Safety is not priority number one in this draft

this is your opinion,who knew Dallas was going to draft a Center last year,the draft will unfold and throw up unexpected results like last year when 2 guards went in the top 10.
 
Lol is totally disregard earl Thomas for Seattle. Has nothing to do with their defense being that great.

What was the consensus of what Dallas needed? Safety. Its clear they wanted Vacarro but he was drafted 3 spots earlier so Dallas traded down. Its clear they werent going to have a chance at the top 2 Gs. This yr they are in prime posistion to have DL of their choosing. Dix and Pryor are not Vacarro, they arent even Reid who got drafted by the niners. Dix is a reaction type FS Manziel ate him up. And Pryor is another version of Wilcox. Same type of player, just from a big name school.

We have been trotting projects and cheap fillers out at safety for YEARS. Every offseason its "so and so will get better with a full season under his belt" and then a year later we are spending another 4th round pick on a guy who runs fast or dominated at Northeastern Iowa Community College.

I have zero confidence in this coaching staff to identify and develop a project project player into an NFL quality safety, much less into the same zip code as Thomas or Chancellor. They have proven repeatedly they can't do it, and nothing I saw in Heath or Wilcox has shown the slightest hint they will break the streak. Whether we address it this year or next, at some point the merry go round has to stop back there and we need to spend resources on an impact safety, especially if we are staying with this defense,

To be clear if an equally rated DT is there at the same pick I'd probably go line. But to simply rule out safety as an option will continue to cripple our pass defense.
 
Now Chancellor is a hard hitting bum? LOL then what on earth do we have roaming our secondary?

You mean like the project Chancellor, Sherman, Browner, Thurmond, Maxwell were 2,3,4 years ago that Cowboy fans are swooning over right now? 2 rookie safeties Dallas had in 2012 struggled so just bench them their 2nd yr. Yup good GM advise for this team from this forum
 
pardon me but i dont trust the opinion of someone who thinks Jeff Heath can play in the NFL and should be relied upon to be a integral part of this team.

Clearly everyone knew that Kam Chancellor would be the 2nd best safety in the NFL back when people on this very forum were saying NO to bringing him over as a free agent a few years back.

The DL can make plays because no one is ever really open.
Windows when they exist are very tight forcing risky throws.

Seattle's 44 sacks were solid but nothing like it's league leading 28 INT.

There is little doubt there is a symbiotic relationship between pressure and coverage but being able to cover is hardly some meaningless skill that anyone can employ with good pressure. Again there is a reason you don't just rush 11. No matter how good the rush or how fast you have to cover. Same as you can't just drop 11. It takes both components to play defense.

I would argue one of the reasons their DB field looks so good is because of their front 7. they would even make us look good. not that their secondary is bad, they are pretty good across the board, but put them in our DB field and I am sure we get better, but not by much.

and if you saw the games seattle played, they don't give opposing QBs much time to throw. they come at you and they come fast and from all angles. you saw what happened to Payton and he likes to get rid of the ball in 2-3 seconds. they may not be the best, but they are deep. they remind me of the cowboys 90's line, which was 8 deep and were relentless and many of their interceptions was the result of pressure, ala what happened to Denver as you saw. so don't be so quick to give credit to the DBs for all the interceptions.

and I agree that there is a symbiotic relationship, but look at the steelers and GB and Giants when they won superbowls with their defenses. steelers front 7 set the tone. yes they had palumalu, but their CBs were average. their front 7 was relentless. same with GB, when they added Raji to the middle, their defense looked different. yes they had woodson, then average CBs. same with giants. their front 4 played out of this world, and helped them to two superbowls. when you don't have to blitz and can attack the QB with your front 5-6, then it helps your DB field not having to come up to help and drop into coverage and passing lanes.
 
To go by just one ranking (PFF's) the Cowboys placed two guys in the bottom 5 of their position in the entire NFL...

Even if you combined the ratings of Wilcox and Heath, you would still not have a safety that was in the bottle 10 of the NFL.

Carter I give a small pass too because of his play in 2012. But Hayden... is what he is. I can't think of a position on the defense where exchanging one player for another could make as much difference. Even an "average" DT would upgrade the overall defensive line by quite a bit.

And here's an ugly thought, this defense is going to have to make up for the loss of Hatcher who was a top-10 DT this season.

Did you miss the part where I said I don't think Jerry and this set of coaches can find and develop a Chancellor, Sherman, etc? How many years are we going to let them continue to sift through the rubbish looking for gold when they have pretty clearly proven they are no good at it?

The 2 rookie safeties in question didn't just struggle, they stunk out loud and were part of a historically bad defense that wasn't all caused by front 7 injuries.Wilcox played 1 whole year of safety at a small school, who the heck knows if he will ever be able to play at this level? He couldn't even beat out the even smaller school UDFA who is the other rookie.

To go into next season depending on Wilcox to be an NFL level player at a position he has been playing for all of two years or Heath to suddenly sprout talent is just the type of thinking that gets us seasons of watching Alan Ball flail around uselessly for 16 games. Heck, maybe Matt Johnson will be healthy too this time, let's go all in on the Hope and Prayer Express back there.

No and lots. Or should I say no because he costs lots.

I think he's a terrific player but the cost is going to be high and I think given the talent-empty defensive line needs all the help it can get.
