Twitter: Cowboys sign Marvin Austin after workout (Post #36)..will wear #90

Pick Analysis: Jerry Reese doesn't get enough credit for his willingness to add talent to positions of strength. Austin is a legitimate first-round talent with the potential to be a dominant interior player in their one-gap scheme. His combination of strength, power and athleticism is off the charts, and he should be a terrific contributor as part of a deep defensive line rotation.

Overview

Austin has first round talent, but he did not play football last season and there are concerns about his character and work ethic. He appears to be a prototypical 3-technique defensive tackle, as he is a big boy with outstanding athleticism. He has great feet and the lateral agility to move quickly down the line and make tackles on the edge. He uses his quick heavy hands to shed blocks and has the closing burst to make plays in the backfield. Austin's off the field issues may prevent him from being a first round pick, but he could be a major steal in round two.

I keep hearing that he's unmotivated and is lazy. That may be, but I want to actually see how he makes use of his time here before passing judgment. He basically missed two years of football because of the suspension and injuries. It may be that it's taking him a while to get back into things rather than a motor issue. He's a physical freak and I for one am excited to see what he can do.

Being cut twice in 2 years after all the hype he got might just humble the man and make him see that it all can be taken away before you know it. This is a no risk, high reward signing.

He doesn't sound like "the right kind of guy", but if he's interested in seeking redemption while on a short leash, let's give it a shot.

Another coach on this team who could be a big help to Austin is Leon Lett (Defensive Assistant/Defensive Line)

Woo! Austin is a guy I wanted us to draft and then wanted us to sign right after the Giants cut bait. Hopefully we can get something out of him, loved him coming out of the draft.

90 is definitely not a sacred number around these parts, didn't even need to note that.

Its the last chance saloon for Marvin austin,if Marinelli cant fix him then he wont be playing in the NFL again.

Last Chance Saloon is a heckuva nick name for these no name DL. The Next Men is also a fave. Marvin Austin is low risk, high reward. If anyone can fix him, it is Marinelli.

Agree.

Also, how much did play during those 2 years. One thing for sure he will get playing time with us if he's in shape for it.

Well, we got so many new guys, I thought it might help on game day. Because to be honest, I don't know any of the guys numbers on the DL besides Hatch and Ware.

That said, I felt the same way when Woodson retired and they gave his number away the very next year. When Greg Ellis was cut and they gave his number away. Just a level of familiarity to see someone knew wearing the number.

Watching the DL these days is like watching a preseason game; a ton of numbers that I have NO IDEA who they belong to. Might as well put Pi on the back of one of their jerseys!

Hope he goes right in there with our no name Dline, Nevis was a 3rd rounder, Austin 2nd, now get Montgomery the texans let him go he went in the 2nd round and he projected as a 1st round pick, was let go for violating team rules at hotel and wasn't a fit for the 3-4 outside linebacker.

was a heckuva talent at UNC, great gap penetrator and able to hold his ground in the run game.
If it can work with Nevis, who has bounced around as well, it can work with this kid.
DT -Hatcher-Hayden-Nevis-Austin-Wynn

DE- Ware-Selvie-Wilber-Rayford-Vega

That hopefully gives enough of a rotation to keep guys fresh.
