when does the regular season start? Earlier in September?

Makes me wonder what the 'Nay' voters wanted. Anyone know what significant issues didn't go forward?
Makes me wonder also. Voting no makes no sense to me.

I'm glad all those big name players who came out against this deal got it shoved down their throats.

I think this new CBA is the start of finally bring a long slow death of the NFL. Have you ever heard the old saying "inmates running the asylum". In both this CBA and the last CBA the players have taken more and more of the decisions previously made by the coaches. Gone with the last CBA are the two a days during training camp. Last CBA dictated how many padded practices which means practices with contact during training camp and then during the season leaving 2 weeks where no pads can be worn during practice. This CBA cuts almost in half the number the number of padded practices in training camp from 28 down to 16 with no increase in padded practices during the season when they go to a 17 game schedule. Both CBA states the maximum length of a practice. Used to be the head coach determined all of these things. They have expanded the number of players on the practice squad starting this season to 12 and starting 2022 to 14 players. They are adding 2 extra players to the active game day roster each week but 1 of those extra players HAS TO BE an offensive lineman. They say that will help with player wear and tear in the game 17 except those at the end of the roster usually only see snaps due to injury. My question is how will they know that the 47th and 48th played added to the game day rooster one of them is an offensive lineman? Then the reduction of a preseason game. Now teams are still going to have to give their starters some live action snaps in preseason so now with just 3 games that means the coaches have just 2 1/2 games to evaluate non-starters in live action snaps and even less padded or contact practices during training camp.

All of these changes are going to lead to a very sloppy NFL season coupled with now offering a participation trophy to one team in each conference to join the playoffs.which means that almost 1/2 of the of the teams will be in the playoffs. Now real NFL fans will continue to hold on watching but many of the casual and fair weather fans will move on to either watching other things or go and do other things during games. Eventually the real fans will start to lose interest. I wouldn't be surprised if the new TV contracts show some of this same kind of thinking and don't end up as big or as long as many think they will be. I think a lot of people will move to just watching college ball. I also think this new CBA will do wonders for the XFL when they start up again next season after the coronavirus thing has died.

It will start the same as always because this new CBA will call for a bye week after the 3rd preseason game.

Sounds like they didn't want that extra 30 minutes of work with a 17th game. They were already overworked, the poor babies. On average it was about 30 minutes of work for 16 days a year. Hard to feel pity for them when they make as much cash as they do for what amounts to about 8 hours of work for an entire year.

They would have been foolish to do anything else. Don't think the fans would tolerate another holdout. I wouldn't. It's all more greed anyway. Glad to see they did something about players affected by CTEs.

Kinda puts it in perspective. Too bad there are many older players who suffered the ravages of injury at pathetic salaries and benefits.
