Hopefully he learns to block....
I don't think that's what he's being kept to do.

And I don't think Booger has forgotten the effect on Aikman when Novacek had to retire. He was as important to Aikman as Smith or Irvin.

I think he is above average, he is not Kelce, Kittle or Andrews. but he is defintley top of next group.

6th in targets, 3rd in receptions, 6th in yards, 5th in TDs.

and if Dak sucks as everyone says he does, then that makes schultz even more impressive
Not a good blocker. And stats mean nothing to me. He doesn’t do anything great. That’s Not to say he’s not a solid player. But not worth a franchise tag. Or big money. I know they want to do a long term deal. Let’s hope that avg per year number comes in better.

Other teams make decisions that they hope will lead them to a Super Bowl. We make decisions that we shrug about and hope will allow us to continue to be pretty good in a trash division. Chess vs. checkers, as it's always been around here.

Cooper complained about not getting the ball. Dak can't be made to look incompetent, so Coop gotta go. That is how we base decisions in Dallas. You say the right things and play mediocre ball? Welcome to the family for life. Welcome to the fam, Shultz. All you need to do now is have a nagging injury all season to tempt Daddy & Son, and you'll be the highest paid TE in the game.

Huh. Didn't see him as a must keep but someone did who works there.

Might as well get the long term deal wrapped up before his price goes even higher.

As would I but neither of us would have paid the QB 160M.

Once that was in place, everything became about making him worth that for ego reasons. They're not letting Cooper go because of money but because he failed to make their star a bigger star.

Schultz helped Prescott and Cooper made a veiled comment about targets and the owner even made a comment about the route running of the WR's. Cooper's strength. This was over before the season ended.

maxie, this is not going to be a running team. He did not pay the QB and spend a 1st on a WR and pay a receiving TE 10M, unless they work a long term deal, to be a run team.
Jones will have to learn that just because he paid a dude more than he is worth, it's not making him any better. If he wants Dak to be better, he needs to compliment the passing game not build it bigger.

If Jarwin had not reinjured himself I have a feeling Schultz probably would have been out the door. That injury changed everything and meant that Schultz was the only tight end on the roster with any meaningful playing time/ NFL impact.

That being said I do not agree with tagging him. It is a strange move that says "win now" while the rest of the moves they have been making thus far say "retool for the next few years". The lack of coherent strategy by this front office continues to amaze me. This was the year to cut loose ether Cooper OR Tank (not both) to gain massive savings against the cap, restructure a few deals (Dak's 15 million switch on his contract as much as it pains me to say) and push the chips in. To win you have to accept some level of risk. We see this every year with the teams that win the Superbowl. They don't just sit on their hands and say "We like our guys" every season. This team has been massively risk averse for the last 2 decades and look at what has happened. It is time to try something different.

Opposing defenses are not afraid of this guy. Massive overpay, but that's nothing new.
I don't care about fear, I care about effectiveness, and Schultz was 4th among TE's in TD's and 6th in yardage. If opponents aren't bothered by giving that up that's okay with me.

Besides, how many TE's are there that defense are afraid of? Kelse, Kittle and Andrews really, and it's not as if there is any reason to expect we could upgrade to that level if we want to. You might also include Waller, and Gronk still gets some respect, but he may retire now that Brady has. Otherwise Schulz compares well to anybody.

As for pay, Kelse, Kittle and Andrews are at the top, as they should be, but Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith and Austin Hooper are all right there at or higher than the franchise tag will be. Not bad players, but not any better, if as good as Schultz. The market is what it is. Besides, the franchise tag is just one season, and if the Cowboys agree to a longer term deal it probably will be at less of an annual cap hit than the franchise tag would be in 2022

I hear you . . . but like another poster mentioned . . . $10 million a year will be the starting point. . and I know they can allocated the money in the back end. . . but I dont think the Cowboys need a TE on the Rostor making those kind of figures over the next 3 years.

And in my opinion Cooper is way more valuable because He draws attention away from defenses while Shultz is a product of what defenses give Dak
Cooper is more valuable, but it isn't a decision of either Schultz or Cooper. It appears Cooper is gone regardless.

Not the worst move considering Jarwin cannot seem to stay healthy and no one behind him on the depth chart should be starting.

Yeah, he was injured. But there a lot of FA's out there.

Ertz, for example, or Rudolph.
Ertz would be a one year stop gap. even Cardinals aren't going to sign him.

Rudolsh is no where close to Schultz. he is just a name from the past. he is also older.

This is a man when asked why he gave Romo such a contract replied "Tony's getting paid better, he will play better".

You are applying all known football logic to this, since when does that work?

I said it in another post, he is not a good blocker, but he is good, not great as a reciever. he cashes in on the opportunities. you can't just ignore him (like McKeon and few others). so you don't game plan to stop him, but you have to make sure you account for him as he will hurt you if given opportunity.
