they could have not signed him as you suggested which I think any non-82 year old would have done, or a competent GM would have said "look we're going to sign this guy, lets try to extend him early" but they have this insane deadlines make deals without realizing they never put players in a desperate situation. Stephen after all infamously said the highest paid RB contract in history was the floor for an overrated "team player" zeke.
But instead they went the worst route possible and on top of it all included a no-trade clause.
I can see the negotiations now... "Look Dak, fine we'll make you the highest paid player ever". "No deal Stephen, I also need a no trade clause " "You got Dak, you're the best"

Winning.
 
I completely disagree with people saying his market would stay close to the same.
He has been apsolute trash this season....bottom 5 in the league.


No team would have lined up to pay him as the top QB in the NFL.

Sure Kurt got paid after getting injured l, but he wasn't playing like this. Dak has been so bad, you almost wonder if there is something else going on with him.

its not minimum money. the chiefs were smart and locked him up for 10 years 450M...that's a very long term contract with huge implications and risk. but its smart....he averages to about 45M, but also got a 10 years contract, more than twice the length of what most get. so it was a give and take.

and we have 23M on the cap this year, so what's jerry's excuse for not signing Henry (didn't he get lucky!?), as he stephen said, we couldn't afford him...how? we are 16th in cash spent, up from 30th, mainly due to Dak and CD contract, but 16th nevertheless..... that's middle of the pack. we are 29th in dead cap money, why? because we hold on to players until their contracts run out despite their performance...why? because jerry doesn't like to pay for a position twice, which is essentially what dead money is....he even does it with the coaches as he has said himself, that there is coaches dead money he has to deal with.

and this was jerry creating a room, painting it, and putting himself in the corner. he went into this offseason with no QB on the roster under contract for 2025!!!! that's bad..... meaning zero options. which would mean either draft, which puts you in a tough situation (depending on who is coming out and how good they are) or garbage in FA...

the contracts are what they are. its going rate for the market. ...why should a 3 bedroom 1200 sqft house in bethesda cost 1.3M, vs. a 5000 sqft house in Iowa? its the market. its always moving up. there are now 9 QBs that make 50M+...and its because they just signed last year.....and there are 16 that make 40M+.....its the QB market.

I am glad that this is blowing up in Jerry‘s face.

He is a football loser and a fraud, and he needs as much embarrassment and condemnation as he can possibly get.

The best thing that he can do from now on is to sell the team.
 
LOL at anyone thinking someone still would have made Dak the highest paid player after this season. Have you been watching the games?? Dak is currently a bottom 10 (probably even bottom 5) QB in the NFL and I'm not sure how you can even debate that.

Now, some team would probably still give him like 40 per season to hope he can return to 2023 form but there's a zero percent chance he would be getting 60.

EXACTLY the reason that I'm no longer watching games or care....extending this joke, sealed the fate of this organization for 6-7 years....minimum. We could hire a new HC, start signing better FA's, and EVEN hire a real GM, but it won't make a damn bit of difference with Dim behind center for the next 4 1/2 years.

I thought since they hadn't sign Dak into August, they would do just that and ride him out and then knowing they were going to sign CeeDee, had they done it earlier in the year when they should have, it would have freed up 10 - 12 million in CAP space. What would that have bought??

It doesn't matter if they signed sooner or later. Dak is washed and the Cowboys are screwed. BTW Dak wasn't going to sign anything less than what he got.
