It’s protecting the image of the league.

Imagine if there were no suspensions relying solely on the law to address players conduct. Tiger Woods is a good example as sponsors abandoned him. What if sponsors started abandoning the league pulling out on TV ads. We’ve seen this happen on other celebrities.

This is what the owners empower him for. To protect the sum or the league from individual owners and teams agendas who aren’t as likely to discipline themselves.
its tarnished. The luster has been lost for a while now. Plenty blame to go round. Starting with Roger.

still dont like him..the zeke thing was just the beginning how he handled punishments they were ridiculously uneven, unpredictable and fat unfair..that alone was debacle. You won't change my mind..its smacks of Team Bias..he needs more oversight for his oversight..
Considering how the Rice thing blew up on him once that video surfaced and that panel of 4 voted unanimously for suspension, what was he to do, ignore them?

And let's factor in Elliott's behavior with the girl's shirt at the St. Patty's Day parade while the investigation is going on. That hit the news and immediately the court of public opinion was moved against him.

I agree, that whole ordeal was a chronic he said/she said mess and she had damaged credibility but with Elliott's public actions and that panel voting to convict, Goodell had little choice. He was the guy that went easy on Rice and that video sent shock waves throughout all sports. And the whole MeToo movement was just starting up. He could piss off the Cowboys owner and fans or he could piss off a lot more people and eventually, the owners. Booger overestimated his clout with the owners, he is not the dog, he is just a tail.

I do. I think the numbers were worse. I have at least a dozen friends that are die hard football fans. Like crazy fans. None of us watched the game. Unheard of just a few years ago. I think the NFL is in big trouble.

Nfl is dying. Multiple reasons. Kids also losing interest in playing. 10 years from now will be a vastly different pinache

I agree and that's his job, for it to start with him. He's paid all that money to take one for 32 teams.

Do we think he really wants to hand out punishment to grown men? He has a staff to investigate and an exec to advise him on the action needed.

He caught heat for turning the NFL into flag ball by many when he was facing something that could literally wreck the game and both of his predecessors were aware of that and ignored it. And he doesn't make the rules, there is a committee that does that. His job is to enforce their rules.

It actually starts with the players. It’s their conduct that tarnished the image. And then some owners condone it or unwilling to take action cause it could hurt the teams performance on the field.

And why the owners with the players association agreed to the disciplinary actions the Commish rules on. To protect and police the teams in the interest of the leagues image.

It doesn’t start with Roger. It ends with him.

yup players too...but that is a result of THEM being handed the keys to the city essentially. If the comish is powerless as you say, then why have one at all? Makes no sense.

It's not dying but it is changing and the incredible growth that it enjoyed for so many successive years is not happening now and much of that was due to the growth of fantasy ball. They went from ignoring that to a full court press embracing it because of the increase in viewers.

The NFL went from promoting the violence and collision aspect of the game to the pretty catches and flips into the end zone. When ESPN was forced to stop "Jacked Up", they saw an immediate decline in ratings on the pregame show that featured that popular segment. I loved it, was my favorite part of the MNF pregame. Could have been called The Roy Williams Show.

This is not new. When ABC moved MNF to ESPN, they did that for one reason. They were losing 18-34 males to Turner's wrestling on Monday nights. They even tried bringing in a comedian as the 3rd guy in hopes of bringing them back to no avail. Too many preferred the fake action to the real action of the NFL and this was well before the CTE issue.

At one time, baseball was America's favorite pastime and that got replaced by the NBA with Johnson/Bird an then Jordan and the NFL. The NBA has withdrawn with even the possible GOAT playing and the NFL is losing audience and many parents are refusing to let their sons play organized football.

The NFL will not die, it will always have it's followers, just like baseball still does. The NFL enjoyed many years of phenomenal growth but that is shifting on them and they have to adapt. That said, they're going to get the richest TV/Streaming contract in history coming up because while it might not still be the 500lb gorilla, it's still the King Kong of live TV.

RG was 100% wrong as his own investigators said NO PUNISHMENT was the best action..he then suspends him for more then most any other person gets with 100% NO PROOF..it was very wrong.//

who give a flytimn flip what happened at that parade, that not even an issue it happened After and wasnt even a complaint buy his FREIND just caught on cameras..so lets get real he was wrongly punished and severely so as 6 games is for real proved offenses.. EE was on his way to another Rushing title led the league ion YPG even with the mess surrounding him, if he plays 16 games he makes history winning 3 straight Rushing titles..period it was wrong.. no debate no facts to support anythg but RG was wrong..

And who hands players the keys to the city ?

We need a Commish to oversee the herd of owners going in 32 different directions.

The Commish is empowered to negotiate on the owners behalf with the Players Union, the Networks, Congress , Sponsors, Public Opinion, etc.

The league needs a moderator to suggest and make tough decisions they aren’t willing to implement on themselves in order to protect the leagues image and ultimately their interest.

In other words we can’t rely on John Doe in Minnesota for example to make decisions that are in the best interest of the other 31 teams.

Somebody has to be the fall guy. The owners don’t want to be . But at least they realize in order to protect the sum something or someone is needed to preside in everyone’s best interest.

owners and COMISH handed the keys to them. THAT was the fatal flaw and will be why the league will be in dire straits soon. Even if Goodell is just a figure head as you suggest, optics need to change and only way to change that with the fans is to make a positive, at least OPTICALLY. A change at the top. Fans are disenfranchised by the man at the top. Does that not matter? If not, then the fans will revolt. The product on the field should matter more. The guy who allegedly, is suppose to provide checks and balances(goodell)..has not. He randomly uses his power heavy handedly, not uniformly like is expected. He must go and the owners must fall in line.Fans are much smarter than they think.

you can tell the company men from their posts. Protect the company no matter what. RG was completely absolutely wrong and nothing excuses it. The only people making noise about that parade thing was the media and company men. No one else cared. Two wrongs do not make a right but not to company men.
