The Seahawks tagged Joey Galloway years ago and got two 1st round picks from the Cowboys - for a wide receiver.
You take the best offer. And there certainly would have been at least one. Would that have been two 1st round picks? Unlikely, but numerous lesser players than quarterback have fetched two 1st round picks recently.
They'd have the 2020, 2021, and 2022 drafts (if they waited until the last minute) to find a replacement, to say nothing of whoever hit free agency during that same time frame.
Sounds like a list of excuses so the team doesn't look bad.
However anyone wants to spin it, they ultimately chose all of the worst options.
- Not considering free agent alternatives
- Slapping the exclusive tag on the player for a higher cost
- Not getting a long term deal done
They handled things about as poorly as they could have. Like they've done for about two years now.
