What are the benefits of this team going to the playoffs?

How in the sam heck is it our fault that this team has sucked for almost 20 years? Put the blame where it belongs.

I think some people think fandom comes with the obligation to give blind support, no matter what.

It's a fallacy that I do not subscribe to.

Well, I would argue that the NFC East isn't even the worst division in football, but the point remains that if Dallas gets in, its because everyone else sucks, not because they are particularly good.

That we can agree on.

By the way, just curious, which division do you feel is worse than this one?

Benefit is we get to watch another game during the season. If we win, we won't hear the 1 playoff win in 17 years line anymore.

Downside of making it, Garrett probably remains as HC.

Exactly right.

Eeking out a playoff appearance due solely to playing in the league's worst division would only give us more of Jerry, Stephen, and this status quo of perpetual mediocrity.

And that's certainly not worth showing up to get thumped by an actually deserving team in the playoffs.

Not by a long shot.

That's really it right there. You have to look at the big picture and I refuse to lower the bar and celebrate some backdoor playoff berth that doesn't mean anything. What I want is a real contender. What I want is a Championship. I want the Dallas Cowboys to be what they once were.

This team is embarrassing to watch. Just so unorganized, disjointed, mismanaged and inept. If anyone thinks I want to see them violated in the playoffs just so I can have an extra week of painting my face, they're crazy.

The only feel good story for me out of a 2013 NFC East Division title would be that the Eagles didn't win it.

But the best case scenario for the long term interest of the Cowboys is for it all to fall apart. We need real change and until we do we're going to keep having these discussions every December.

It would give me another game to watch as a Cowboys fan ... I would say it would be pretty incredible if we somehow make it to the playoffs with this defense. Making the playoffs means we would beat the Eagles and unless we have another performance from our offense like the Denver, that means most likely our defense would have to step up. I mean beating a Packers team with Matt Flynn and a dysfunctional Commanders team isn't anything to brag about, but if we actually manage to beat the Eagles, arguably the hottest team in the NFL, I would say that's impressive and gives me something to look forward to in the playoffs. But I also understand the point of view from mostly every other Cowboys fan in which it would be pointless to make the playoffs because it would mean a lower draft pick and would make Jerry think we're a lot closer than we really are or because we would get blown out in the first round ... but I just don't think like that. I want to see the Dallas Cowboys, my team, make the playoffs and if that makes me less a fan or delusional, then that's alright .. I'll gladly take that title just to enjoy my team win and build some success and playoff experience.

Yeah, what was there to enjoy about it? Us getting our *** kicked?

I can understand some having different opinions about what is wrong with the team or how to go about fixing it, but to act like nothing is wrong I just don't understand.

I don't understand why some people can't enjoy the game. I am thrilled I don't think like many of these guys, and beyond thrilled I would never have to count on some of them in a fight of any kind. Had I ever played with or been coached by someone as spineless as some of our fans come across I might have tried to injure them on purpose. I have no respect for cowardice, and sadly our fans are great at it.

The mentality that the offseason is better than the games is certainly foreign to me. I completely understand the frustration and disappointment--I'm sharing it right now. But there's still a context. If the team loses for a specific reason, let's focus on addressing that specific reason. If we've shown over 14 weeks we can beat bad teams and lose to good ones, there's a good bet we'll continue to do so. It is what it is, and the only question is how to maintain objectivity during the long season and how to cope with the losses none of us ever want to see. Coping with losses by turning on the team and expressing such an abundance of dislike for the coaches and players and management is an alien concept to me. If I ever got to the point where I thought it was futile, I'd gradually just lose interest and I'd follow the team less avidly. I can't imagine getting as upset or disgusted as some fans appear to get and still remaining emotionally involved.
In some ways, I guess, that's a testament to their fanhood. I don't like reading the emotional overreactions, but that's a personal thing for me and not a value judgment on anybody. I do agree, I'd prefer not to be in a foxhole with anybody losing their heads every time the expected happens. At this point, I think we all ought to know what's expected when we're playing pass defense against teams who can throw.

Yep.

Blame the fans.

And never the people who are actually responsible for it.

stash, you're commenting on Hos' post here, and not mine, but for the sake of clarity on my part, the two issues are completely separate in my book. I hold the team responsible for it's shortcomings and the fans responsible for what I think are silly overreactions to those shortcomings. There's no doubt the organization bears responsibility.

By the same token, the year is not over yet, and we do still control our own destiny for the time being. We can save the blaming for whenever they're actually eliminated. I know some people want to get a head start, but you can hardly blame the rest of us for just wanting to watch the division race against a hated rival.

I think the AFC South and East are both worse, and the NFC North is pretty close to as bad.

The benefit is this, if the Cowboys win this division and get a matchup with the Panthers, I think they could possibly win that game. I wouldn't like the chances against SF, but I think the Cowboys would be able to beat the Panthers at home.

I don't know why you think we can beat the Panthers of all teams. They're very similar to the Niners and Hawks.

I want Dallas to play as many games as possible each year because I am a Cowboys fan, want them to win every game, and the off-season is too freaking long...I love seeing Dallas have a shot at making it to the Super Bowl and they have to be in the playoffs to have that chance...I want Dallas to be in the playoffs to force those ESPN talking heads ( and all other Cowboys haters) to have to eat crow and suffer the embarrassment that comes with it...

What's there to enjoy about this team? I have zero respect for people who blindly follow the team like you do and belittle others for not being true "fans." And stop with the "fights" and "injuring people." Please. You aren't fooling anyone with your bravado.

I didn't say anyone wasn't a "true fan." So stuff that accusation where it belongs.

You can't know the benefits until you actually go; ergo, you might as well go.

I'm as frustrated and angry as anyone over the state of the Cowboys but to say what's the benefit of this team going to the playoffs is a ridiculous thing to say. If the Cowboys are going to progress and have a chance to seriously contend for a championship during the Romo era the team needs to start gaining some playoff experience. Anytime you make the playoffs there's a benefit regardless of your chances. Romo as well as every player on the team needs to experience and overcome playoff pressure. Garrett may not be going anywhere anytime soon and he needs playoff experience as a coach. You're certainly not going to benefit by sitting home for the playoffs every year.

So you enjoyed what we saw in Chicago? Sorry, but I enjoy good football, not just any football.
I expect losses in football. Sometimes even blowout ones. That's not the same as enjoying them. I am capable of moving on. Not my problem that as a society we've forgotten how to do that. Oh well, I hope everyone's fantasy teams win this week, and if not that I hope they tear someone up on Madden.

It's the real world. Simple as that.
