I invite everybody to pick an NFL team other than the Cowboys and go to their official website. Next, read the profile page for their GM and/or Player Personnel Director.
As you read these profiles you will come across a paragraph describing all their previous positions within an NFL or college team. Some will have started as junior scout, some as players, some as assistant coaches. There will be a list of impressive accomplishments they earned at each position they worked followed by a promotion to the next position and so on until you get to their present position for that team.
Now for those of you that have already read Jerry and Stephen's profile page in the Cowboy website, this missing paragraph that you see on every other GM or Director's profile page is referred to as "credentials"
Credential are a record of the previous experience and accomplishments of these NFL executives. Believe it or not, for the other 31 teams in the NFL, someone's credentials appear to have some importance to the owners. My theory is that, because those guys have success in every level of NFL player acquisition and management, the owners who hired them felt as though they might actually know what they are doing.....just a theory.
Of course, practical experience resulting in achieving results would be a waste of time for the genius that currently owns the Dallas Cowboys...as well as genius jr. Instead, they have determined that on the job training at the two highest team executive positions were sufficient. Heck, nobody else matches all that darn learning over the past 32 seasons. Of course, they haven't won anything since that guy with credentials left after the 1993 season but you just wait....and wait......and wait, until they've learned enough. Then, by golly, you'll see!
This is the way Jerry does it. It's the only way he's known, ever since his first job coming out of college. His interview was so impressive he was given the position of Vice President in a big insurance company....owned by his father.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Jerry didn't feel obligated to the fans of the Dallas Cowboys to go out and recruit....scour the countryside...in search of the best, most qualified, innovative, experienced individual to fill the position of Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and Player Personnel Director. Think of all those resumes, extensive vetting, endless interviews and in depth analysis.
I'm sure he was just as surprised as the rest of us when he discovered the perfect candidate was sleeping in one of his mansion's upstairs bedrooms .
