Rate the last movie you saw

It seems every review I've read trash it, even the ones I usually line up with. It's odd to me that I enjoyed it as much as I did. Maybe I'm an outlier on this one.

Maybe it's my fault. The first 20 minutes with the flashback to the 70s and stuff really got me pumped, and then I was disappointed.

Dune: 9/10

I've never read the books, and only made it halfway through the 80s version. The cinematography is amazing, the score is fantastic. The acting was great from basically everyone. I understand the source material is very dense, and they did a great job of letting things play out without a ton of exposition.

I had to deduct 1 point because it doesn't stand alone as a movie, since it is a part 1, with no greenlight for part 2.

I have good news - they greenlit the sequel yesterday, to release October 2023!

I give it an 8/10. Visually and sound - almost perfect. Not a boring frame in the movie, only one scene I felt the sound design was rough (I couldn't understand Paul talking about some visions at one point).

I think there were some editing decisions that were made to keep the movie under 2.5 hours and I think they were a mistake, in regards to Yueh's development and some other minor stuff that I know they filmed.

But a great movie!

They just skipped right over how spice makes space travel happen. Rewatching 1984, I forgot just how much exposition it had. It felt like half of it was an audio book.

They mentioned it in one time, and they never actually showed space travel (in both 1984 and 2000 miniseries they had an extended scene showing the transit). I feel like they should have had a brief scene using that projector to touch on the spice melange and why it is so important.

Yes. I watched it at home. And I agree with you that the scenes undoubtedly lost a significant amount of impact in translation.

And like I said, the quality of it all was top notch, my only issue was the slow pacing and feeling that unlike the original where too much was crammed into one film, this one felt stretched out for two films.

I think the only time I'll watch this at home is just before the next one comes out. I re-watched one scene (Salusus Secundus - the Sardaukar introduciton and chant) and was shocked at how less effective the scene was at home vs. the theater. I was palpably uncomfortable watching that, with that weird chant all around me and the rain sound like it was on top of me. At home - it was just another scene that took too long.

Which venue did you experience first? If it was the theater, maybe that scene only affects you the first time, then once you've seen it, the novelty wears off?

Saw it in Imax. And it's a little of both, but I am confident that the sound mix works better in the theatre. This movie would be a 7/10 at home, at best for me. It's truly designed for Imax (though I'd argue Dolby would be just as good or better).

I enjoyed it even though my wife and I had to watch it with subtitles due to the kids sleeping.

Dune was really good, saw it on HBO Max first but now going to a theater to get the full experience.

Got to watch it without distractions or you're going to miss a lot of little detail about how & why things happen.

I’m giving Dune an 8.5/10

The cinematography and directing was perfect. Costume design and makeup was perfect. Score was perfect. Acting was perfect.

It had some problems with just being so big. It’s just a dense film, and that’s likely because of the source material.

I absolutely loathed the music in this movie. Maybe not the music itself, but it's usage. It was SOOOOOOO overly dramatic and misplaced at most times. Very intrusive and distracting. Not complementary at all to what was going on.

That was easily the biggest drawback of the film. Second being the overuse of visions.

Dial those two things back (a lot with the first), and it would have been so much better.
