In the “old days”, that was a fumble. Now, incomplete pass. The irony? Had that been Dak, we all KNOW what the call would have been. Well, except for Trolls, ABD’s, and scoffing “realists”…

Then what the hell constitutes an empty hand,or is this a 2021 rule change specifically? I mean if the rule says that it is the correct call, but it seems completely inconsistent with the empty hand standard.

Empty hand is when the QB loses the ball before his arm starts moving forward.

You actually make my point. The Dez catch was obvious and the technicality of the rule was wrong. Hence they changed it.

agree 100%. Just like parts of the catch rule, the roughing the QB rules, PI rules…they are terrible, don’t pass the common sense test, and make the league look like a joke. I don’t care that it was a Cowboy game and I know it was the right call per the current rule…but common sense says that’s a fumble as the QB hadn’t voluntarily released that football from his hand before it was knocked out, the fact his arm was going forward is irrelevant in common sense land

exactly who cares if arm coming forward. Still have possession and ball knocked out fumble. If ball leaves your hand first then touched incomplete pass. Common sense

I understand your POV, but it's the least subjective way to define it and have consistency, and not give the officials more latitude to change games

The point I am trying to make is that you are absolutely correct based on any objective observation.

But you are wrong based on the rule.

I would, however, not bet on an identical call had that been Dak. The calls are consistently inconsistent:

Incomplete—Brady, Rodgers, Worthlessburger, Mahomes, etc.

Fumble—Dak, whomever QBs the Jets, Jags, Lions, Browns, Bears, etc.

The ball moved forward before being hit by DLaw. The arm and the ball were both moving forward when the ball was knocked out of his hand. The direction in which the ball was deflected is irrelevant, just as it would be in the case of a fumble.
